The success story of Udit Narayan.
Here is the success story of the great indian singer, Udit Narayan.
Just improve pronunciation in Tamil Sir, you are a great Singer.
No image-managed guise, conceit, pretence or airs. Just a whole lot of talent and a musical repertoire carefully shaped over the years - that's
Udit Narayan, the humblest yet the most gifted singer in the Hindi music industry today, well a popular name in south india too.
Like all success stories go, Udit Narayan has a past of sheer toil and hard work preceding him.
Born in a small Nepal-India border town to a farmer father and singer mother, he triggered different hopes and expectations in his parents. While his father willed him to study and choose a steady vocation, his mother believed that singing was what he was cut out for.
Udit's own aspirations were obviously music-inclined, and soon after passing out of school,
he joined the Katmandu radio station as a folk singer and sang in the Mythali language as well as in
Nepalese. But all along, the urge to belong out there in tinsel town was strong.
After about 10 years as a singer with Katmandu radio, in 1978, he received a scholarship in music from the Indian embassy. And that's what triggered his real journey of perseverance and toil.
He moved to Mumbai and trained in classical music at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for close to eight years.
And all along, he approached music directors in the hope of finding the right prospects.
His first break came when music director Rajesh Roshan offered him a small assignment in the film
Unnees Bees, where he was to sing with the legendary Mohammed
Rafi, his childhood icon. Udit also sang for R D Burman in the film
Bade Dilwala, but the the assignments being rather small, his work went unnoticed.
Remains the question of his first-big-break. It came when the now established, then struggling
Anand-Milind recommended Udit Narayan's name to filmmaker Mansoor Khan who was on the look out for a fresh voice to suit debutant Aamir Khan in the film
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, (Pahla nasha). Udit seemed like the ideal choice and was signed up.
The film went on to become a blockbuster and with it the Udit Narayan had arrived. And like they say, there has been no looking
back.
He continues to record for the most sought after of music directors and with his original and versatile voice delivers a remarkable hit eight out of ten times. With scores of hits, awards and a very rewarding career behind him,
Udit can now sit back and watch the progress of his budding singer-son, Aditya
Narayan.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir, due to hit screens later this month features two mellow duets,
Chupke se sun and Socho ke jheelon ka, in the voices of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. A rollicking Udit is back in 2001 with such hits as
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Kasoor and One 2 Ka 4. With strings of chartbusters up his sleeve, it remains to be seen whether the singer weaves his magic this time round as
well.
Udit is a well known name in south india too. He was first introduced in Tamil by the great music director of india, A R Rahman in
Shankar's, Kadhalan, the song, Kadhalikkum pennin. The song was by Udit Narayan and S P
Balasubramaniam. Then came a string of offers from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films.
Udit Narayan has worked with most of the music composers in south, like A R Rahman, Deva, Vidhyasagar, Keeravani, Mani Sharma, S A Rajkumar and many
others. Though his songs become big hits in the regional languages, he has been accused of wrong and ill pronunciations, and killing the
language, if that the case, then even the music directors are to be blamed for it.
His son Aditya Narayan is also an upcoming singer and has sung for A R Rahman in Rangeela and Taal (the child voice).

But I thought the song 'Pehla Nasha' is from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander?! (Udit with Sadhana Sargam).
Of course, QTQK also had some great songs-all by Udit-Papa kehte hain, Ei mere hamsafar, Akhele hain, Gazab ka etc.

I think Udit Narayan has a great and unique voice. His incorrect pronounciation of tamil does not matter to me as I can understand what he is saying. His voice is very suitable for fast-paced and pop-style music. I think his pronounciation of tamil is what makes the song better. I think it would be too boring if he had a strong tamil accent and it is what makes his songs special.

If he had perfect pronunciation, like a chaste tamilian accent, it will be like SPB singing hindi songs (say in Saajan) - it would be horrible....
But, he definitely needs to improve pronunciation.....

Jay....hit songs are not necessarily nice songs... if u know what i mean. Udit Narayan s nice for Hindi, but for TFM... i think we have better choices.

Considering Udit Narayan as a Thamizh singer while overlooking his pronunciation is like considering Hitler without taking the holocaust into account.
Since this forum doesn't consciously promote violence, let's look at a possible ruling in a hypothetical world bent on fairness, a world where art is sacred...Udit will be force-fed pebbles and thrown in a shark infested sea with his tongue wrapped in shark feed and hung out to make even the afterworld safe from his singing.

I can understand you guys criticising udit for his tamil pronounciation. But I dont understand you guys not liking him sing in TFM. I know his Tamizh accent is not great !!! But so what ??? Everybody likes it and finds it cute and thats why the song becomes hit ???Now just think about it logically - if the tamizh was so bad in that song and everyone thought of it the same way as you thought how coul it have become a hit !! Dont get too serious in this kind of issues on film songs !! There are certainly other areas in life where we can be serious and think of doing something better. what possible good you guys get by banning UN from TFM ? The only thing i can guess of is lesser hits. The Hitler without holocaust comparison was not apt here in this case. Anyway, think of the kind of songs MDs are giving to UN. They are not giving some kind of serious numbers like Mun Paniyaa or Oru theivam thantha poove .. Those numbers he got are all fun, jolly numbers. Infact, there are still many singers who do not have a perfect pronounciation in TFM. UN stands out because he is much more apparent and sounds funny too. How many of here in TFM can speak in 100 % pure tamizh .even among ppl with tamizh as mother tongue ,you can see many ppl who cant speak the perfect tamizh. I can still see ppl in newtfmpage.com who cant post in tamil because they dont know how to. There are countless people in tamilnadu - actors, politicians (so called Tamil saviours) who cant say Thamizh's sirappezhuthu 'ZHA' (as in thamizh). so dont be too harsh when criticising UN next time. everyone knows abt his thamizh. But there is a reason to why MDs give a chance to him for certain numbers.
and btw , how come you thamizh people listen to all those songs , make them hits and then come back to newtfmpage.com and condemn his singing !!!

Can someone here post some stats on the hit ratio of the songs sung by the northies in TFM - Take the 2 most proflific for example - Udit Narayan & Sadhana Sargam. Just someone find out the hit ratio - number of hits divided by number of songs sung by them.
Whatever number you get out of it, just see and stare at it for a few minutes. Then, come to this page here, and post all the things that come to your mind.

Maverick: The hit ratios of the northie singers does not reflect their talents as much as it reflects the "sucking up loser" mentality of the south Indian audience. Fat north Indian rejects as heroines and tamil-killing ordinary vocalists as playbacks.

Maverick,
The foremost problem you suffer from is generalizing everybody's taste as one. I can't stand Udit's singing. I'm an individual. I don't speak for others, I speak for myself. If you want to enshrine Udit, that's your prerogative. But if you want to rally for his support in a public forum frequented by Thamizh speakers, you are asking for ridicule.
