I am not sure if this thread has been attempted
before: If so , Ravi..Knock this off!
Many pioneers in TFM have innovated in a variety
of ways to make TFM absolutely Great.
The Keyword here is UNIQUENESS!
I would love to identify songs that are truly unique.
Uniqueness could be in
--Construct of Music (Style,Instruments etc)
--Singing
--Lyrics
As my knowledge of MDs other than IR is very limited , I request Kanchana,SK,Gopal,RajaRam,
Ramki & others to pitch in for TFM prior to IR.
My Examples for Unique Songs:
1. maNNil Indha Kaadhal - Keladi kaNmanNi
-- For SPB's Singing
2. KalaivaaNiye - Sindhu Bhairavi
-- For the musical construct
Now.. Over to you folks..

Two songs that come to my mind immly:
adhisaya raagam - apoorva raagangal (rare of usage of 4 note scale for a film song)
sangeethame - koyil puraa (probably the only film song in the rare rasikapriya ragam)

Gokul,
I think you can add "mahaganapathim" from SB too. No percussion used for a pure carnatic song.

"Kanmani anbodu kaadhalan" - GUNA - I cannot think of any other song with such "Urainadai" style composition - perhaps " Sippiyirukkudhu " from VARUMAIYIN NIRAM SIVAPPU comes under the same category.

gOpAl: En neenga aahaaya vennilAvEya intha listla sErthu irukkeenga?
Madhan: 'thenRalOdu udan piranthaaL' from R. R. chOzhan has a "urainadai' construct if by that you mean some one speaks the lines first and then some one sings it to a tune. I would have thought urainadai would be something like 'antha naaL ngyabagam' from uyarntha manidhan.

'dhom dhom dhomda' from sindu bhairavi being the only song in kanakaangi.
'enna paatu paadi' from sakalathi, the controversial song which is the first of its kind
in terms of folk type dappanguthu songs based on a raga mayamalava gowlai.

Vijay
I heard (from soc.culture.tamil) that MSV also has a kanakaangi to his credit. This needs to be verified. But there is one kanakaangi in Malayalam. (Bharat, help me with the film name. )
So it's definitely not unique for indian film scene.
BTW, how is 'enna paattu paada' unique? (We are not discussing about firsts, for your info.)

GRamanathan's use of "muhAri" (sOga) rAgam for one charaNam in mAsilA nilavE romantic duet in ambikApathy.
MSV-TKR's use of yAzh in karNan (could someone please verify?).
MSV-TKR's use of the vedic chants tune for a section of taittarIya upanishad (yajur vEdA) for Ayiram karangaL nItti in karNan.
MSV's use of pure karaharapriyA in mAdhavip ponmayilAL and pure sudhdhadhanyAsi in nIyE enakku endRum nigarAnavan.
MSV's true-to-original adaptation of the "cha-cha" dance tune in LRE's paLinginAl oru mALigai.
IR in Sindhu Bhairavi's kalaivANiyE "ArOhaNam" only approach.
IR (& VM) in Moondram Pirai's vAn engum thanga viNmeengaL vizhiyimai mooda sooriyan vandhu kadal kuLiththERum nEram as one of the longest pallavis in TFM.
ARR's no-instrument music in rAsAththi from Thiruda Thiruda.
There is a song from "Nammavar" where no real instruments were used but were simulated by human voices. Song? MD?

It was Mahesh - MD.
I think senthamizh thEn mozhiyAL too was based on the sOga rAgam - muHari
Raaja has given many such songs. 'rAgA guys' to come out with those songs.

Someone wrote that ARR was the first to use no-instrument music in Thiruda Thiruda. That is absolutely not true. Ilayaraaja used it in Pagalil oru Iravu, an IV Sasi movie for a S Janaki song. It was very popular in the late 70s or early 80s. I forget the name of the song. But it was done first by Ilayaraaja. The other popular song in this movie is "Ilamai enum Poongatru" by SPB.

Krish:
I think the comment was ARR's no-instrument music in rAsAththi from Thiruda Thiruda. It was not said as ARR's first. Infact there is a little bit of percussion music in that song merged cleverly along with the humming voices.
I am still curious as to whether there is any TFM song with absolutely no-instrument music ?
There is one in Kannada Song very recently by IR which has absolutely no-instrument song, and a great melody in Prema Raaga Haadu Gaelathi.

Krish:
I just remembered a song with absolutely no-instruments song in Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu by MSV. The song is a Bharathiyar song starts something like :
Theertha karaiyinilae,
Therkku moolayil, shenbagathottathilaee
Paarthirundhaal varuvaen vennilaavinil
PaangiyOdendru sonnaan . . .
Vaarthai thavari vittal
Adi kannamma maarbu thudikkudhadi
Paartha idathil ellam unnai pOlavae paavai theriyudhadi aaahhhhhhhhh paavai thriyudhadi...
I don't have this song in the cassette I have, but this song is there in the movie and I remember that this song absolutely did not have any music but the tune and meaning was so lilting.

Sorry for not being specific before. an acapella is basically the type of song that is being discussed: unaccompanied singing, usually involving vocal harmonies. The thiruda thiruda song is not quite in this category, some instruments do figure, if I am not mistaken. THe song from Maya Bazaar '95 I quoted before uses no instruments, just human voices...

En Kanmani Un Kadali - Chittukkuruvi - The first use of counterpoint in TFM.
Yaradi Nee Mohini - Utthama Putthiran - Probably the first "rock"-ish tune in TFM.
Kaise Kahoon Kuch Keh Na Sakoon - Nandu - The only Hindi song in TFM.
