Does anyone remeber the lyrics for this piece from the movie KARNAN ? It goes something like "Ayiramkarangal neeti azhaikinra thaye potri", it is a verse thats sung in the background while Sivaji is praying to Surya, and at the end of the verse, while he is leaving, Surya warns him about Indra waiting in the diguise of an old brahmin ?
Also i cant seem to find any audio of this very beautiful verse either ? Does any one have it ?
Thanx

One song in Karnan by TMS, PBS, SG, TL and others. Do you know what song it is and is it available in any website to listen? - a wonderful song.

On reading the intro to this thread, I got the feeling of déja vu because I had read about this song in the archives. I tracked it down to the "Bringing ilakkiyam to the Paamaran" thread. ( http://newtfmpage.com/forum/8955.137.19:53:29.html ).I am posting the portion relevant to this thread.

Kanchana,
Thank you really for touching on Gita.Taking the lead from that let me touch on "Aayiram Karangal Neetti" in Karnan. It used to be thought that Veiyitketra Nizhalundu Veesum Thendral Kaatrundu from Kalvanin Kathali laid the yardstick for translation into Tamil of foreign songs. That was a song of Umar Khayam translated by Desiga Vinayagam Pillai. Likewise in Karnan, Kannadasan has created great impression on the hearts and minds of the Veda chanters. Kannadasan amd MSV/TKR spent 15 days in Bangalore to compose the songs for Karnan. They brought the veda chanters to their hotel room and requested them to chant the vedas. After listening to the chanting, Kannadasan was highly inspired and he composed the following lines:-
"Aayiram Karangal Neeti
Anaikkindra Thaye Potri
Arul Pongum Mugathai Kaati
Irul Neekam Thanthai Potri
Thayinum parinthu Sala Sagalarai Anaippai Potri
Thazhaikkum Or Uyirkatkellam Thunakkaram Koduppai Potri
Thoorathey Neruppai Vaithu Saarathai Tharuvai Potri
Gnayire Nalamey Vazhga Nayagan Vadivey Potri
Naanilam Ulla Naal Mattum Potruvom Potri Potri"
In any translation, you may only get the form(Vadivam)but seldom the spirit(unarchi). When this song was relesed, remarks were made that Kannadasan was able to retain the original form and spirit of the Sanskrit Vedas in the Tamil translation. This piece remains one of the masterpieces of Kavgnar.

Not the Vedas, but adithya hridayam (from valmiki ramayanam; recited by agastyar to raman when he wonders how to kill ravanan) - the lines scan beautifully with the sanskrit recitation (e.g. sengalipuram anatharama dikshithar's recital available on HMV).

Vj, the MDs are MSV-TKR indeed. The song(s) sung by four singers
mazhai kodukkum - Seergazhi
nANi chivanthathu - Tiruchy Loganathan
mannavar porutkaLai - TMS
enna koduppAn - PBS
and then the 'Ayiram karangaL neetti' chant. Great team work by MSV-TKR, Kannadasan and all the singers. Hats Off !!!

It was rumoured that Karnan really shook GR because BR Panthulu shifted from GR to MSV-TKR in this movie .(Aayirathil oruvan followed)
GR -Pantulu combo gave the ultimate one with "Kappalotiya Thamizhan"

Kattabomman songs are just no match for KOT.It is one of the greatest single movie album of Tamil Cinema.
Save for Inbam pongum and Singara Kanne other songs were just ordinary. (maatu Vandi,Jakkamma,Vetri vadi velan etc)
But KOT like Karnan all the songs were great.
Nejil uramum indri
Oodi vilayadu pappa
Katru veliyidai kannamma
Velli pani malayil
Endru thaniyum indha
Vandhe mathram enbom

OISG, even I am not a great fan of VPK songs. And there is this song on Muruga resembling GR's own 'sundari soundari niranthariyE'. Both are prayer songs and both are in Kurunji ragam.
There is this PBS version of 'manjaL mugam niram mAra' that was absent in the edited version of the movie. Interestingly, Hindustani classical artistes were brought down from Bombay like say, Bismillah Khan. They were all generously used in the BGM scores and songs. The 'iravum nilavum' song has MSV's pet performer Sathyam and Bismillah Khan playing Shehnai together. My favourite interlude piece is the sarangi piece in Hamsanandi with xylophone before PBS's 'enna koduppAn'.

'Manjal Mugam Niram Maari' song is there in the movie and in the latest audio released on Karnan' (audio released in 1983).
But, the concluding part, by PBS, is missing both in the movie and in the audio casettee.
It goes like that : 'Sanginaal Paal Koduththaal sandhana vaai noghumendru, thangaththall sanghu............ '
From the lyric, you will notice that in the film it is by Dhuriyodhanan, to Karnan's son.
The song having this portion was rarely broadcasted in Radio Ceylon and in AIR
The old 78 rpm record should be available in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Iravum nilavum has the simple and best interlude.
SL , could you list out any Hindi movie where in so much of NI traditional instruments being played extensively ( Sitar,Sarangi,Dilrupa,Santoor)
Prob you will have a Naushad Score ...
Can you list out the ragas of all the songs?

OSIG, took a quick trip down my HFM repository lane casting a cursory glance at everything my memory pointed me to, but none could measure up to the criteria. Ofcourse, I am bearing in mind, the BGM scores too. The movies that had sprung to mind are Mughal-E-Azam (Naushad), Baiju Bawra (Naushad), Basant Bahar (SJ), Shabab (Naushad), Anarkali (C Ramachandra), Taj Mahal (Roshan). Lots of Muslim socials like chaudvin kA chAnd, mErE mehboob, bahu bEgum did not have music as the basis of the theme and therefore had their musical scopes reduced.
The rAgAs to the best of knowledge
mazhai kodukkum - Hindolam
nANi chivanthana - Darbari Kanada
mannavar porutkaLai- Mohanam
enna koduppAn - Hamsanandi

kaNgaL engE - Most of it is in Sudha danyasi, but D2 and R2 are introduced in the charanam
kaNNukku kulamEthu - Pahadi
pOi vA magaLE - Ananda Bhairavi
iravum nilavum - Hamir Kalyani (but have heard people say that it is saranga tarangini). Need to verify that.
uLLaththil nalla uLLam - Chakravaham
maraNaththai eNNi - lots of Sahana, Thilang
manjaL mugam - Need to recollect the tune for charanam first :). Could u give me any links to the song.

There is another song 'Mahaaraajan Ulagai Aazhalaam' TMS + PS. The song is not there in the film. Beautiful song. Once Ilayaraajaa told that it would be difficult for him to compose a song like 'Mahaaraajan Ulagai Aazhalaam'

Thanks for the listing.
Apart from the "Ennai Arinthai" has ever MSV used Sahana?
This Saranga Tharangini - Hamir Kalyani confusion will last forever.Even well trained Classical musicians had fought over this, i heard.

SK, thanks for the link.
OISG, he has used Sahana in 'Adi nAthan kEtkindrAn' by TMS, SJ in 'gangA gowri'.
Another song on the same lines as 'iravum nilavum', though with a superior melody content is 'konja nEram nammai' (TMS/SJ) in 'siriththu vAzha vENdum'. Great composition with a more or less similar confusion.
