Harris Jeyaraj - An Interview with him. (found in some site).
*************************************************************
Harris Jayaraj's has become a household name at the moment in the homes of Tamilians living in all parts of the world. He is a soft person and in the usual tradition of our music directors he is a cool, calm, collected, sweet, graceful, humble and pious person.
An endearing smile proceeds every reply from him. He answers to the points. There is clarity in his thought and reply. Furthermore, he is transparent, open-minded.
After a conversation with him, we have come to a conclusion that he will cater to the needs of the lovers of music in the years ahead. No doubt, he will enthrall the whole world of music by captivating the hearts and minds of the music fans all over the world, including the Tamilians ofcourse. Soon, he would be gaining fame like Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman.
In all probability our prophecy would come true as he possesses all the high qualities and good demeanours that go to make a maestro of music. Here is a rendezvous with him:
Will you give us a prelude about you? What is the basis for your musical blend of mind?
I belong to Chennai. My father is a guitarist. So music has to run in my blood. No wonder, I turned my attention towards music. Blossoming as a keyboard player, I had served under forty music directors. Then I set my music to many advertisement films. And now I have stepped into the celluloid world through the film 'Minnale'.
You have become very popular overnight through your very first film as A.R.Rahman has done before. Did you expect such a sensational victory from 'Minnale'?
(Smilingly) God is the cause for all this. At first, I yearned basically that my first film should hit the big screen without fail, like all newcomers. The actual release of the film itself is one half of success. I am also happy that the moviegoers are involved in the music also as they are interested in the story, screenplay, histrionic dimensions and the element of comedy of a film. It was of paramount importance for me that the cassette was released two months in advance of the release of the picture. The cassette broke the record in its sale. Fans became eager to see the pasteurization of the songs. This expectation helped a lot in the triumph of the film.
What do you have to tell about the song, 'Vaseegara' which has captured the imagination of all film-goers?
I am wonder-struck at the warm welcome accorded to that song. I paid the same attention to that song which I gave to the other songs. What you hear in 'Vaseegara' is the second tune composed by me. When I recorded the lyrical lines with my first tune, I could not get the needed satisfaction. The song looked odd in comparison with the rest. I promptly removed the song from the scheme of things. When I created the song based on another tune, it appealed to my heart. I must thank the director and the producer of the film for giving one the green signal to have another go at the song. I am delighted that the song has eventually clicked. With all the fans following for the song, I for one, don't see anything special in it. It is a good song and that's all. There is nothing great about it.
Bombay Jayashree did not take her roots in Tamil filmdom, after her song 'Narumugaiye'. Yet you choose her to render 'Vaseegara'. Can you explain.....
At first I wanted to recording the song with a Kajal songster. Then I thought of the great classical singer, Bombay Jayashree, for she has a different, unique voice of merit. I was particular in not utilizing the regular play-back singers in my maiden venture. I wanted new talents in order to underline my individuality.
Opportunity came flooding towards you. But you have accepted only a few films. Why so?
To be precise, thirty-four films came my way at one moment. Opportunities were galore not only from Tamil filmdom, but also from the industries of Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. I had a chance to score music from Chiranjeevi to all leading stars. But I always hold quality high. You cannot concentrate on all things, if your hands are full. Lesser the number of films, the better would be the effect. Moreover, I require four months to finish the music for any movie. Therefore I have accepted just five films for the present. Yet I would be providing music for just three films during the current year. These assignments would keep me busily engaged until December, 2002. I can accept any new film only in 2003.
You have worked with A.R.Rahman. What do you like about him the most? What lesson have you learnt from him?
I have learnt many things from many music directors. If you single out A.R.Rahman, I can quote his relentless labour, high enthusiasm, and commitment to the tasks at hand. He would never compromise on the quality of a song. He is quality-conscious and individualistic. There are more things to tell about him. I have imbibed several sterling qualities of him.
You might have heard songs of many languages. What do you say about Tamil songs?
I mostly listen to Tamil songs. At the moment Tamil songs alone are riding the wave of success. They are of very high quality. They stand out and outshine their rivals. Music in Tamil film industry has many talented persons to its credit. Have not our Shankar Mahadevan and Bhavadarini bagged national awards recently?
How do you feel when people compare you with Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman?
They have a right to do so. But the fact is this. Whereas I am still studying in the lower kindergarten class in the school of world music, they have already reached many milestones. After all, I am a student in my chosen walk of life. I have a lot to learn. I think I am not qualified to be compared with them.
Today, it is Pazhani Bharathi for Ilayaraja and Vairamuthu for A.R.Rehman. Will you bank upon any particular lyricist following the trends set by them?
I have chosen my lyricists in the past, as per the suggestion of the directors. They fix the lyricist as per the requirement of the story. Vali and Thamarai penned the songs for 'Minnale'. But it is Vairamuthu who writes for the next three films of mine.
The lyrics of 'Minnale' had been written according to the tunes set by you. Whether your music would permit composing tunes in accordance with the lyrics?
(Laughingly) The current trend is just like that. Definitely I have scored music as per the demand and dictates of the lyrical lines. I can cite two songs for the film, 'Samurai' and one from 'majnu' as examples in this connection.
I will never 'adopt ' tunes from other languages !
Tamilians abroad hum 'Vaseegara' as if it is their national anthem !
The difference between a pop musician and a music director will be known in Re- recording.

A.R.Rahman with Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is a mascot, luck-bringer. He provides the Midas' touch to any one who makes friends with him. A rendezvous with him always proves to be a jock-pot for all, especially for the south indian film personalities.
Once he danced together with Michael Jackson, Prabhudeva shot into fame and is rated as the fittest person in India to be compared with the dancer-singer of world renown.
Now A.R.Rehman has joined hands with Michael Jackson, the dancing legend, for producing his album, 'Ekam Sathyam'.
A.R.Rahman in his own rights another legend has scored the music for the sanskrit songs in the album. The album is slated to be released at the fag end of this year.
Mmm. Michael Jackson has come close to A.R.Rahman. A formidable coalition! When would our super star act alongside Jackie Chan, the immaculate fighter - cum - actor? Will this dream come true?
God only knows!
