Maragadamani is a telugu music director better known as Keeravani in AP. He called himself M.M Kreem for the Hindi version of Criminal. By the Way anyone know who christened him Maragadhamani?

It was this same maragadhamani who scored
music for above mentioned films.
He has also scored good music for the
thamizh film 'Azhagan'

If "Thedinen Vandhadhu's" source music is a Telugu movie MD-ed by Maragathamani, then he certainly deserves much praise for the composition of "Vanna Nilavae Vanna Nilavae". The subtle guitar interludes, the flute, angelic chorus humming, along with solid string and rhythm arrangements prove that this guy has progressed a lot since his "Azhagan", "Vaanamae Ellai" days. I hope he returns to TFM with his new found musical riches.

Pattondru ketten
Nee pathi naan pathi ("Nivedha", "pattu pattu"etc)

His Original Telugu Version of Ninaithan Vandai was very good, I believe Deva scored for N.V in Tamil, eventhough he remixed all the tunes, if he has composed from the original version. It would have been very beautiful. I have the Telugu version of this movie, I feel it is better than NV

Udhaya, It's Ninaithen vandai..not Thedinen Vanthathu..Uyardhinaiyilirunthu Agrinaikku maatri vittergale!(Ah, my kurumbu again...:))
It is indeed sourced from MM's pelli Sandadi. But
"Vanna Nilave" wasn't there in the original. Knowing Deva, it might not be original..but certainly MM is not the source for that song!

Shankar,
The MD for peLLI sandhaDi is Keeravani (aka. Maragadhamani, MM Kreem). Raj, you are absolutely right about vaNNa nilavEy. The telugu movie had 'soundarya lahari' - a song set in chandra khauns and SPB sang the original. I was surprised that Deva did not go for 'eeyadichchaan copy'. Incidentally, Keeravaani is one of the most sought after MD in Telugu FM and supposed to be one of the many favorites of SPB.

rajaG:
Isn't Deva also 'one of the many' favourites of SPB? :)JIJ!
Keervani is on a downswing , BTW. The latest sensation is "Melody Brahma(!!!) Mani Sarma" of "Choodalani undi" fame. Even Raja's Anthappuram wasnt very successful here in AP. I hope Raja comes up with a winner in Geetakrishna's movie. The TeFM scene is disgusting, to say the least. I am an ARR-baiter myself..but compared to these music-mixers in AP, he is GOD-incarnate :). The saving grace is Mahesh(of Nammavar fame). But he doesnt have too many takers.

Interesting news about the goings on in TeFM.
Raj,
If Deva scored "Vanna Nilave" on his own, then that's another song of his that I wholeheartedly appreciate. It's easily in the top ten Thamizh songs of 1998, in my list.

Dear RR and Ravi,
Can you please include the photo of Maragathamani too in the MDs ? His is missing. (I do not know how he looks )

Glad to hear that "VaNNanilave" is an original creation!! A very good tune.
MM is a genuine SPB favourite. The reason could be his ability to create strong melodies. My favourite of his is "Mazhayum Neeye Veyyilum Neeye" in Azhagan. Unfortunately, only the second stanza was played in the movie. The scope for improvisation the tune with its longish notes in the charanam provided, was fully capitalised upon by SPB. I have the original version with both the stanzas and SPB keeps you guessing all the time with his sangathis. "Saathi malli poocharame" was good too. "Kaalam uLLa varai Nee paathi Naan Paathi" was a good melody.

Sriram,
You hit upon the very void that I find in today's TFM: Strong melodies. Though the elite of today (IR, ARR) have provided strong melodies, their fascination seems to be with interludes and orchestral experimentation. I'm not complaining about their efforts, but I miss the simple sandhams of the likes of Vijayabhaskar, V.Kumar, Chandrabose (early stuff), etc. Maragathamani promised to fill just that void in "Vaanamae Ellai" and "Azhagan", but unfortunately he seems done in TFM.

Yes, VB and VK created a great number of melodies , wholesome and fulfilling with tremendous scope for the singers. I have had the good fortune of listening to VB's Kannada numbers ( he was one of the leading MD 's there since 60's) with the melody kings of India, PBS and SPB feasting on these. Who can forget VK's creations.
Please listen to one of MM's creations in Hindi, "Too Mile Dil Khile" from Criminal. It is the best melody I have had the fortune of listening to in 90's , but squandered away by the "nasal king" Kumar Sanu. The telugu version is awesome.
MM, I thought would bring in an era of potent tunes but got swept away by the ARR wave.

Udhaya and SL,
I found some of MM's Telugu compositions tolerably good(Now, dont pounce on me..Everyone knows I have a 'bias' towards u-kno-who...this is as 'objective' as i can get:)).
As for the originality of "Vanna Nilavae", let's not assert in haste and repent in leisure...ALL I said was it wasnt sourced from MM. There is no reason why it shouldnt have been sourced from Phil Collins or Bryan Adams or MJ or some zambian folk sonG:). NOM...though when it comes to Deva, I always feel he deserves all the offence one can mean :)

Though MM has a good creativity (at least , i can compare him with arr), he lifts a lot from WC. I personally haven't listened to much of his numbers but a friend of mine in Hyd who has a good WC knowledge has told me that he lifts from brahms, bach ......
BTW,tumilE is also a copy.(told by the same guy) :-))))

Shankar,
Tu Mile (aka Thelusaa Manasaa in Telugu) is a copy from an album by Enigma. ARR copied the beat pattern for Anbe, ennaik kaaNa villaiyE..from the same album (not the same song). Regarding Tu milE there is a very interesting story. One will notice a subtle difference in the tune for the third line of the song which goes, na tu paas paas..(H) and tharimina aaru kaalaalu (T). I believe MMK played the Telugu original to Sani, oops I mean Sanu, who somehow could not master the subtlety. After couple of futile attempts, KS bulldozed his way of singing into the song saying the original version is not "bombay" enough (whatever that means, mediocre I guess). Since the director and other people were not willing to interfere, MMK had to politely accept KS's version (and later lamented about it).

A similar observation can be made about "Jaaneman Aaja" and "Rakkamma kaiyai thattu". SPB goes to touch the highest note with ease and melody ("Ettu ooruthaan"). The hindi singer , is probably no match to the genius. The notes are flatter and lower.

While the interludes of Tum Mile are decidedly "sourced" from Enigma, the tune is quite original and MM has really given subtle chord progressions in the charanam portions. But yes, Kumar Sanu did a very poor job of singing in Hindi.
As for MM's copies, he quotes some POP/ROCk pieces, but I have not heard any W.Classical pieces ( he has actually given a few) being copied.

Regarding WC peices of MM:
A good eg is "Nivetha". A personal favorite, its interlude is partially WC. I was compelled to believe for the first time that it was IR's.
But I feel his best composition is "Jaamu rathiri". An innovative song with many "natural" sounds and SPB at his best.

Raj & other TeFM fans,
What do you guys think of Ramana Gokula, the software CEO-turned MD? I think he did music for a Jagapathi Babu movie, and I happened to hear snatches of one song from the net. SOunded different!
I just read y'day that the guy who we've (atleast I) been talking about as a new MD - "Karan" of RVU's "Velli Nilave" that had some good SPB nos. - is none other than Raj-Koti. It seems he's been rechristened again as "Geethapriyan" for "Mannavaru Chinnavaru"!

Sriram: Thumile Dilkile also came out as Uyire Uyire from the film Criminal, in Tamil. SN Surendar has sung it(solo) and Mano has sung in the duet....I can guarantee it's better than Kumar S's version. Who sang it in Telugu? By the way, I had the mis-fortune of seeing Kumar S live, when I went for a program to see Hariharan perform(the man has total command over gamakam/brika and has flawless shruthi control - all this I got in 30 minutes of watching HH). Kumar, on the other hand, was really awful, Dear Oh Dear, he not only had the worst taste in clothes, but his singing was terrible....
