The whole of India got great welcome in the West after IR' Grand Symphony recording, 1993 changed the world's perception of India from Dark Cowherds, Jobless snake-charmers and Wizened Sitarists and poverty stricken scavengers TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL mind-bogglers NOT OF THIS universe. IR did that friends, not your Rahman or Norah Jones' father ;---) (due respect to Ravi Sankar)
"The Modern Civilized Masters of the World" such as represented by Webber began to realize that culture means not great parades and uniforms, but spiritual values and what comes out of that - great music, not-sooaked in vanity type traditions, etc... even if it means eating with your dirty fingers - what about that turmeric curry, pal not everyone is eating out of their hands across the globe. what about Yoga, Ayurveda taking thousands of years to be appreciated abroad? I think it was IR' summer of 1993 casual camping in Cochin and deft yet nonchalant cleaning up London with the RPO that revived this neo-Indophile age.
HEY, u can ask Rahman about that, in a straight talk and he must admit that it was IR, not Manirathnam (ayusu ezhuthiyachu) or Webber that did it. That is MY ENTHUSIASTICALLY HUMBLE YET VAIN OPINION (IMHYVO) ;---)

Please note, that was not anyway prejudiced or jaundiced acclamation, even today we are Dark cowherds, poverty ridden country, but we can handle that image as we are a mature society, a land with generous capacity to accomodate a billion people, a magnaminity you can't easily find in the rest of the globe. So, i am just saying in addition to old perception, abroad nations have this wonder about India' other wealth, such as music since projected by IR in 1993. the point is, little do people understand that classical Indian music has the seeds in it for creation of fantastic film songs. Dark Cowherds are harmless people, poverty is a most meaningful foundation for avoiding excesses and also for achieving valued success by overcoming challenges which rich countries people do not realize that by not looting other countries you can still prosper and not gifted with great white skin does not mean you cannot make music that defies perception.

Achievements of Pandit Ravishankar is great.
Please don't even put him in the category of IR.
IR is good but not great.
westerners are listening to MS subulaksmi's concerts in USA and Russia.
These guys broke the cultural hurdles not IR.
Even today people are willing to sponsor Padit Ravishankar and MS not IR.
IR is a man with so many excuses and high ego.

Jaya: IR is a man with so many excuses and high ego.
True Jaya. The main problem with IR's composition is that one first hearing itself you will understand that it was composed by a South Indian. The songs always have this sort of a rural touch. I think that is what resulted in his failure in hindi. And that is exactly where ARR stands out.
Neverthless I must admit IRs bgms are great.

Guess Me, your problem is IR's strength. If you can understand that, you will appreciate what originality and individuality mean when it comes to artistic creativity.

What a comment ?. Please be open. Not with your stuprid traditoanl theories.
Your Pandit RAvishankar and Subbulakshmi, if they come and perform , only selected audience can hear it. But with IR 's music , ppl for all kinds willl enjoy it.
Yeah in that aspect I should not compare Raishankar and Subbulakshmi , bcos thery arent even 10% of IR

Stop blabbering like this. Try to accept facts. What I said is 100% true.
Regarding IRs strength, he was strong back in the 80s and in early 90s. His fall started from 1992. IRs biggest mistake ever was his clash with Mani Ratnam while working in Thalapathy. That incident forced MR to search for a new composer for his next project and the rest is history.

jaya,
Though I don't subscribe to the theory that unless westerners appreciate a form of art the artist isn't great, it is a fact that many from the west who had an exposure to IR's music had great appreciation for that (Paul Mauriat is one example).
A personal experience here:
We invited my son's piano teacher & her family to our home for dinner a few weeks back. (White lady in her late 50's who is an expert pianist and who had played for years in religious gatherings, with her husband who does design work for auto advts for big 3 & their son). After the dinner, when she finished playing around with my son's electronic keyboard -much inferior to the wooden equipment at her home- I invited them to listen to some `Indian music'. I don't have a great collection of Raja with me now, only a few samples on a CD that could be played...(ennuyir nee thAnE, kaNmaNiyE kAdhal enbadhu, Germaniyin senthEn malarE...)...she was astounded and was full of praises for the music. She was very specific about her remarks, some of which were in musical terms which I could not quickly comprehend, especially about the rhythm, the flow and the arrangement. She was also appreciative of the melody -the theme- of the music.
The bottomline : getting exposed to the scores only can prompt one to appreciate / criticize.
With due regards to Pandit & MS, please do not compare `performers' with `composers'. And, don't rate the music of an artist based on how well he/she was marketed and publicised internationally. Don't confuse marketing with art...

eden,
MS (i dont know much about Pandit RS) is not just a performer -- she is indeed a composer.
Please do not use same yardstick of defining a composer as in Western Classical Music(WCM) to a Indian classical Music(ICM) composer.
