I have a special liking to songs sung by Raja.
One of the best i have heard is from "Poomani".
"En Paattu , En Paattu". Melody defined.
The list of solo and duet songs by Raja is endless. Off the duets, "Saamak kozhi Koovudhamma " is a wonderful song. Raja excels in this song.
How is He rated as a singer!

Raja is a singer with a peculiar tone and my most
favourite song of his is Janani janani from
thai mugambigai.Songs rendered for Murali by
Raja are particularly impressive.

Hi all,
I think Raaja has the best voice which suits folk and pathos...especially the songs which comes at the backdrop of a sequence in the films......mmm Classical.....I dont think his voice suits anybody in Films.....But if its used separately he can classified on par with leading singers......I would personally opt for his folk songs which he has sung....during the early days of his career...and the best recent pathos to me is "Varthai thavari vittai" from 'BHARATHI'.....

i love "metti oli kaatrodu en nenjai " from metti more than any other IR songs...IMHO his voice has become rusty nowadays...His early day songs like "naan thedum sevanthi","adi aathadi","santhathil paadatha kavithai" was really great..his voice obeyed him i think at that time..
now,may be because he is not singing much, his voice has gone a little odd..still he did a great job in "janani janani"..
All other recent songs are mainly pathos.."chandirarum sooriyarum" is an exception..but surely he has a very different voice from other proff singers...it gives u a feeling that he is singing from his heart...whole heartedly..
IMO i love to listen nice duets from him than pathos..i am fed up with his tons of pathos..

I think IR is underrated - I like several of his songs for different reasons (I do hate some of his songs because sometimes he tries songs that don't suit him)- when he is good, he's really good - brings out the complete "Bhavam"
1. Poomalaiye (Geethanjali)
2. Aathadi paavada (poo vilangu)
3. Eduthu Naan vidava (pudhu Pudhu Arthangal)
4. Nalladhor & ninnai charan (Bharathi)
5. Metti Oli & sandhathil (Mettil)
6. Janani Janani (Thai Mookambikai)
7. Enna Paatu paada
8. Adi aathadi
9. a song in Devadai (dont remember the first line)
10. Thulli Ezhundhadhu Paatu (Geethanjali? - this is an exceptional song)
I'm sure there are many others...

Guys you forgot Kaadal Oviyam ( Alaigal Oivathillai ). But my favorite is Janani Janani. And then songs from avatharam. He is terrific in that movie. just fits nazer. there is some magic in his voice that too he selects the songs just fits for him to sing.

I rate him very highly as a singer.
"a feeling that he is singing from his heart...whole heartedly.. "
Peeps, neenga sonnadhu romba correct!! The other day I was listening to "Ulukulla Chakaravarthi" from panakkaran... In the second charanam, I have a feeling that he was crying!!
There was one more song "Enna jenmam" from Kumbakonam gopalu... You can see that get really gets emotional and upset even as he was singing...

Barath,
Nila athu vaanathu mele was by IR. In fact he wrote the lyrics too. (Even in this kind of a song, he writes profound thought-provoking lines like "poNNukkum ponnukkum adi thadi thaan maNNukkup pOgira ulagaththilE. pasikkudhu pasikkudhu thinam thinam thaan, thinnaa pasi athu theerndhuduthaa ?" !!! IR is not only an under-rated singer, he is an under-rated lyricist too)

well! I always debated whether I liked the song, which IR sung, bcoz the tune was nice or bcoz his was voice was also nice.
I think IR initially played it safe by singing songs which he felt had a really good tune and then started experimenting..
for example I think Jesudas wud have been wonderful in "kuyil pattu"
and the song "nil nil nil" wud have been better with spb in it... I wud say "nil nil nil" was one song IR experimented too much by singing in it...
EVen ARR tries out singing some songs himself but its clearly obvious that ARR is streched when it comes to melody but he is alright with rhythm oriented songs... He did a concert recently and I cud see he could not sing "dilse " continuously.. I was told he did lip-sync in the other concerts... although I feel ARR really imitates sting/george michael when he sings...
I think it wud be unsuitable for IR or ARR to sings songs like " en Kadhale " in DUet or "yen Iniya ponn Nilave" in moodupani.
As to what judgement goes into them singing a song I dunno. I think IR tradinally sings for Karthik, Murali... ( "valli valli ena vandhan" is an excellent song that comes to my mnd)

Darul,
You are absolutely right. Especially when I listen to the line "Bhoomi endra Thayum Undu... Vannam Enra Thanthai Unidi..." it is just brilliant stuff. He sings from his heart for most of the devotional songs. Here are some of my favourite songs.
1. Jannani Jannani (One needs the devotion to match IR's involved singing in this song. This song could have been better sung by KJY or SPB, but no one could have matched the devotional touch that comes from his heart as he himself has rightly said in his devotional album 'Geethanjali' (Intha padalkallil en Aathamavai karaya vetten endru yaravathu Yennivittal, Inthi Piravi edhutha Payanai naan addaiven)
2. Naan Thedum Sevanthi Poovidhu (Esp. The Starting Allabanai)
3. Naannaga Naan Ellai Thaye (I like his version much much better than SPB's because he sings it the right way esp. "Nal Vazhvuthanthaye Neeya..." SPB kinda goes smooth here which does not give the same effect as our genius Isaignanni)

I totally agree with

no way I know exactly what u r talking abt.. and that was precisely the reason why I liked spb's version better.
I guess this is where... IR's popularity as MD clouds the opinion...

Also I have observed that the songs sung by IR will have something very special in them always
musically. For eg, Oru Alaam Poovu from
Punniyavathi. What a music that song has.
As already mentioned, Naan thedum Sevanthi Poo
from Dharmapathini is another great song.

What about "Sangathil Kaanatha Kavithai " in AUTO RAJA?(Did I get the words correctly!!). It's great because of the way IR has rendered this song. This is one song where the singer IR has excelled the composer IR.
