When it comes to songs, Sridhar never disappoints (oh! Manju is an exception). Whatever be the theme or whoever the MD was he always made sure that they had good songs. When he directed MGR in Urimaikkural he had to include a handful of Typical-MGR songs but still managed 2 good melodies (vizhiyae kadhaiyezhudhu and Kalyana vaLaiosai) thanks to KVM. Some of the MDs he worked with are;

1. A M Rajah - (Kalyana Parisu, ThEn nilavu)
2. MSV (Nenjil ore alayam, Kadhalikka neramillai,
Nenjam marappadhillai, Policekaran magaL,
kalaikkoil + some more. Some of these
include TKR in them)
3. Chalapathi Rao (meenda sorgam - not sure)
4. KVM - Urimaikkural
5. IR - Ilamai O, Azhagae unnai.., Thendralae
ennaith thodu, Ninaivellam Nitya.

Ravy:

Some of my observations (with input from my parents) on Director Sridhar:
1. Targeted the younger audiences more, relative to his contemporaries, by focusing more on romance-related plots.
2. Has directed some real tear-jerkers like policekaaran magaL & nenjil oar aalayam, and also some unforgettable comedy classics like kaadhalikka naeramillai & uththaravindri uLLae vaa.
3. Belongs to that special class of directors who excel in great teamwork with the lyricist and MD's, leading to great songs which serve to enhance the mood & drama of the situation thru a blend of meaningful lyrics and good music (with some exceptions).
4. As you pointed out, has worked with a wide range of MD's (yes, T.Chalapathi Rao is the MD for meeNda Sorgam.)
5. Always steered away from the traditional in storylines & direction, introduced new talent in acting(Jayalalitha, Ravichandran, Kanchana, Srikanth, Nirmala, Moorthy), and used PBS/KJJ/SJ more for playback singing for the softer, romantic numbers.

veNNira aadai
This movie saw the acting debut of Jayalalitha, Srikanth, Nirmala, Moorthy and Asha. Lyricist: Kannadhasan. Music: MSV-TKR

Storyline:
The main characters are psychiatrist Chandru (Srikanth), his girlfriend Geetha (Nirmala) and his patient Shobha (Jayalalitha). 15-year-old Shobha becomes a mental patient when she sees her husband die in a car accident two hours after their wedding. She is placed under Chandru's care 2 years after the incident, and returns to normal, thanks to his genius. She promptly falls in love with him. Chandru is aware of this, but does not say anything for fear of upsetting her delicate mental balance. Shobha's parents want Chandru to get married to their daughter, but he declines since he does not wish to desert Geetha who is relying on him, Shobha discovers he is in love with Geetha, and helps Chandru & Geetha get married by overcoming Geetha's parents' objections. On Chandru's wedding day, she wears a widow's conventional veNNira aadai, NOT because knows she she is a widow by convention BUT because the person in her heart cannot be hers anymore.
I was too young to watch this movie when it was released, but ever since I watched this movie for the first time a few years back I've always wondered how the movie audience of the late 60's(?) reacted to the strong dialogue and non-traditional symbolic behavior in the last scene.

Ravy 'urimaikkural'is by MSV and not KVM.sridhar-KVM combinationle padam vandhadhaannun theriyalai.

Kanchana i happended to watch venniradai during my last trip to india. A nice film but i couldnt agree with the climax. And according to my mother the film was not a hit bcoz of the climax. Neengal oru azhagaana paadalai vittu vitteergal kanchana

Ramki:

Interesting comment on the veNNira aadai ending. Note that the movie does not advocate that ending--all the other characters, including her traditional parents, the hero and the rest of the world feel she should go on with her life. She clearly states it's her personal choice.

Now, why does the hero become a priest in Sumaithaangi? I haven't watched this movie at all, but feel that there is some similarity between the endings of veNNira aadai and Sumaithaangi.
Sridhar did specialize in tragic/shocking endings in several of his movies....

Kanchana & Ramki:

Thanks for reminding about veNNiRa aadai and
sumai thaangi. Thamizh audience is quite
unpredictable. When kalyaaNap parisu can
be such a big hit, I don't understand why v. aadai
can't be! Actually I think the ending in v. aadai
is quite natural.

Sridhar typically alternated between serious and
light themes very nicely, to keep all kinds of
audience captivated. Usually he did in pairs:

kalyaaNap parisu & thEn nilavu
nenjil Or aalayam & nenjam maRappadhillai
veNNiRa aadai & kaadhalikka nEramillai
avaLukkendru Or manam & u.uLLE vaa

His command over the audience ended in 1971 with
u. uLLE vaa. Then alaigaL (1973),
vaira nenjam (1975) and O Manju (1976)
were rejected by the audience. So, what did he do?
Switched to MGR! He did urimai kural
and meenava naNban (can someone say whether
Sridhar directed the MGR movie, navarathnam?
the MD was Kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathan, I think.)
Although these and some later ones such as
iLamai O were hits, I think the last movie
with the real Sridhar touch was u.uLLE vaa.

Two movies not mentioned above:

thandhuvittEn ennai
aalaya dheepam

are also by Sridhar.

and the depth of AMR's singing give a bramhaaNdamaana feeling. The audience get
choked with emotion and sadness hearing the song
and seeing the picturization. If you haven't seen
the movie, you have to see it to personally feel
this. Typically, I am told, that many who come out
of the theatre after this song curse Sridhar in
all kinds of abusive language for having made them
cry; more, to carry a heavy heart for several more
days!!

pagalavan another good song in Mohana punnagai'kalyaanam kutcheriyaam ponnunjalaam poomaalaiyaam jo jo jongricho kalyaaniyil aaradhanai kanneeril aalapanai'.One of the worst film of Sridhars. There were 3 heroines Jayabharathi,anuradha(yes adhae anuradha dhan)and one more(could be sripriya).

'Kaatrinile varum geetham 'was pathetic too.Include 'soundaryamae varuga varuga'too:)

Another Sridhar movie with IR was 'nAnum oru thozilALi'. *ing Kamal & Ambika. It was a horrible masAlA garnished with around 10 lovely songs. But because of the miserable failure of the movie, songs went unnoticed.

3) Ayiraththil nI oruththan - OK solo - SJ
4) pattup pUvE - Fast beautiful song - SPB with 100% enthu

6) nAn pUveduththu - 'mukkal' duet - SJ, SPB (who else)
7) oru nilavu nadanthu - Very fast duet - SJ, SPB

I may have missed a few songs. Not much melody in any of the songs. But very enthusiastic ones.

Was 'oru Odai nathiyAgirathu' also by Sridhar? It had at least 2 GREAT songs - 'thalaiyaik kuniyum thAmaraiyE' and 'thenRal ennai muththamittathu'.

all of u have forgotten thendrale ennai thodu,one of the greatest musicasl hits of raaja.the songs especially 'thendrale ennai thodu" set in raaga hamsanaadham are very pleasent to hear and retain their freshness even after a decade.

Sridhar imported Anand Shankar for one of his late films. Does anyone remember the movie ? There was also another Sridhar movie - Sir I Love You *ing Sivakumar, Ranjani. Who was the MD for this ? Anand Shankar ?

Pagalavan 'kaatrininile varum geetham 'was by Sridhar(This was kavithas second film with him-he introduced her in oh manju)

PG-'sir I love u'was directed by Rangaraj and ilaiyaraja was the MD

What about the classic songs from Ennai Thandu
Vitten? Muthamma Muthamma was a very nice song which highlighted Arun Mozhi's Voice.
The movie was a total flop.

Oo Poomalai from Iniya Ooravi Poothathu..

Also the unforgettable song
"Thalayai Kuniyum Thamaraiye!" from
Oru Oodai Nadiyagirathu.

Has sridhar given up making movies?
He had a great rapport with IR.

Since this was on your list of Sridhar movies to review (in the TMS thread), I'll go ahead and talk about it.

meeNda sorgam
Lyricists: Kannadhasan, Subbu Aarumugam, P.S.Gopalakrishnan.
Music: T.Chalapathi Rao

Storyline:
The main characters are Shekar (Gemini Ganesan), Nirmala (Padmini) and Kumarayya (S.V.Sahasranamam). Shekar takes an interest in the welfare of recently orphaned Nirmala, and introduces her to Bharata Natyam guru Kumarayya. She learns & excels in Bharata Natyam, but also falls in love with Shekar who thinks she should devote herself to the dance exclusively. He gets married to someone else, he is unhappy, the wife is unhappy and Nirmala is also unhappy. Finally, the wife commits suicide, and Shekar & Nirmala get together.

This is a movie which belongs to my parents' generation(50's) and I've heard them say great things about it. But when I watched it a few years back for the first time, I thought it was too slow and contrived. Also, Sridhar is not consistent: at one point Shekar says he is attracted to Nirmala but her talent should belong to the whole world and not just to him; at another point, Shekar says he is only in love with her talent and not her. ???!! And, somehow, the wife is painted in a bad light as an arrogant lady because she challenges her husband re his feelings for Nirmala. ??!! Anyhow, five out of the seven songs are great with good picturization.

MLV/Seerkaazhi. Sung for S.V.Sahasranamam and the nattuvaangam lady, for a formal Bharata Natyam recital by Padmini. One of my favorite MLV movie songs.

thuyilaadha peNN ondru kaNdaen
AMR/PS. Sung for Gemini & Padmini, this is a dream by Nirmala.

kalaiyae en vaazhkayin dhisai maatrinaai
AMR/PS humming. Sung for Gemini. Shekar takes a casual walk around the gardens and Nirmala dances along with him.

kalaiyae en vaazhkayin (pathos)
PS. Sung for Padmini. Nirmala dances based on Kumarayya's request, to make a very ill Shekar feel better. Both Nirmala & Shekar recall the happier days when this song was sung.

mana naattiya maedayil aadinaen
PS/few lines by AMR. Sung for Padmini & Gemini. The extremely depressed Nirmala & Shekar ask themselves which direction their respective lives are headed.
