Why not discuss carnatic or film music in this forum rather, Sujitha? `newtfmpage.com/forum' has a no. of threads (permanent / temporary) that discuss these topics:-) I assume you're a new visitor to this site, NOM:-)

Athinarayanan:
I am gasping for breath!! You have just summed-up what exactly was in my mind!! In fact after my earlier posting, I was talking to another music fan where I was mentioning to him about the screams of ARR like in ROJA, PUDHIYA MUGAM, etc... IT would very much sound like a particular religion's prayer recital!! That would have been OK for a movie like ROJA......but not for every other movie that followed ROJA.
Take for instance PADAYAPPA.....2 songs.....they are the BGMs....Suthi Suthi Vandheega and then Vetri Kodi Nattu......these are the 2 songs that appear as BGMs......
So am still searching ARRs "rare ragas" in his BGMs!!
Maybe we should ask ARR at least to go to my page to take a glimpse of some awesome BGM tracks tuned in by the Musical legend IR (When this young wizard claims he hasn't seen TITANIC, he would still say that he hasn't heard MAHANADHI, GUNA, RAJA PARVAI and what not!!). I am not a IR fanatic....but then, cannot even think of ARR doing any sort of justice to the BGMs he has composed until now!!

Latest lifts by ARR :
kAdhalar dhinam
enna vilai azhaghE - thangap padhakkathin mElE
rOjA rOjA rOjA - ennai vittAl yArumillai
sangamam :
sowkiyama kaNNe - vAnathin meedhu mayilAdak kaNdEn
Just this morning I was listening to sangamam - varAha nadhikkaraiyOram & mArgazhith thingAl allavA and I was very impressed. Especially mArgazhith thingAl allava - his most raja-esque song till now. Superb ! (I actually thought the current rAjA probably would not have bettered ARR in sangamam - only songs - Blasphemy). I only hope that these songs have not been lifted from somewhere.
ARR is a smart lifter - a cut here, a snip there glue then all together and presto a new song !

pg,
sowkiyama and vaanathin meedhu mayil aada kanden are based in same raag - so they will obviously sound similar. When raagas are the same, there is adificulty in calling something as a "life"
For eg, yen veetu thotathill poovellam kettu paar (in gentleman) icould be called a life from famous thirupugazh naada vindu kalaadhee namo nama, but it cant be said about souwkiyama kanne soukiyama.

Coming back to the interview, the interview was quite interesting and such interviews discussing technical and musical aspects of TFMs are rather rare.

This "songs-sounding-similar-bcos-they-are-in-same-raga" is happening too often for ARR. I don't believe this is is coincidental.

Guys, this is not the right place to talk of lifts,
REx and others
do not spoil the interview thread by your crazy raja claims, he also lifts, so there is no point in discussing -- who is smart lifter etc.
The time song, sung by sujatha is just like msv song from Poikal kuthurai --- do you agree, just few lines cannot be termed as copy.,
Arr uses mand to maximum, like raja using tabla or bhava dharani for every other score --- arr might use mand, might be his limitation. It ends there.
Guys, live and let live others.
Please continue the interview discussion

I am not dictating terms, you might be the lord to god, I dont care, you compared raja again with Arr recording etc and started the routine childish IR supportive talk., when people were discussing about his interview.

is it?? Great to know the joke of the millenium. Thanks for pointing!
srikanth:
Even I do not care if you care or not. I was commenting about ARR's comments which is very much under the domain of his interview at Kumudam. If situation needs I will compare him with IR, MSV or even Naushad. You are not a cybercop to brand the comments of other people as "childish", "crazy" etc. TFM DF page is under safe hands!
Sorry for the digression. Guys please continue.

ARR fans, please accept that ARR has been poor in all his BGM scores so far(I do not see him improving either). Therefore his statement "I use rare raagas in BGMs" is downright ridiculous. (Frankly I have no interest in finding out those 'rare' raagas).Period. End of discussion.

As far as ARR's BGM's are concerned:
Sure, he is weak in that line. But, Roja's BGM was praised by a lot of people. It was DIFFERENT and in that movie QUITE GOOD. It was a pleasure after all the ordinary 'aracha maa' that was going on before that.
Now for those who would like the prelude to this interview.
About 15 years ago...in the North MD's like R.D. Burman, S.D.Burman, Laximikanth-Pyarilal, Shankar-Ganesh were at the top. It was a time when singers in the South craved to sing in Hindi. One or two of those that did go, gave hot interviews, something those of yesterdays generation won't forget easily. NOBODY expected that to turn upside down so fast. In 1992, ARR entered like a stormm. Consecutive victories. Seven years...the Hindi Film Industry that rejected our people are waiting for his callsheets at Subrayanagar, Chennai. One 'Vande Matharam' made him be spoken in every corner of India. Next Rahman's music is crossing the border. The news that he is working with West musicians comes like honey to the ear.
We met ARR one night at his home. He looked fresh as though he had just gotten a bath. He was wearing his favorite black color cloths. Occasionnally he's trademark nervous 'vekuli' laughs. It dawned on us that all this fame and achievements have not gotten to his head. He didn't have the 'What do you know about music to ask me' sort of attitude. Anger and this man seemed very far away. For lots of questions, he answered philosophically(thathuvaarthamaaga).

!!!!WARNING!!!!! DISGRESSION
Talking about Oh SOna song in Vaali I would like to mention here that the second line onwards (Vaasal vandha vennilavu allava till Sona I love you da) is a direct lift from a very popular chinese New year song Kong si Kong Si Kong si ni... Perhaps NOV can confirm this.
Sorry for the disgression...
Please continue your ENLIGTENED discussion.

The best BGM of ARR I could think about is From PADAYAPPA where he uses the music of VETRI KODI KATTU song followed by HI HI HI shouting in the backgroud!!!!! Ada pongappa neenga Vera ARR BGM appadinnu solli joke adikadheenga........

It amuses me greatly, that even after so many years and after so many discussions, the so-called critics of ARR are the ones who pay the most attention to him and his music.
Ironic, isn't it?
ARR copies and has copied. I think it has been proven.
So, why the relentless attack on him?
Can't stand his success, huh? :-))
And contrary to many non-ARR-fans here, I believe his BGM has improved considerably.
On the other hand, please don't forget that "paanaiyil irunthaalthaan agappaiyil varum." :-))
Therefore, it is pointless to compare him with anyone else.
Kamesh - It is always great fun to uncover Deva's inspirations.
But I will be a hypocrite if I claim to have not enjoyed many of his songs. :-((
I think you did a great job with the translation. Do continue, when you receive the next edition.

some one took pains to post about the interview, live and let live.
NOV, nice points, beware rexji will pounce on you and will call you a dicator, I had that experience some time ago
