Ravi: Thanks for your prompt response. With your suggestion, I am starting this new thread.
Hi Friends,
I'm Nirupama from Vancouver, Canada. Since I visit this site quite often and have found out your passion for tamil film music, I thought this bit of information will be interesting for you.
With a help of a friend who hosts a hindi show on radio, I started my own radio show for tamil film music. Since there are no other tamil radio shows in Vancouver, I thought tamils living here might appreciate this. But to my surprise, I received many calls from non-tamils(White Canadians, etc) inquiring about this strange yet wonderful eastern(or fusion, rather) music. The show is only three-weeks old, and every week I've been getting these phone calls. I've described this type of music to the best of my abilities, but still their curiosity is overwhelming.
Some of their comments in their own words are:
"Hey, I love this music! What is it called?" , "This is great! Where is it from?" , "I like traditional Indian music, but what you're playing sounds very interesting!" Some even asked me for the film and song names.
In order to find out more about their music preferences, I tried playing songs from different periods, styles etc. What do guys think about this? Any guesses on whose music style or what type of tamil film music they like?? I'll talk more about that later.....
Nirupama

Dear Nithin,
Yes, I am the same Madhan who missed the chance to meet IR in Goa - Thanks for your compliments..
Thanks to the TFM's DF, all those idhayakkumuralgal + thudippugal of mine with respect to IR's music are getting full-fledged expressions. In fact, most of the times, I silently watch the proceedings when people simply send me into raptures of laughter with all kinds of incredible fights over IR - ARR . I post only when I really feel something needs to be clarified.
The explanation I had tried to give to Nirupama regarding many compositions of IR is actually something that has always been bothering me and my group of friends at Chennai (BTW, I am a product of Jawahar Vidyalaya, Ashok Nagar, Chennai - 83) since our school days - now I have the oppurtunity to share all of these thoughts..
BTW, I greatly admire/enjoy your postings on music in general. Please do not ask me as to what makes IR compose music the way he does - if I had known, I would be somewhere else - can you explain why certain Phenomena just happen ? no, you cannot.
Coming back to the composing style of IR, there used to be a time, when just listening to the sway of the violins, we used to scream out loud that it is IR's music !!
Even now, in the song, "Oru pattaam poochi" from KM, in the second interlude before the second charanam begins, KJY sings "Poovaana yen nenjam poraada" in Carnatic style with very well masked ghamakas adorning the rendition and thereafter comes the chorus, ending up in a Mini crescendo "....mounangal mozhiyaagumaa" , a la WCM BAroqueian style, immediately followed by a WC based flute , typically IRish -
now , what would you call this music ? - WCM, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Indian classical , or a mixture of all these ? No.
In fact, the moment we start dissecting IR's music into its components, we will end up with bewilderment - otherwise, how else would you desrcibe the play of the keyboards, followed by a set of violins giving a cushioning caress to our senses, in a non - classical creative version, immediately followed by another set of violins, concluding that former piece with definitve , once again well masked elegant Carnatic notes in the second interlude of "Naan yenbadhu neeyallavo deva devi " - O! man! forget the idea of getting an insight into IR's mind -
in the words of A.Panneerselvan, a music critic, "IR's music cannot be categorised as something abstract, or , something definitive ,nor can it be called as an identiless monolith comprising different ingredients of genres of music" in Frontline, September 10, 1993 issue.
Yes, that is what it is all about - even while trying to establish a certain style of his own, IR keeps evolving endlessly - this is perhaps the most amazing feature of this diminutive man, for whom even the word Genius woudn't describe his potential.
Here we come to the single most inference - I recall here a Kamal Hassan answer in an interview:
"Illaadha oru vishayathhai , iruppadhu pol kaanbithhu/ seidhu, mattravargalai bramikka vaikkum thiramai oru unmaiyyaana kalaignanin mukkiyamaana amsam " -
Maestro IR has been doing this and much more, for more than 20 years and kept us enthralled.

Nirupama,
I have tried myself to introduce indian songs,

to give to them to my friends, and who ever intrested in, mostly the responses were +ve. I
tried to list them here. I will be happy to know, if Some of them are worth playing in your show.

Madhan,
You have asked me to consult other DF members about the technical aspects of music when you have an abundent knoweldge in this area yourself. Maybe you're just being very modest. Am I right?
You are absolutely right in stressing about the need to do research in this area. I will try and get a hold of that audio cassette that you mentioned. In the mean time, please continue to share your knoweldge on TFM and classical music. It is very much appreciated.

Nithin,
I think it is wonderful that you're considering to start a radio show in Chicago. The radio station that I'm involved in is a non-profit local station maintained by the University administration. If you're not a student from this university, you have to enroll as a member of their Radio Society and follow a month of training program offered by them. Then, you will be given a time-slot. Do you have any such local stations like that in Chicago? We also have a commercialized multicultural station here in Vancouver. I think you just need sponsorship and maybe also experience/training to start a show there. Not too sure about this though. Hope this information is helpful to you. If you need more info. please email me and I can try and find out for you. Good luck to you, Nithin!

Nithin,
My name is Prakash. I also am from Chicago. It is nice of you to have asked Nirupama about the TFM Program, and I should thank Nirupama that she has given us an insight about this. I would request that you should also join the other DF about meeting in Chicago. I am not very sure that you are in that list for Chicago. We can surely try and bring up this topic when we have a TFM meet in Chicago, and may be generate some more information and may be some sponsorships if possible. I have been in the US for only just a few months and hence am not very sure of the ways and means to fo this. But, I am sure there may be others who can be a guiding light to this and we can have TFM prog. in Chicago.
Anbudan,
Prakash Krishnamurthy

Udhaya,
I have no problem in incorporating your idea regarding the statistics of the show(or the requests from non-indians). I'm just not very sure if I will get regular responses from them or not. I may not get a single phone call from them for the next two weeks and then what am I supposed to do? Let me know what you think about this.
Srikanth, Badri Raghavan,
Thanks for your good wishes and support. I need all of your help to make this more successful.
Easwaran Hariharan,
Thanks for some really good song suggestions. I have in fact tried playing some of them already and received some good responses as well. For example, Ramanin Mohanam & Vaa Sakhi. Thanks again and give me some more if you can.
Geetha,
Thanks for giving me some wonderful show ideas. I've had similar thoughts myself. I don't have any of IR's instrumental albums with me(still trying to get them), but my friend pointed out to me that my signature music is indeed a piece from one of those albums. I just got that piece as a fill-in music from one of the audio cassettes. I love that piece, and I'm glad it's from an IR album. Thanks again Geetha for your suggestions, and I'll come back to you when I need some more help in Carnatic music, etc.

Nirupama, I understand your dilemma with the non-Indian request list. Why don't you just share with us the top requests for each week regardless of who is requesting. If it happens to be someone new to Indian music then, mention it, if not, just give the reason why people request a song and share with us any interesting exchanges between you and the audience. I just feel that TFM page would be invigorated by being in touch with a Radio show host.
Nithin, all of the above applies to you too once you start your show in Chicago. Maybe this is how we can ear mark our TFM chapters globally, through radio shows.
Good luck to both of you and keep us posted.
