Saravanan:
This is the first time I am listening to kaNNOdu kaNNaai. I saw the movie in Raj TV recently. (Somehow I managed to watch the whole movie!) But this song was cut off by the Raj TV guys! The song vaazhiya senthamizh thaayE was there. KVM sings that song with majesty. It is an impressive song with horse gallops providing a nice pace.
I look forward to GR's voice coming in SOTD soon.. perhaps a song from ponmudi?

>>That reminds...... has SVV tried singing? <<
OISG, strange you should ask that, for only late last night I was listing songs sung by K.Rani for a journalist friend, and included a duet by S.V.Venkataraman & Rani- ''vaaraamale irundhiduvaano, allaal varuvaano, anbu tharuvaano' from Nannambikkai (1956/ Film Centre). Music by SVV himself.
Da Vinci, those songs are very musical too, KVM must have sung for a comedy actor, I guess. 'lovekku lovekku love' is a real jaunty duet!
Sure, sk! The Ponmudi GR-TV Rathinam duets are classics.

Saravanan, late thanks for this song. Have always wondered about KVM's abilities as a singer as I hadnt read or heard anything on that so far. We have heard so much about MSV being a good singer and all that but nothing on KVM. If you have any more songs or info on KVM as a singer, pl. bring it out. To compose and communicate something like Oru NaaL podhuma, Mannavan vandhaanadi etc. the man had to be atleast a decent singer. The SOTD seems to be a testimony to that fact.

vijay, I know only a few songs that KVM sang-those I have mentioned. There may be some more too. Sure, we can have them as SOTD sometime, they are worth cherishing. According to P.Leela, KVM wasn't too keen on singing.
And from whatever I have read, the responsiblity of teaching the singers and supervising their rehersals was TKP's. SPB has mentioned many times how TKP sat with him for the Shankarabharanam songs. Jayalalitha too has spoken about TKP coaching her to sing 'Amma endraal anbu'.

KVM's brighas/nuances are awesome and clear. No wonder his songs were so rich sounding. This kind of voice is simply what a composer would need to convey the singer. And singers like PS,TMS, SPB were anyway awesome in picking up these very well. I can easily imagine how KVM would have taught "aayiram nilave vaa" to SPB. But I cannot help thinking that when KVM sings it sounds perfectly like a mylapore mama :-) (kaNNodu kaNNaai ragasiyam pEsi nu paadaraar..aana nalla karnaatakama irukku)
Also somehow this song reminds me of nenjil kudi irukkum anbarukku naan irukkum "en....karuththai purindhukoLLA mudiyuma ?" That "en" portion is very similar to "pEsi....".
BTW, there seems to be a spate of replies for my comments. All I was requesting was to keep any references to religion away from a place for music in order to avoid any tiffs.

Saravanan, IR has an assistant too named Sunderrarajan who teaches singers I believe. Any info/background on him? Is he the guy who sang "Potri paadadi penne"? I heard Srilekha Parthasarathy mention recently that Sunderrajan taught her one of YSR's songs as well. Some of these unsung behind-the-scenes artistes go a long way in ensuring the success of the rendition. MSV had a couple of them as well.

What a simple and superb song.
Indeed TFM missed a good singer.
MS,
You are not alone about "nenjil kudi irukkum". OISG munnamae indha irumbu thirai-ya vilakkittaaru.
"The tune is a lingering one and certainly must have lingered more for SVV- "Nenjil kudiyirukkum" a clear 6 years later!"

vijay, I too have heard of this person T. Sundararajan, who was/is an integral part of IR's troupe. Another song he sang was 'Thannikkulle thannikkule enna irukku' in the unreleased Uyire Unakkaga. I believe he was also among the singers of 'Anne anne' (Kozhi Koovuthu). You're so right about these behind-the-scene artistes, they often go unrecognized.

MS - My humble comment on your comment. I am sure Naaz did not mean to hurt anybody's feeling. His statement did not sound having an agenda. And as long as it doesnt hurt anyone, i think reference to religion is ok.
Naaz- me too not a big fan of florescent OMs.

Song of the Day: anbuLLa maan vizhiyE from kuzhandhaiyum dheivamum.

- A stylish TMS, P.Suseela duet for the weekend. Music by MSV in this remake of the Parent Trap. Lyrics by Vaali.
- I like the way TMS sings the pallavi the first time, with a highly stylized "ezhudhuva thennavendraal uyirk kaadhalil Or kavidhai". Not sure if it was to suit the James Bond of that era, Jaishankar.

Aaha, great choice, bb! Among my favorite TMS-PS duets.
Yes, Kuzhandhaiyum Deivamum (1965/ AVM) was an excellent adaptation of Parent Trap. It starred Jaishankar, Jamuna, Kutti Padmini, G.Varalakshmi, Major Sundararajan, Nagesh, Shantha, MSS Bagiyam, VR Thilagam & others.
Kutti Padmini stole the show- she played the twins (named Lalli & Pappi!!) and her heartwarming performance(s) rekindled memories of Baby Saroja of the 40s and Daisy Irani of the 50s.
The story is of a husband, Sekar (Jai) and wife, Bama (Jamuna) who are separated due to ego problems fuelled further by the arrogance of Bama's rich mother G.Varalakshmi. Sekar takes one of the daughters and goes to Singapore, and after a few years returns to India, a rich man now. Now 7 year old, Lalli and Pappi find themselves as classmates in the same school. And at last they bring about a rapprochement between their estranged parents. Jaavar Seetharaman's screenplay and dialogues added sheen to the proceedings.
The music was among the highlights of the film. It was among the earliest films that MSV undertook after breaking away from TKR, and was a significant success for him. 'enna vEgam nillu baama' (TMS/ALR, Vaali), 'anbuLLa maanvizhiyE' (TMS/PS, Vaali), 'naan nanRi solvEn'(PS/MSV, Vaali), 'kuzhandhaiyum deivamum guNathaal ondRu'(PS, Kannadasan), 'kOzhi oru kootilE'(MSR, Kannadasan), 'pazhamuthirchOlaiyilE'(PS, Kannadasan), and 'aahaaithu naLLiravu'(LRE, Vaali)were all songs that became immensely popular.
'anbuLLa maanvizhiyE' is a captivating duet--the opening guitar notes, and the viloin-filled interludes are unforgettable. PS's intoxicating slur in ending syllables of the pallavi, and Jamnu fluttering her beautiful eyes while singing 'iru kaNNgaLil ezhuthi vandhEn' are audio-visual treats.
Also, there is great beauty in the lyrical arrangement, where to each of TMS's queries in the first charanam, PS gives apt replies
in the second:
TMS: nalam nalam thaana mullai malarE?
PS: nalam nalam thaanE nee irundhaal!
TMS: sugam sugam thaana muthu chudarE?
PS: sugam sugam thaanE ninaivirundhaal!
TMS: iLaya kanniyin idai melindhadhO?
PS: idai melindhadhu iyaRkai allava!
TMS: edutha eduppilE nadai thaLarndhadhO?
PS: nadai thaLarndhadhu naaNam allava!
TMS: vaNNa poonkodi vadivam kondathO?
PS: VaNNa poonkodi peNNmai allava!
TMS: vaadai kaatRilE vaadi nindRathO?
PS: vaada vaithathum uNNmai allava!
The film version has one more charanam that goes 'unakkoru paadam solla vandhEn, enakkoru paadam kEttukkoNdEn'. sk had posted the complete song sometime back in the PS group.
The song has a sad version too, also by TMS & PS 'anbuLLa mannavanE, aasaiyil Or kaditham, naan kaigaLil ezhuthavillai, adhai kaNNeril ezhuthi vandhEn'.
The film's stupendous success prompted AVM to remake it in Hindi after 2 years. Krishnan-Panju directed the Hindi remake as well- Do Kaliyaan starred Biswajeet and Mala Sinha. And Neetu Singh (called Baby Sonia then) played the twins--the same Neet Singh who emerged as one of the top heroines of Bollywood in the 70s.

Dew eyed Jamuna is definitely not my cup of kaapi saravanan! she was ill paired opposite Jai - iduppil thukki vaikavendiya thambiyudan enna oodal! but of course the song is lovely only to be surpassed by MSV's stylish humming in naan nanri solven. it is also vintage PS stuff smooth as Thai ;-)
i could only see your briefcase but unable to proceed further;-( mama has to wait a little longer to be heard. MS's comments only make me more anxious
