Now there are several songs of IR's that have wonderful guitar interludes and leads...
I am particularly interested in his use of the acoustic/box guitar...... Like "Ilaiya Nila" for instance or "Nallam vaazha" in Marupadiyum...

How about vaan engum thanga veeN meengaL vizhiyimai mooda from Moondraam Pirai? guitar preludes & interludes.
IR's classic orae naaL unai naan from iLamai oonjalaadugiradhu has a small guitar prelude--sounds beautiful but don't think it's an acoustic guitar.

Kanchana:
That piece from "ore naal" is indeed an acoustic guitar...
Thats the genius of that chap...Such a small piece and yet you cannot think of that song without it!
Yes,Moondram Pirai saw a lot of guitar stuff, especially in 'poonkatru" but that was predominantly a bass guitar.
What about the rhythm he uses with those ac/guitars?
Songs in Paneer Pushpangal and Kozhi Koovuthu.....
Know them?

Kitcha:
even tho I appreciate IR's "mann vaasanai" songs, when IR started out I was fascinated by his use of any guitar in his songs since I was a teenager who was into all kinds of world music then.
orae naaL is still my favorite because of that one few-sec guitar piece. the bass guitar song in Moondram Pirai I mentioned & like is the group picnic song with the chorus vaan engilum DeepavaLi, naam paaduvoam Geetanjali.
Also, the movie Payanangal Mudivadhillai which features iLaya nilaa also has a slower song thoagai iLa mayil aadi varugudhu vaanil mazhai varumoa which also guitar interludes.
Would like to see what the others come up with. Did IR use the guitar much in his later-day songs compared to his late 70's--early 80's?

Kanchana:
Sadly enough he seems to have forgotten that wonderful instrument....
I had read this article about Jayachandran in Malayala Manorama, where he talks about his early days in this field. He says how close he was to Raja(as he calls him) and how Raja was a great guitarist. It seems when they used to meet during IR's pre-Annakili days,Raja always had the guitar within reach and he used to take it out immediately and tell him.."Jayan sing something,I'll play the guitar" and they used to carry this on right into the night!
Man,I would have given anything to be with the two
those nights.....!

"En iniya Pon nilavae, " sung by Yesudoss.
The first interlude even today when I recollect that song haunts my mind.

One more, don't know the movie, song sung by SPB/SJ for Suhasini/Pradaap(?) as they jog along.
paruvamae pudhiya paadal paadu.
While the guitar interlude is good, the sound effects for the running shoes are not correct.

enakku andha paattum padamum konjamthaan gnabagam irukku. I think there is a guitar interlude between the pallavi which goes paruvamae pudhiya paadal paadu, iLamayin poondhendral raagam and the anupallavi which starts out with poondhottathil...hoi...kaadhal kaNNamma. Unfortunately, I don't have a tape of this song and recalling from memory, so I can't check the facts. :)

Ravi:
I think Kanchana is correct...Thers a guitar piece which comes just before that great violin piece...but that violin is so good thats its not surprising you forgot this guitar....
The rhythm I talked about, was with respect to 2 great songs
1. Poove ilaiye poove Kozhi Koovuthu
2. Kodai kaale kaatre paneer pushpangal
What about the song Allithantha bhoomi from Kazhugu(?)...The song has a great intro by Malaysia Vasu and the guitar strumming along beautifully in the background...Great stuff.
Talking about the bass guitar...the song "valai osai" from Satya has a a catchy bass piece right through the song.It sounds more like the beat to the song...

Listen to IR's guitar usage in a telugu movie - Prema (*ing Venkatesh and Revathy). This movie has great songs which use guitar (Venkatesh in the movie is a guitar player). This movie was dubbed in Tamil as Anbu Chinnam. I have the original Telugu album.

reg the sound of the shoes in the song paruvamE, its not the question of the sound of the shoes. The music is set to maintain a tempo for two joggers and that should match their work on the screen!! How about the harmonium he uses in the middle? From the most sophisticated music to the most rustic, in one stroke!!The SONG!!
What about the EnnullE song from Valli? Great guitar bg score that is oft repeated in the movie itself. OH great song!!
Idhu oru pon maalai from nizhalgal begins with beautiful guitar piece!
How about the bass and acoustic guitar bits all thro Uravenum another great song from the same movie!!
and more..

If you saw closely,"i.nila" was among the songs I mentioned in my first posting..:-)
Who could ever forget THE song?
The song "enna satham intha neram" also has wonderful guitar interludes......
If you noticed you would see that when the lines"vizhigal mutham...." are sung ,there is only the guitar in the background and it blends perfectly with the mood of the song.....Genius!!!
The song "maegam kottatum"(Ennakul Oruvan) also has a great mix of guitar pieces...When the first lines are sung..there is this bass guitar going along beautifully...and the first BGM has an excellent lead piece....!!

pOngkappaa, allaa pattaiyum list paNNittu, 'naanE naanaa' miss paNNitteengkaLE!! The second interlude has terrific guitar.
I am reminded of an incident in Vibes'96. (Vibes is the annual cultural festival at IISc). There was a group playing several Western, Hindi and Tamil songs. Finally they played their own composition where a guy literally freaked out on his electric guitar. He simulated mirunthangkam, yes miruthangal, on an electric guitar. The audience was spellbound for few minutes.
Later, the organisers, manily Tamil guys asked him to play 'iLayanilaa'. He played it just for the requests' sake. But he was not able to manage even 50% of the original one.
After the program, I met him at the back stage and asked him, 'Elec. gitaarle kiLapparenga, aanaa iLayanilaa En sariyaa vaasikkalai?'
The guy said, ' athu RajavE vaasichchathu. avarai maaththiri nammaalE vaasikka mudiyumaa?'
Is it true that IR played the guitar for iLayanilaa?

How about the second interlude of " Maalaiyil yaaro manadhodu pesa " from "CHATRIYAN" - the guitar caarries the song majestically.
THe prelude of "Pon malai Pozhudhu" from " Nizhalgal" is also a guitar piece, I think.
All the songs of " ANANDHA KUMMI" ,though very folkish in nature, had wonderful usage of bass guitar.
"Thulli yezhundhadhu paattu" from " Geethanjali " had great guitar preludes and interludes.
" Rojaa ondru ullangaiyil poothhadhu " from " O, Maanae maanae" a Mohan - Urvashi starrer was a forgotten great song with guitar holding centrestage. Especially, the theme tune for that song is played only with the guitar.

Hai everybody !!! I have a correlation to make.
have you noticed that most of IR's songs that start with a guitar piece are marvelous. Probably his relationship with guitar is special for that his the first western instrument he learnt under master Dhanraj. ( IR runs a trust in his name now).
