I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

I would like to divert everyone's attention to a big joke of a news written by this shady site called Cinesouth.
Here is what they have written abt pongal releasea and collections:
Virumandi:
+ = Story based on Rural life, Kamal, Music.
- = Lot's of violence, Documentary Scenes, Irrelevant Climax.
Status of the Collection = More Prints More Profits.
MY Verdict: One of the biggest +s of the movie is the so realstic and fferent documentary scenes shot in 1:1 aspect ratio. The live soud a naturality of the scene defied regular masala way of filming. Especially the case when prisoner narayanan reveals atrocities and cameraman pretends camera is off to peikaman. But you see bizarre camera angles becos cameraman is moving with camera on in hand and holding it verticaly down.
Engle Anna:
+ = Comedy.
- = Story.
Status of Collection = Good Collection among B & C Class.
MY Verdict: This one is awesome. I just watched engall anna yesterday and trustme, not single line in that movie even evoked a smirk from my mouth. The script was infused with predictable anna sentiments and the movie was obviously horrrrrible!!!!!!!!!!
Pudhukottaiyilirunthu Saravanan :
+ = Yuvan Shankar’s music, Hot cake Dhanush.
- = Improper Screenplay, Irrational scenes.
Status of Collection = As the film has been distributed at a low cost there isn’t much of a loss.
MY Verdict: hahahah being a BIG ysr fan myself I considered this as one of his worst albums. Such an album has made these bone-heads think that the movie survives on it. What else can I say guys. Stupidity at its colllosal proprotions!
Comments welcome. sorry for digression

i just saw virumandi, and i have to say it's the worst noncomedy kamal film i've seen in a very long time (nothing can beat, in how bad it is, panchatantiram, though). and the worst part is -- there's a decent concept here (rashomon, antha naal, boomtown, pick your influence) but kamal has completely spoiled the concept (and this is coming from a kamal haasan fan, too).
story -- the 1st half is interesting and different, but very flawed. kamal's inflated ego and self-worship should have been toned down to concentrate on the story. but other than that, seeing the same incident through two different eyes was very interesting. unfortunately, kamal rans out of even that sarakku by intermission and the second half is a masala-filled too-drawn-out pain in the butt. i was sitting cringing waiting for the movie to end, but no -- first you have to see kamal making out with abhirami repeatedly, then hacking people up violently, then going to jail, then hacking people up violently and becoming a hero. waste of a second half.
direction -- for anyone expecting as great direction as "Hey Ram" had, you're in for a let-down. The direction is shoddy, and the entire crew (from editor to cameraman to Kamal himself) seem uncomfortable with the digital technology they are using. As a digital filmmaker myself, I could tell the very elementary mistakes they were making. Kamal also shows no subtlety in his direction. the violence -- while extremely over the top, graphic, and realistic -- is also unnecessary. for a concept with such subtle shades, one would expect a more restrained storytelling style.
acting -- the best part of the movie is the acting, but surprise, not from kamal! for the first time in history, i can say i was not impressed by kamal's immeasurable acting skill. why he seems to emote just right when talking to rohini, he overacts in the flashback and the jail-fight. kamal? overacting? never, you might say. but he was. in addition, he's about twenty years too old for the part (though the stunts he can do at that age are amazing), and you can clearly see his face is catching up to his age. he looks fat and unattractive throughout. so whose acting was i so impressed with? abhirami! christ, she was a revelation, she was so good. pasupathy! he stole every scene from kamal right out from under him. rohini and napoleon do pretty good jobs, but their characters are 'vethu' weights, anyway. nasser has a laughably miniscule role.
i'm not saying the film is a total disappointment. it has its moments (the bull-fights kept me at the edge of my seat until kamal entered the scene with over-obvious wires latched onto his back), abhirami sizzles in every scene she's in, and so it's about a 2 / 4. but that's a big disappointment from a kamal film, and the two points seem to come despite kamal's best efforts rather than because of them.
sorry for rambling on so long, but those are my thoughts. oh yes, one more thing:
theme -- theme was the best part of "mahanathi," "devar magan," "kurudhippunal," "hey ram," etc. in that the dialogue spoke to it, and the themes were subtle and brilliantly spoken. "virumaandi"'s theme (being against the death penalty) is muddled, over-obvious, and doesn't even logically work in the confines of the movie. am i really supposed to be against the death penalty at the end of the movie? virumaandi killed so many people! i'm supposed to be upset they were going to kill him? and even if he doesn't deserve it, doesn't kovala thevar? isn't that why his fate was so graphic (he gets stabbed, shot, and speared so he falls of a building). in fact, after showing so many murders (and justifying so many of them), kamal makes an about-face and says that murder is wrong. come on now. the movie made me for the death penalty, if anything else.
so. don't see it in the theater. wait for thiruttu vcd, if you're a kamal fan, and if you're not, skip it and don't worry about it. it's a movie that's way too long, and ilukkus in a vala-vala way (the "onnai vida" song lasts ten minutes or so, I think). whatever name virumaandi could have been released under, santhiyar or whatever, the movie is still a massive disappointment.

DEI KENNA KABOTHIGALLA (those who have been pointing out about Kamal's fair skin)..
have u guys ever wondered who is his mother?
I mean...his father could have married to a fair skinned lady. As a matter of the fact, his father himself would have been fair..no harm right?...then being fair is ok...
Kamal's Appatha is fair in that movie, unless it's Ganthimathi acts his Appatha and Kamal is fair...then there's some arguing point....
please....use ur kidney..

I thought the biggest mistake of the movie was enough reasons weren't given why Capital punishment must be abolished.
Thats a half cooked deal!

in fact, after showing so many murders (and justifying so many of them), kamal makes an about-face and says that murder is wrong. come on now.
That is Rohini's point of view, tit for tat does make things worse, but again as a doctorate in Civil law she must have cited facts why Capital punishment should be banned, if its banned in 85 countries - doesn't make any sense we should abandon CP.
Kamal says if given a chance he would like to live as a good civilian, i dont think he ever justified his gore acts.

subash,
digital filmaking evening class poneengala?:))
as for u coming out with more support to capital punishment, did you really feel that capital punishment is what is going to stop the people depicted from giving up the culture of violence? the hindu review is more sensitive..also reminds me of the dialogue in thevar magan where shivaji says " avan medhuvathan varuvaen"..
hmm..

While Virumandi versus other actors' styles have been exploited fully to the merriment of everyone concerned, why not anyone have attempted
"Virumandi - G.Rajender style" ?
I am not good at this, I request someone to add a lighter sense to this serious topic.

My Dear Subash
While I don't have much to argue against you for the topic-wise criticism ,Virumandi cannot be branded as " worst noncomedy kamal film" by any chance. Of course, it cannot be compared with "Hey Ram". As you have rightly pointed out inspite of brandishing the movie as a treatise against Death-penalty - there is nothing in the movie to assert this point except for Angela Kathamuthu to mouth a few words - that too most unconvincingly!
But touch your heart did any other movie in the recent past disturbed you (+/-) this much ?

A new dimension!
==================
While I was typing the above comments, a friend from Madurai asked me what is this forum about. I explained him and said that it is titled
"SAW VIRUMANDI"
He commented "Sir! It has been rightly captioned. Saw also means "rambum" and since the movie is "aruvai" the forum is titled " SAW Virumandi!"
But I do not subscribe to his views.

"SAW" can also be read as "DIE" in tamil...
DIE VIRUMANDI!
hehehehe
