I want this thread to be a decent IR Vs ARR debate. I want to make a list of songs that leave a very powerful emotional impact and compare the creations of IR and ARR. To begin with we can start with the emotion of sorrow / sadness. IR has a few really strong candidates starting from his very first movie. ARR has his powerful chakravaaham from Muthu.
Sondhamillai bandhamillai - Annakkili
Amma nee sumandha pillai - Annai oar aalayam
Thaayundu thandhai undu - Koyil Kaali
Vidukadhaiyaa - Muthu
One to be in one of their better frames of mind to be able to withstand the onslaught of these songs.
Let the healthy IR Vs ARR debate begin

Make that penultimate line
"One has to be in one of their better frames of mind to be able to withstand the onslaught of these songs".

Poraaley ponnuthaayi certainly is a powerful one. How did I forget that.
While listing the songs, please remember that the movie story might use the song in a different situation (than say sorrow), even then if the song leaves a taste of sorrow then it needs to be mentioned here.
Hai raama, from rangeela, for example might be considered a sorrow-filled song.
Happy listing

Poongaatre from Friends is a good 'sad' song.
This song is heavily inspired by MSV's 'ullathil nalla ullam' song from movie Karnan. Some may argue that is copied.
Ullathil naala ullam - is my all time favourite sad song. Seerkazhi's great voice with MSV's perfect tune and kannadhasan's lyrics.. when it comes to sad songs, MSV surely beats everybody else.
From IR, kanne kalaimaane from moondram pirai, kanavugale kanavugale from Aanandha Raagam and SPB's the great sangeetha jadhi mullai are my favourites.
From ARR, I liked 'kaadu potta kaadu' from karuthamma.

hey, 'then pandi cheemayile' from nayagan is one of the most haunting and sad songs i've ever heard. and i have this opinion since i heard it first back in the 80s.
i've always imagined composing a charanam to this song as it was unfortunately only a 'bit'-song.

I would rate IRs 'Poongatru' from mudhal mariyadhai as one of te best sad songs. its not exactly a sad song but has so much pain in it. classic number.
as far as ARR is cncerned it would be either 'uyire' from bombay or 'porale' from karuthamma. tough decision.

From the list of postings, my consolidated list
I'd like to further qualify the sad / sorrowful situations as the ones created by separation (temporary or permananent). I'd classify Poongaatru from mudhal mariyaadhai as more of a Nondhufying type than a sad /sorrow one. I have not listened to some of IR latest numbers and am not familiar with ARR's lesser popular ones either.
IR
En thaayaenum koyilai...(aranmanai kili)
Karpoora bommai ondru...(Keladi kanmani)
chinna pura ondru...(anbey sangeetha)
unnai nenachaen...(apoorva sagodharargal)
uyirae uyirin...(en bommukkutty ammavukku)
kanavugalae...(anandha raagam)
kaathirunthu...(vaidhehi kaathirundhaal)
thaayundu thanthaiyundu...(koyil kaalai)
sangeetha jaadhi mullai...(kaadhal oviyam)
Azhagiya kanney...(udhiri pookkal)
ARR
Kannalanae...(bombay)
Kaadhal rojavae...(roja)
Uyirey uyirey...(bombay)
Vidukathaiyaa...(Muthu)
Going ahead with the next mood. I'd like to propose "one with nature". The songs should be mainly emphasising a theme where a character is enjoying the sensation of nature in solitude. I'd Panneeril nanaindha pookkal a decent song, malaiyaala karaiyoram as average and putham pudhu kaalai as very good. Once again the movie scene need to reinforce the sensation one experiences while listening to a song.
IR
Putham pudhu kaalai
Kaalai paniyil ...(Gayathri)
Happy listing.
