I was just wondering about the usefulness of songs in movies and felt that in most cases the picturisation did not complement the songs. However, there appear to be some song sequences which stand apart by their depiction of the song in progress. Most of these would have songs in the background, I guess. But their might also be some where the hero and heroine singing makes sense to the movie and the lyrics. Care to help me build a comprehensive list ?

Let me start with my list -
1. Kallelam Nogudhadi - En Bommakutti Ammavukku
2. Valai Osai - Sathya
3. Paruvamae - Nenjathai Killadhe
4. Vennilave Venilave - Minsaara Kanavu
and more to follow...

Srinath:
A prime depictor of "mood songs" is Balu Mahendra. I haven't seen much of his newer work, but from his older films, the following songs are in the background of the action:
pOOvaNNam pOla nenjam -- azhiyaadha kOlangaL
pOOngaaRRu pudhiraanadhu -- mOOnRam piRai
rAjanOdu rANi vandhu -- sathi leelavathi
rAja rAja chOzhan nAn -- rettaivAl kuruvi
vaLayosai kalakala -- sathyA (dir: Suresh Krishna)
I guess peoples' definition of "well-picturized" is different, but I found the above to be really well done; they are love songs that show playful interaction between the protagonists and not PT exercise-style dances.
Another great set of mood songs is from nAyakan: "nEE oru kAdhal sangEEtham" and "andhi mazhai mEgam". Another good ManiRathnam song is pOOmAlayE thOL sEravAA from "pagal nilavu" (though there's a shot of Murali and Revathi neck deep in water that's very similar to a shot in Norma Rae :-()
A classic example of hero-heroine singing AND making situational sense is in vaRumayin niRam sivappu: the "thandhana thathana" song is really a game of one-upmanship between them.

Actually almost all the songs from Anjali would qualify as competent Music Videos, but I felt they were kind of out-of-place in the movie, except perhaps the title song.
Poovanam really touched off a chord in my heart Bharat ! What a beautifully different song. If I remember right, that was the only song in the movie - perhaps I am mistaken. But the mood created by the movie was at its most effective during that song :-)
Another reasonably good example of hero-heroine-singing-and-still-not-appearing-absurd is the song from Mudhal Mariyadhai - Poongatru thirumbuma
MR again - Manram vandha thendralukku from Mouna Raagam
Sendhoorapoove - 16 vayadhinile
And another one of my whopper favourites ! -
"Ithazhil Kadhai Ezhudum" from Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. But the sequence is a little too 'fantastic' (as in fantasy-like) for a song of that calibre.
Sindhu Bhairavi - Mogham ennum theeyil... sivakumar singing on the rocks by the sea-shore.
Chinna chinna kannanukku - Gemini Ganesan movie - I don't remember the name.
My list seems to be coming down by notches with every additional song ! Somebody help !
Ah ! of course...Karpoora Bommai Onru and Nee paathi, Naan paathi from Keladi Kanmani !

yAr andha nilavu from "shanthi", one of the very few songs in which Sivaji appears (relatively) restrained and actually brings out the introspective nature of the song. I thought the smoking was a nice touch.
One of my all-time favorites: pArtha vizhi pArthapadi from "Guna"; very striking visual images, perfectly in keeping with the sexual undercurrent throughout the film. unnai nAnaRivEn was also very well-shot.

"Thakita thathimi" from Salangai Oli, especially when Jayapradha's widow character wears the kungumam to please Kamal's character and Kamal is dancing on top of a well under the pouring rain.
She steps out and he freezes, for he hasn't seen her in so many years, just then the song goes into opera-like hummings. . ."aaahhh ahhhh ahhh ahahaa". Kamal puts his palm over Jayapradha's forehead like a visor to prevent the kungumam from dissolving in the rain. Movie irony at its best. The song slowly winds down with SPB slow peddling the final few words. The song, the music, the delivery, a masterstroke by IR. Kudos to Vishwanath, the director, for a marvelous sequence.

Picturization of "Kalyaana Thaenilaa.." from MOUNAM SAMMATHAM was a classic, in my (humble) opinion. Melodious music, rhyming lyrics, and great singing characterized the song. However, the bigger attraction for me was the "restrained" and controlled acting by Mammootti and Amala. They brought out the romance, glamour, fantasy and the right mood withut indulging into the usual
histrionics.

IMO, one of the best songs of IR to fit the situation is
'poomalai vaangi vanthan' from sindhu bhairavi.
I will never get tired of mentioning the song in this forum.i have talked about it several times.
this particular scene in this movie haunts me.
in the second interlude after the flute piece there is a pause. sulakshana in the movie asks sivakumar's driver to leave as siva uses the car to go to bars. the driver accepts the money and starts crying at the sad thought of leaving after working for so many years. at that time watch out for the violins!! the violins gradually pick up and reach a crescendo. SIMPLY A CLASSIC! i have been left in a trance whenever i hear this piece.the interlude can be appreciated only by people with a passion for carnatic music. IR has dissected kaanada in this song.
the merging of this scene with this song speaks about the directorial genius of balachander as well.
as srinath requested this is an example of another song which comes only in the background. the first interlude music when siva
comes home drunk is also amazing.IMO no one other than IR could have scored like this for the movie. balachander should never forget IR in the whole of his life for this movie.

18. Mogham ennum theeyil - Sindhu Bhairavi
19. Chinna chinna kannanukku - ? Gemini Ganesan starrer
20. Karpoora Bommai Onru - Keladi Kanmani
21. Nee paathi, Naan paathi - Keladi Kanmani
22. Poove Poochoodava - Poove Pochoodava
23. yAr andha nilavu - Shanthi
24. pArtha vizhi pArthapadi - Guna
25. Unnai Nan Ariven - Guna
26. Thakita thathimi - Salangai Oli
22. Kalyaana Thaenilaa - Mounam Sammatham
23. Poomalai Vaangi Vanthan - Sindhu Bhairavi
and
24. Sangeetha Swarangal - Azhagan
I would also like to see others come up with some Golden Oldies. Though dramatics played a major part in song sequences those days, I am sure there are more than a handful of movies where songs would have made good Music Videos by themselves.

srinath,
are u planning to make a video music collection? if so, how are u going to do it?in india, maybe? do shops record assorted songs on video cassettes? if so do u know roughly how much they charge?
if u are planning to make a collection i suggest that u group together songs of a particular period, say the early eighties, in a single cassete and so on. it has always been my wish to record the classics of IR from the early eighties in a single audio cassette and then record the same songs in the same sequence in a video casette too.i have not had time so far to do it.living in U.S. does'nt help either.
now to the collection....
i do not see many mani rathnam's movies in the list, noted for their song picturisation.
some of the songs are
1. china chinna aasai- village girl's pranks and playfulness, picturised well
2. pani vizhum nilavu- mouna ragam, hero and heroine do not sing but feelings conveyed beautifully by the song, picturised with taj mahal as the backdrop.
dance videos
1. paatukku paatu- anjali, superb choreography,
excellent beat, kids dance better than heros and heroines.
2. punnagayil minsaaram- bharathan, another excellent song. acording to prabhudeva the most difficult song he has ever choreographed, because he made vijaykanth dance!!! editing was excellent and the dance picturised with just a white background was a new experience for the tamil movie viewers.
3. kalam kaalamaga-punnagai mannan,superb!
4. take it oorvasi,mukkaala-good graphics!
5. megam kottatum-enakkul oruvan, a taste of young kamal, dancing in his 'palapala' shirt.
srinath, u can make a separate dance video also.

Srinath & Vijay:
I have quite a few professionally made music videos of Tamil movie songs. Pyramid, Thomsun, Surya and other companies release extensive collections. The titles that I have include:
THE BEST OF ILAIYARAJA - Several Volumes
ISAIMALAR - Several Volumes
PUTHIYA RAAGANGAL - Several Volumes
ENRUM INIYAVAI - A classic collection of old
Black& White movie songs, including "Ponaal
Pogattum Poda..", "Vantha Naal Muthal..",etc.
I also have two videos consisting of more than 70 TFM songs by K.J. Yesudas, released by Pyramid. I have made a few tapes of my own, copying songs from movies as well as music tapes. You will need two VCRs and a lot of time.
BTW, all these commercial tapes were bought in North America. There may be stores in India that will custom-make your selections like they do with audio tapes.
Good Luck!
