This topic is an off-shoot of a discussion I had with PG in another thread. While this page has its share of TKR/MSV/IR/ARR/Deva, we have not talked much about our grandparents/parents generation's music. I vaguely recall carrying heavy graphite records with bright labels and playing them on an HMV gramaphone which needed to be cranked up in my grandfather's home. I know and can appreciate M.K. Thiyagaraja Bhagavadhar, P.U. Chinnappa, D.K.Pattammal,Dandapani Desikar, M.S.Subbulaksmi singing movie songs (now, not as a kid or a teenager). I also recall some songs by K.R.Ramasamy and some others. The chronology of who came after who, who the M.D.'s were then, who the lyricists were etc. and how the industry transitioned to TKR-MSV all seems very murky to me. Are you all in the same boat of ignorance as me? Is any one even partially knowledgeable re these early TFM era?

Regarding that "history" article, it was fully
done by my sister, Sathya Kabali, using material
from various resources. As you've said she has
done an excellent job.
BTW, have you seen PPP? Any suggestions? If there
is any contribution you want to add to PPP please
pass it on to us.

of text on pre-MSV era. I am hard pressed for
time now. Will type it in early next month. (hopefully)

Sathyakeerthi:
Please congratulate your sister on my behalf for a job so very well done. It must have taken days of research, and a lot of patience to compile that material!!
Sathya:
I belong to the MSV--IR generation, and am a fan of TKR-MSV/MSV. I remember these songs very vaguely since we listened to them in my grandparents' house during summer vacations (more for the fun of cranking up the HMV gramaphone that time), but now I appreciate the swara layam a lot.
My MKT favorites are:
1. Krishna Mugundha Muraarae
2. Rajan Maharajan
Enakku avalavu vaarthaigaludaiya arthamum puriyaadhu. For example, MKT's Krishna song has the following line"Kudila kundhalam kuvalaya dhana neelam". Vaarthaigal azhagaaga olikkinrana; aanaal aartham?
Ungalai patri konjam sollunga--eppadi andha kaalathu paattilae ungalukku interest vandhadhu? Appuram list'ai thodarungal.

Many of MKT's songs were heavily Sanskritised. That is probably why it is difficult to understand his songs. But there are also many of his songs which are pure Thamizh. Of these I think Paapanasam Sivan has written and composed music for quite a few. (Paapanasam Sivan, a gifted lyricist and composer seems to have been forgotten in TFM but gaining increasing acceptance in carnatic music circles).
Some of MKT's 'Tamil' songs :
vaLLalai paadum vaayal - Sivakavi
boomiyil maanida janman adaindhumor
annaiyum thandhaiyumdhane vaazhvil
vadhaname chandra bimbamo
vasantha rudhu mana mohaname
At home, only my father used to listen to MKT/PUC and MMDD. I learnt to listen to MKT / PUC and I like their music to a great extent. I trying to get hold of MMDD recordings but I can't find them as easily as MKT/PUC recordings.

I was watching MRRadha's Rathak Kanneer a couple of days ago and guess what :
Music for songs scored by R.Sudharsanam and BGM scored by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and party. I did not know that MSV-TKR has scored only BGM for some movies.
Has MSV-TKR scored only BGM only for some movies before they ushered in the MSV-TKR era ?

Hold! Are we talking about MDs or singers here. The thread topic says it is pre MSV/TKR era. That means it is about the MDs. Let's talk about Chalapathi Rao, S.venkatraman(Sv.sekar's dad), sudarsanam etc.
Does anyone know who is the MD for this song 'thesulavudhe thaen malaramae' . Incidentally this is Kamal's favorite song.
PS: Don't jump into quick conclusion about my age.

Ravy---Smile!!:
Don't be sensitive about the age issue--all of us are actually too young to know anything about this era. We were not born yet, in fact! In fact some of us were born in the TKR-MSV era, and some were born in the MSV era I think.
The question deals with not just singers. but also MD's and lyricists. Think of the song as a composite product of vocals/music/lyrics--you're doing fine if you discuss any aspect of this.

Who sang "Eppadi paadinaroa"?
Also, it's not "Neela Karunaagaranae" but "Dheena karunaagaranae".

To Sathya keerthi:
I haven't visited the PPP yet. But I followed your URL link in this thread. Neat work. Very informative. But one notable omission among the
MDs is P G Lingappa. One of his hit movies is Thangamalai Ragasiyam (remember Amudhai pozhiyum nilavae). I'm sure he has scored music for quite a few movies.
Kanchana: I had to be proactive about the queries wondering if we were born in AD or BC. I was born in MSV era but remember those days in the early 70's. The chance to here latest songs was very limited. (Madras A 4-5pm on sundays and a few other 1/4 hr durations). So I
had to stick with Vividh Barathy no matter how old the songs were. Some of those pre MSV/TKR songs are still fresh in my memory.

Last year I saw a movie titled "Nandhanaar"; oru
video cassette kadaiyil indha cassette-ai paarththu
eduththu vandhEn; indha cassette ennidam irukku endru
kELvippattu en naNbarin Amma-vum vandhaar paarkka.
We all thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie!
I think this movie must've been one of the earliest
Thamizh movies. ThaNdapaaNi dhEsikar acts as the
"low caste" Nandhanaar who works as a labourer in
the paddy fields owned by a Brahmin. Nandhanaar
LONGS to go to Chidamdaram to have a glimpse of
the Shiva temple (the deep "longing" is portrayed
beautifully via a number of "short" songs sung by
Nandhanaar), but the Brahmin doesn't permit. There
are a number of meetings between these two where
Nandhanaar pleads for permission to go to Chidambaram,
but the Brahmin says "nothing doing"; all these
meetings are again, done via songs, and I feel they are
very beautifully done. Finally, Nandhanaar makes
one serious request and the Brahmin says, "Oh, if
you are so keen to go, then, first plough all the
fields, grow the paddy till it is ready to reap,
and then you go". Nandhanaar is thoroughly dejected
by this offer because that work will easily take
several months to complete; he sings his heart
out to Lord Shiva and faints. Now Lord Shiva appears
and uses his magic to fill all empty fields with
ready-to-reap paddy. Nandhanaar gets up and is
amazed; he understands what has happened; crowd
gathers around; in esctacy he sings a song on
Lord Shiva. The news reaches the Brahmin, he now
realizes the strength of Nandhanaar's BHAKTHI and
comes and prostrates on Nandhanaar's feet. This
moving scene is completely done by a song;
there are no dialogues. I was
certainly moved, and I found that my friend's
mother who had come to watch was completely
"pullarichchufied"! I haven't had a chance to
listen to the songs again, but I would certainly
love to listen to them again and again. Most of
them are beautiful pieces by D.DhEsikar.

The pattu pusthaga collection was the outcome of
roaming around the nook-n-corners of
Madras/Madurai streets during college days.
Akka did a good job in arranging them and
bounded them under various categories.
Also she has a collection of paper
cuttings/clippings about TFM from various
weekly magazines - which I am going thru now and
planning to put them in PPP - the second updated
version will be announced this week.
Last month when I was in Madras, for 3$ I bought
15 songs books - collection of songs by different
singers/MDs/actors.. (the platform before Shanthi
theater - make a note to visit, next time you go)
MakkaL:
I am planning to make a short trip to Singai &
US in nov/dec..if you need any specific PP,
I will try to get it for you.
Rajaram:
RavY is correct about S.Ve.Sekar's dad..you are
confusing him with Rajini's BrotherInLaw.

ONLY BGM - I don't know about any other movie.
For thirudAthEy - MD was SMS but MSV has tuned
one song (its mentioned in the titles) by
PBS.."pAl vaNNam paruvam kandu" (????)
