I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I guess there has been only one female singer in all of North India in more than 50 years. May be another one comes close. And everybody else is way way way behind these two. No disrespect to the sisters' talent. But I can't believe that they would publish fan letters as articles.

Hello Raj:
Bhimsen Joshi has an epic album with Lataji - Ram Shyam Gun Gaan.
Recently I saw on the net an album of Bhimsen Joshi with VJ with music by Ravi Shankar. It contains Meera Bhajans. I dont know whether the cassette is just a compilation of old songs or they are new ones.

So what if she is not in Nandha. She is in Neela. Thank you Vijayabhaskar.

The Neela songs by Vani Jairam are truly amazing. Once a class act, always a class act!
It is great to have Vani back in film music...I hope this signifies a return to quality in film music. Most film music these days (and a few new wannabe singers as well)is so forgetable. An album like Neela reminds you what film music ought to be - and how much one has really missed that magic....
By the way - has anyone heard of her independently released album - Sawan ke Geet? If you have any info regarding this album please post it here. I am told it is simply superb. I'd love to have a copy! Help!!

I really love these 2 songs by VJ:
1)Meghame meghame
2)Yaarathu sollamal..........
They are ghazal-like melodies composed by Shankar Ganesh.
However - they are COPIED tunes - copied from Jagjit Singh's ghazal tunes. And uptill now I thought only North Indian MDs copied :-)
Anyway this does not alter the fact that Vani has done a beautiful job in both.So soothing though I dont understand the lyrics.
Actually a few days ago I heard a Hindi song from the 60s with a tune very similar to VJ's famous masterpiece "malligai en mannan...".

Neel and Naaz:
In Neela, VJ has imitated an old lady (or a lady who has lost her voice) PERFECTLY!!
Vijayabhaskar is one of the MDs who has had a fruitful association with VJ, right? He too seems to be a genius. The songs he has given her are real beauties.
Neel, we already discussed "Happiest Moment". Another one is "Bhaava vemba hoovu arali" for a Kannada film "Upaasna". Its classical based.
Now a site with a few Oriya songs by VJ.
http://mahanadi.com/taranga/songselect.asp?cat=02
Select both "vani Jayaram" and "bani jayaram","bani jairam" and "vani jairam" in the "artists" combo box. Listen to "charan kamal bandhe" and "megha barasil tupuru tupuru". Very well sung, really!

Hi AVR,
Many thanks for the recommendations. Have you heard Vani Jairam's Gita Govindam (based on the Jayadeva classic) with Phakawaj accompaniment by Kelucharan Mahapatra? It is simply divine. It was released by Vani's own music company VJ Cassettes. Another good album with the same label is Vani's Holi Songs with Pt. Birju Maharaj. The song that is mindblowing in this album is "Jage ho khain rain arey haan..." Get your hands on these two albums (if you haven't already) rightaway...And listen to them after dark...when all is quiet around you...they will transport you to a realm of peace and joy!
Naaz
PS: Any info on Sawan Ke Geet? Please let me know.

Hi AVR,
I listened to Charana Kamal Bandhe - guess what - it is sung by S.Janaki (although the song is credited to VJ in the site). Right from the alaap it was obvious that it was SJ not VJ! A bit of a let down....

NAAZ AHMED:
For the past FOUR months, I have been hunting out for her albums with Kelucharan Mahapatra and Birju Maharaj. Do u have a link or an mp3 file of these? In Pune, where I live, nobody knows about these albums. Anyway, who cares for such things when pop albums flood the market :-)
Actually I have a huge collection of her albums with Raghunath Seth, frankly I did not like them very much. Somehow the Vani Jayaram of Apoorva Raagangal,Shankarabharanam,Swathikiranam seems much superior. All IMHO of course.
Also, I still dont feel that Charana Kamal Bandhe was sung by SJ. I somehow feel that it is VJ. I dont know why.
Also do u have a link to "Mangala Kannagi" ?

Another song by VJ that I just cant get enough of is Aanathi Neeyara from Swathikiranam. She won the National award for this.
Besides admiring Vani, we cant help admiring the genius of the composer KV Mahadevan. What a song!! All the other songs are a beauty - hear "konda konallo loyallo". Ever heard guitar pieces in a folkish tune!! GREAT!!

Hi AVR,
I don't believe the Mahapatra-Maharaj songs by Vani are available on MP3 format. I don't think they are anywhere on the net. You have to get the albums from a music store. I do have both the albums with me....but I live in North America - a bit of a ways from amchi Pune?

"amchi Pune" - do u know Marathi or something? :-)
Just curious.
Well Vani Jayaram has sung a few songs in Marathi too, u know. There is one with Kumar Gandharva - this would easily be her sweetest song ever.

Hi AVR,
I have two Marathi Albums by Vani Jairam (that's the way she spells her name - I have an autographed album from her). The Marathi songs are fine examples of her fluency and versatility - she sings some Lavnis and some traditional Vittala bhajans on the both the albums.
I am orniginally from Mumbai - and I have family in Pune as well. My Marathi is good (or bad, more likely) enough to order Pav Bhaji at the roadside Dhabas at Poolgate!
Check out Vani's Malayalam song from the film Ganam - the song is titled : Karuna Cheiva. Out of this World! Believe Me!

Mr avr are you from karnataka, if not how do you know about VJ's 'Happiest movement' and 'Bhavavemba Hoovu' songs, these too songs are my fav too. But did you heard other songs of "Upasane" those songs are greater than these two. All those classical No's goes to SJ. The song Bharata Bhooshira Mandira(two versions Happy and Sad both sung by SJ) Aacharavillada Naalige(Saint purandara dasaru) also beautifully sung by her. Those songs sung by VJ is really good ones but those are not popular as much as these two songs.

Hi Neel,
thanks for putting up the link to Karuna Cheiva. It was good to hear that song once again after a long time. Too bad the real audio version of the song (perhaps it is the orignial itself) is not a stereo recording.
All said, the song still works its magic!
Do you know any site which has the VJ-Yesudas duet "Ullagam Muzhudhum Pazhaiya Ratiri, Unnakkum Enakkum pudhiya ratiri..." from the film Nooravathu Naal?
There is another haunting solo from the same film "Urughudhe Idhayame Arugile Va Va". I have not found a site that has these two numbers.
While I'm at it: Do you know where I can locate another VJ-KJ duet from Rajarishi "Maan Kanden Maan Kanden" and a solo from Balanagamma "Sangeetham En Dhegamandro"
You seem to know these things....I am just hoping I strike it lucky by asking you!
Thanks,
Naaz

Meera:
I am a Maharshtrian, not a Kannadiga.
How do I still manage to listen to South Indian Music. Praise my open-mindedness :-) (Kidding only!)
Also, I have read ur posts on other threads. I know u are a DHCF-SJ. :-)
Naaz:
Yes the songs of Balanagamma are very nice. Here is a site where u will find hem, but they are just 1-1.5 minute audio clips, not whole songs.
