Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

"Why i suddenly started hating IR? I did an analysis and arrived at the conclusion.MOHAN and then MURALI.(arjun went the chandrabose way till Shankar thrust an actor in him!).Someone can do a research "how to kill good songs on-screen?".Ameerjan would be one of the anwers. While Murali s career blossomed Kuili was left to give the censors some re-runs!!
"
OISG, you should actually love IR to death for that very reason, not hate him :-) 80s were full of sumbans passing off as heroes and IR had to work off of his own inspiration or very rarely something from the director's side in creating those songs. Why Murali or Mohan? Take Kamal's "Andha oru nimidam" or "Thoongathe thambi thoongathe" that had some wonderful numbers. There was never a dearth of such films in the 80s.

Vijay
I shall consider that! But pathiram arinthu pichai idatha kutram,Vizhalukku neer eraitha kutram erandum IR seithathu!
You reminded me of the horrible "Major" venture "andha oru nimidam".Its Kamal s answer to sivaji s "Ilaya thalaimurai" or "LDRK".
As you said even the pathetically picturised (Stallone sized anuradha...Kashtakalam) "Vazhi onnum theriyala" was a decent one musically.but don t you think the MD has a responsibility to improve the tastes.(Sarithan!Aarambicha edathirke vanthuvittom). Moreover a real inspired lot of directors and actors could have brought out better stuff from IR.
Saravanan
I feel you can continue with the rare ones of 50s and 60s as your choice.your choices are real eye openers.
Kanintha maramthan kalladi padum,carry on!

Thanks all, both for the bouquets and brickbats ( while some of the latter was from the usual quarter (Outsider alias sendhil alias KKV Fan alias--), some of it was real unexpected)--oh, well, its all in the game!
These Lata songs have been asked for in other threads, and some posters were very nostalgic about them. Even as late as the late 70s and early 80s, when I started to listen to Radio Ceylon, these songs were very frequently asked for and featured. I was struck with wonder that the people of Mattakkalappu, Nuwareliya or Kandy, still remembered and cherished the songs of a film which they most probably never got to see and which had come and gone decades ago.
I added that extract from Balasarswathi's interview as I felt it was pertinent to Vanaratham and it songs. It is still a puzzle to me why Balasaraswathi's songs didn't become so popular- I have never heard them on radio.
Btw, I have provided links to Vanaratham songs , including those by Balasaraswathi, in the 'Unearthing rare songs' thread.

Saravanan,
Thanks for the links to those beautiful RB’s songs from Vanaratham. Never heard them before. It is my guess that they were not released in the form of vinyl records along with other Vanaratham songs at that time (if so, was LM behind it?). Perhaps it may be the reason for them not being played in the SLBC and as such they didn’t become popular.

Song of the Day: A N.C.Vasanthakokilam Song from ??.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ncvk1.rm
- Thanks to Mr. Rangan for this song. It is nice listening to this lost voice. The song is "niththiraiyil vandhu", a Sudhanandha Bharathiyaar written one. I am not sure whether this is a film song, though it sounds like one.
- Randor Guy has written in detail on NCVK here: http://www.sangeetham.com/mc_vasanthakokilam.htm

Saravanan:
Thanks for the Vanaratham songs. 'endhan kaNNALan karai nOkki pOgiRAr, nadhiyE nee meLLap pO'.. I am hearing after ages! Great nostalgic song.. in spite of LM's poor thamizh pronunciation. The other songs plus the associated stories relating to Vanaratham are all new to me. I am sure that's true for most others too. Take the brickbats lightly.. I don't think anyone meant anything serious. Some fellow has lamented about losing 20 rupees for listening to these songs; very sad! Instead of coming to SOTD thread and making such comments he could have gone to coolgoose to dl 'kalyAnam kattikkittu kutti pOdavA' etc.
I am yet to listen to the BS songs of Vanaratham. I am looking forward to that.

bb: Thanks for the song 'nithiraiyil vandhu'. It has been a long time since I heard this one. Sudhanandha Bharathi songs were popular in the 40s and 50s. I remember singing his songs in school prayer.

rjay, many thanks for your elaborate write up on 'Athhadi paavaadai'. Thanks for confirming my doubt that it is based on Brindhavana Saarangaa.
NCV was considered to give a stiff competition to MS.NCV's 'Thandhai thaai irundhaal ' is an unforgettable hit in Shanmugapriya .

today's SOTD. I remember there is a PBS song which begins with the same pallavi "Nithiraiyil Vandhu" sung beautifully by PS without any accompaniments. Is it "Nilave Ennidam NerungAdhE" ?
- From: Saravanan (@ 213.42.2.9)
on: Mon Aug 11 12:25:37 EDT 2003
Yes, sriram. You're right--KRV sings this bit softly, thinking wistfully of Gemini Ganesh--he hears it, and expresses his inability to reciprocate her feelings by singing 'Nilavae ennidam nerungaathae'

bb & Mr. Rangan, thanks for the song, and the link to the informative write-up by Randor Guy.
Sudhanandha Bharathiar (1893-1990) was a great poet with a spiritual bent of mind. His lyrics for film songs like ‘Maalai mayangugura neram'( (Radha)Jayalakshmi in Maragatham), ‘Sirippu thaan varuguthayya(Seergazhi Govindarajan’s first song in Pon Vayal)and‘Vetkkamaai irukkudhadi’(PL & Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi in Paar Magalae Paar) are unforgettable. It was Sudhanandha Bharathiar’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables that K Ramnoth filmed as Ezhai Padum Paadu. Vasanthakolilam’s ‘Aananda nadanam aadinaal’ is another great song written by Sudhanandha Bharathiar.
Mr.Randor Guy has mentioned that Vasanthakokilam passed away when in her late 40s. But from whatever I have read/heard she died when she was just 30 years old.
Nagappattinam Chandrasekaran Vasanthakokilam (real name Kamakshi) was born in 1921 and died in 1951. (The name Vasanthakokilam holds some charm till this day- Mouli named the heroine’s grandmother as Vasanthakokilam in Nala Damayanthi!)
NCV’s songs in films like Venuganam-1941 (Punniya dhinamindre Srikannan pirandha punniya dhinam, Eppo varuvaaro endhan kali theera, Inbam inbam jagamengum), Gangavathar-1942 ( Anandam alavilla miga anandam, Kaavin manohara kaatchiyin maanbe--maan thulli odum--mayil magizhndhaadum, Idhuvenna vedhanai, Paanganacholai alangaram paarthidave tharum inbam, Ananda maya vaanulageethae, Vani arulpurivaai Kalaivani arul purivaai), Haridas-1944 ( Enathu manam thulli vilayaadithe, Kadhiravan udhayam kandu kamalangal mugam malarum, Enathu uyir nathan hrudayam nondhe ennai pirindhaan, Kanna vaa manivanna vaa, and a singular duet with MKT- ‘Thottadharkkellaam thappeduthaal’), Valmiki-1946 ( Sundarananda vaikuntha hare mukuntha, Puvi meedhu thava gnaniye uyar pugazh mevum periyor thanpaal, Jaya jaya bhuvanapathae paalaya jaya karunajalathe, Poithavazhum mayappuvi vaazhvu) and Krishna Vijayam ( Navaneetha Kannanae radhamoga, Karuna nidhe Madhava nithya kalyana guna Madhava, Porumai kadalaagiya bhoomadevi) have a hallowed place in the history of tfm.
NCV’s thanippadal collections are something to cherish- ‘Yen palli kondeeraiyya’, ‘Varuvaano vanakkuyilae’, ‘Aasai konden vandae’ –all fill one with despair at the cruel hands of fate that stilled this wonderful voice in its prime.
Vasanthakokilam—the nightingale whose spring was all too short.
