1. pachchai kiLigal thOLOdu... (Indian)
Mandolin piece in this song is just awesome. Kamals(both) bangra dance to the tune is out of the world! The drum beat reminds me of those days when I used to run behind the bullock-cart carrying 'upcoming new movie' adv posters and notices thrown at kids following the cart. Yes, the beat just resembles the same beat I used to hear following the cart as a kid.
2.Chinna Chinna Aasai... (Roja)
I like the interluding guitar(?) piece that is done many IR movies to sound like water flowing . It used to be common in 80's for depiction of village type stories/songs. ARR combines that here with sounds resembling breeze (those transverse waves like flow you see on those long grown grass!) and the combination sounds perfect for the depiction of village life. The flute interludes makes me feel I am actually present there on a crispy morning! (how about a filter coffee on your hand in a remote villate like that? woooooooooooooo...)
3.Pudhu veLLai mazhai ... (Roja)
The first song ever made me feel the resonance effect . Yes, the song keeps echoing in my ears and I get the best feeling when I play this in a closed , sound-proof aprtmnent. A truly acoustical feeling!

Unnikrishnan won the best singer of the year award with this song and it was his first song in tamil movie industry.
2) Angali Angali (Duet)
I love SPB and Chitra does wonders in this song. Just listening to the saxphone. It is great. It was also a long song, something like 8.30 min.
3) Neela karkerathu (Indra)
Lovely song .......The first song for Harini in the tamil movie industry. ARR said in some interview that of all the song that he had composed this was his favourite. I dont blame him.

Lankadas, My fellow Sri lankan compadre(I made this deduction from your name): Just for your information, "Ennavale" wasn't Unni's First TFM song, as far as I know, it was the song that brought him to fame......I heard that he'd sung for Deva before this and didn't make a hit....Can someone else confirm this please?

on: Thu Aug 27 13:26:05 EDT 1998
Geetha,
Unni Krishnan said himself in a Sun TV interview that "Ennavale" was the first song that he recorded in tamil. BTW, I'm also from Sri Lanka, I had no idea that you were a Sri Lankan, too.

Balaji and others-
I see that a lot of folks like "En Mel Vizhulanda" from May Madham,I remember when I saw it in Madras the first day the song seemed to bore the audience,so the theatre management decided to do some onsite editing and when I saw the movie again a couple of days later they had removed the song, they also truncated Shobha Shankar's divine vocalizings at the end of Margazhi Poove since it had elicited audience booing(which is a rather interesting sociological thing actually).
What raga is "En Mel.." based on,does anyone know? Also if its true that Rahman composed the tune after the lyrics(which may explain its non-catchy character, and I mean that as a compliment) I wonder what other songs Rahman has composed like this?

Sreeni: i read that rahman composed "narumugaiye"
from iruvar also after the lyrics was penned.
there we can distinctly feel the flow of the
lyrics. also, vairamuthu said that he wrote
the song for uyire describing the seven moods
of love and then rahman did the music for it.
which is quite puzzling as i thought that
rahman composed with hindi lyrics first and
vairamuthu was forced to "tamilize" it.
any more info on other similar songs by ARR?
