What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed?

What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?

There is another song that comes to my mind, when u think of the greatest of IR's songs...it is "sangeedha jaadhi mullai" ...If carnatic music can sound "militant", this is the song...the fury & anguish weaved into this tune is unmatched till date...

And hats off to the unbelievable rendition by one & only SPB...you may never get another song in this genre...

we can only talk of current favorites, can't we? there is no single song that will stay as THE favorite for more than a week.

my current favorite:
pothi vecha malliga mottu.
lots of great moments in the song.
listen to the gorgeous violin, flute, piano, synth(?) intro. Many times, I rewind to listen to just the intro again & again.
the tabla & SJ start and at the end of the Pallavi, SPB interjects with his "Aahaa" & "Mmhmmm". deadly!
Then he sings the pallavi and stylishly ends it with "romba Naalaanadhey" appadiye pullarikkum.
after the first charanam, the genius in IR uses claps & guitar percussion. awesome!!
The violin ensemble bit in the second interlude that plays the main theme. rewind again.

what a song!

madhani madhani, kozhunda kozhunda is perhaps the best steamy IR song ;---) Anyway, the melody in the song cannot go underappreciated. a perfectly melodious song

WHen SPB says

Aasai theera pEsa vEndum varava varava

in the song Kanmani nee vara kaathirundhEn, it transports one to a different world.

When SPB says

Kodaikaanal kurinji malarin jaa-aa-aa-dhi

in the song kaathodu poo urasa, poova vand-urasa, the feeling is terrific (can't explain it!)

When SPB says

Kaakkai chiragilE naaLum
kavidhai nooru kooravaa
paasam veiththa paal nilavai
kayil naanum Endhava
Maaman ...

it somehow allows sadness to permeate.

When someone (don't know the singer) sings

Unnai thEdi vennila
vaanil engum oorvalam pogudho

it brings to the listener's attention the man's yearning for his beloved.

The melody in

Enna solli paaduvadho
Enna vaarthai pesuvadho (?)

is entirely gripping.

Thendral vandhu theendhum podhu is a very melodious number I feel that is one of the best of his compositions.
Also inji idduppazhaga.It was lifted bu Anu Bhai
for Viraasat and after improvising it said that it was the best tune he!!! has composed

His latest movie is always Anu Malik's greatest music! He said his best was in some movie that released before Yaadein. Then he said Yaadein was his best. Now he says another upcoming movie (with Ranjit Barot doing something) is his best. Inji iduppazhagi is a lovely song by maestro.

There are many songs of IR which feel more pleasant every next time you listen. Many, indeed. All such songs are his best.

If you ask a person who has to stay on earth, he will say the moon is as far as the stars.. To most IR's fans, this is the situation.. All songs are great!! At least many.

Please do not pollute this thread by referring to a cheap hack like Anu Malik. The man is a disgrace to the rich legacy left behind by his father Sardar Malik - composer of that all time great - "Saaranga teri yaad mein..." by Mukesh in the movie Saaranga.

How I agree with you? Sardar Mallick was such a level-headed person and above all a wonderful music director who did not get his due because HFM was lucky to have so many talented, dedicated MDs. How he gave birth to such an arrogant son who is such a mediocre MD, is a mystery!

there is a very good melody in payanangal mudivathillai.
maniosai kettu ezhundhaen.....an excellent composition of rajasir using janakiamma and spb.
similarly there is a melody in mella thirantahthu kadhavu..thedum kann paarvai...using the evergreen melody makers janakiamma and spb!

in the song paadavandhadhor gaanam whenever i listen to Yesudas singing 'raajamaalai thozh serum' in the 1st saranam, my heart stops for a moment and steers off for a clear flight in air.

can anybody explain why does this happen[technically - in musical terms] and does anybody had similar feeling.

Impressed to see the variety in opinions here. Probably someone among 6 billion in this world could say something like 'Enge En Kaathali' or 'Sexy Bomb' is the best song that IR has ever composed. I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually said that (Could be someone in Argentina, for all we know!). :-)))

purv, are you trying to say that people here do not have appropriate musical tastes and that they are picking some junk songs of IR and calling that as great ??? Or are you saying that IR has never composed any good song.

What i like in IR music is the blend of violin into the music. take for example in Devar magan pootri paadaadi poonay.. in that song after palavi there will be a violin bit with a lower base and a supportive upper string one... he is really mastered the art of mixing melody at right propotion....
