Why did you shift to AR Rehman in 'New'? Deva is your permanent music
director, right?
For a long time I wanted to work with AR Rehman. It kept getting
postponed. Once I was on my way from Mumbai to Chennai by plane. AR
Rehman was sitting in front of me. I told him that I wanted to work
with him in a film. He asked me to tell him the story. I agreed. He
was surprised that I was ready with the story. The journey was I hour
25 minutes long. By the time the plane landed at Chennai, he had
signed up the film.
I haven't seen a genius like that who is immersed 24 hours in music
with his keyboard. I'm happy that I got to work with a genius like
that. It's because a Tamilian Indian who lives in Subbarayan Street,
Kodambakkam is a world known celebrity now. This is not an ordinary
achievement. I hope that our relationship continues for a very long
time. Songs have come out very well. AR Rehman is like an ocean. You
just have to equip yourself with a good oxygen tank and be prepared
to go real deep to come out with treasures.
But, AR Rehman seems to be synonymous with delays these days…
He is very clear about it. If you have patience, you can approach
him. Else, don't confuse yourself. He is the goose that lays golden
eggs. If you harass it too much, you will get into troubles. He is
very sincere with his work. I have seen him sleep only three hours a
day. Directors keep repeating him only because he is good, right?

FROM HARRIS JEYARAJ :
I have learnt many things from many music directors. If you single out A.R.Rahman, I can quote his relentless labour, high enthusiasm, and commitment to the tasks at hand. He would never compromise on the quality of a song. He is quality-conscious and individualistic.
-- music director Harris Jayaraj (2001)
from HFM to arr :
I appreciate A.R's work. He has a penchant for being international. I think he is talented. A.R. has taught me the value and meaning of sound in my recording and thanks to him, today I am my own arranger.
-- Anu Malik, music director (Nov 2000)
We admire Rahman's work. He is a different kind of music director and has genuine knowledge about the art.
-- Jatin-Lalit, composers (Dec 2000)
It's not enough to be successful. It's important to attempt something new. Rahman's contribution to film music will never be forgotten. He has given a new dimension and understanding to sound.
-- lyricist Javed Akhtar (Filmfare, Feb 2001)
I admire three things about Rahman. Among the young composers he probably is the most original. He has a strong sense of melody and his harmony is unbeatable. Finally he gives his music a rich tonal color, richness through his combination of instruments, a character to the music.
-- director Shyam Benegal (India West, Jan 2001)
It is every singer’s dream to work with A R Rahman because he makes you feel like God. I worked with Rahman for a beautiful song called E Nazneen suno and for Nayak. Of course, I did get nervous when I had to record with him, especially since he records at an unearthly hour like three in the night. But he makes you feel as if you are AR Rahman and he is just an ordinary fellow. Other music directors should learn to be humble like him. Today’s music directors do not respect their singers. If one singer is not around they replace them with another. Also, they demoralise you when you are in front of the mike.
-- Singer Abhijeet (SRK World, 2001)
A R Rahman not only gave me the break (in Dil Se), he taught me a lot of techniques in composing music arrangement and recording. He was the one to impress upon the need to be technically perfect before any producer could be expected to invest in you.
-- singer-composer Sukhvinder Singh (Deccan Herald, 2000)
Rahman revolutionised sound. He's a trend-setter in more ways than one. The only thing common between us is the fact that we started out in advertising and moved on to films. There's just no comparison otherwise. Rahman is a legend of sorts.
-- music director Sandeep Chowta (Filmfare, 2002)
He's a genius. Working with him in Dil Se was a milestone in my career. He has single-handedly changed the sound of music in Hindi movies. He has even changed the format of songs and has popularised fine verse.
-- Gulzar (Filmfare, 2002)
We worship Rahman's music.
-- Ehsaan, (of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio), The Hindu, 2001

MusicLover,
I have just come back after watching Virumaandi, so don't bother if sound too 'Virumaandish'!! :-)
What I gave was just an example. That is like Koththala Devar's view of an incident. The truth lies in what Virumaandi has to say!! :-) No wonder you still sound like Koththala Devar! I am happy that my portrayal was realistic as well! :-)

Man's World is India's leading Men's magazine. Its January 2004 issue is a Bollywood special featuring a list of 50 most powerful people in Bollywood. ARR is No. 12 on the list and is the only non-actor/producer/director on it.
12 A R Rahman
If there is one original genius working in Bollywood (he actually works out of Chennai) it is Allah Rakha Rahman. The greatest music director to work for Hindi films after R D Burman , Rahman works on his own terms. He commands of a fee of over Rs. 2 crore. He is dedicated to his art to the point of obsession. He works out of his studio in Chennai, and producers who want to work with him have to travel there to see him compose. He normally works through the night, so it is common to see big ticket producers who usually dont get up before noon in Mumbai, waiting outside his studio early mornings to meet him. Subhash Ghai had to delay Taal by nearly two months because the music was not ready, but when it did come out, it helped lift the quality of what was at best an average movie. Dil Se.. rode to success on the back of Rahman's music and Lagaan had its musical moments as well.
He was a rock musician till Mani Ratnam discovered him and signed him for Roja. The rest is history. With the success of Bombay Dreams on London's West End he is an international super star too. He was recently invited to do songs for the musical based on the Lord of The Rings which is to be staged in London as well. Bombay Dreams debuts in Broadway this summer which could prove to be his biggest moment. For as everyone knows, if you are recognized by the American audience, you've reached the pinnacle of your profession.
