Last year I did a show on Ilayaraja for Deepavali. IT was so great a hit that the ASTRO Private TV Station is repeating on 9 NOvember at 4.00 pm Malaysian time. This is called RAJANNA RAJATHAAN- covering 25 years of Raja's music contribution. From Annakkili to Azhagi. A great hit. If you can, pls do catch it. You can post your comments on the show here, and I'll respond to them.
Thanks.

Hello Mr.Mani sekaran ,sir, and everyone in discussions in this thread! It is rather quite an an engrossing and nostalgic topics you have been pursuing all these days. In fact I had been lured to join your wonderful discussions in this thread!
Re: Janani Janani song I want to add a few more interesting lines. In the Prelude of the Song Raja will be using the First Hymn of Aadhi Sankara's Soundarya Lahari-
"SIVA SAKTHYA YUKTHOYATHIBHAVTHI SAKTHA PRABAVITHUM..
NA CHE DEVAM DHEVONNA KALUM KUCHALA SBANDHITHITHUM ABI...
ATHASVAAM AARADHYAAM HARIHARA VIRINCHATHI PIRABHI..
PRNANTHUM STHOTHUM VAA GATHAMAKRUTHA PUNYA PRABHAVATHI..."
THIS IS THE FIRST Verse of Aadhi Sankara in his Great SOUNDARYA LAHARI. In fact it is very difficult to make the pronounciations perfectly even for verbalutterances. But our IR had done the most difficult tasks unblemishingly and in the most perfect way in setting the rhyme into a melodious tune with due Bakthi Bhaavam and melting prelude that can not be done by even a classical singer so lightly.
Another point I want to impress is that apart from this Sankara's prelude, the entire lyric of the song had been penned by our Maestero himself!
A real landmark of his poetical genius as a Vakkeyakkaarar- a composer of both music and lyric simultaneously like Thiyagayyar like people!
Kudos to ILAYARAJA on this performance!

Mani Sir,
Nice song evoking devotional feelings. Thank you.
One day, four elderly women amongst my relatives (belonging to the TMS, Seergazhi era) happened to listen to this song when I was playing this at home, and they could not believe that the singer was IR. They liked the song very much and were visibly moved by the devotional content and the sincere and simple way it was rendered. That actually made me lke the song more:) They certainly felt something more that I could not. It was a nice feeling to see even the elders appreciate IR as a composer and a singer.
Like many other songs, I felt IR sang this (be it the track singing) more for his own satisfaction than anything else.

DR. SK.
Welcome to this healthy discussion thread.
Thank you for posting the lyrics for the prelude of Janani song. I still wonder how Raja could sing those lyrics with so much perfection and emotions. He must have been immersed into the ocean of spritual ecstacy.

All: I have heard that IR made just 1 mistake in pronounciation w.r.t song Janani Janani. It was in "shakthi peettamum nee sarva mokshamum nee". IR stressed on "T" while singing "PEETTAMUM". It was supposed to be "PEEDAMUM". Even though the word "Peetam" is correct, the exact word for the phrase was "PEEDAM" and not "PEETTAM". Can somebody throw light on this? Or this is just a rumour?

Peetam is perfect, Madhu. IR clearly pronounced. May be he gave more stress as "PeeTa(h)mum nee"
Manisekaran, the very first thread I see in this newtfmpage is this. Am really admire you way of writing and respecting other views. hats off.

SN,
Thank you. It is unfair for me to take all the credits. I am only a moderator. It is a team effort where we all have to congratulate each other.
I am also learning from the learned friends.
To put it into cine song language- PARIMAARUM NERATHIL PASIYARINEN- a song by Kannadasan in Poojaikku Vantha Malar.

Mani Sir, you remind me a "pazhamozhi". It is "eppadi vendum endraalum samailkalaam, aanal anbodu parimaara vendum - adhuvE suvai kootum". You are at your best as far as "RAJANNA RAJA THAAN" is concerned. All the best!

Film "Thaai Mookambikai" can be proud of another praiseworthy song "Isai Arasi ennaaLum ". IR has composed this song in a rare raagam called "Sallabam". SJ, PS, Rajeshwari necessarily in that order have given the listeners a great vocal darbar

"janani Janani" is a landmark song indeed that carries me to spiritual cum devotional plane. I did not know Raja had penned the lyrics. If it is so, then this must be his master piece

Folks:
Yesterday night it was my fate to see the video of "Ilaiya Nila Pozhighiradhe." Can't believe what the director did with the picturization. I'm amazed that the same guy who must have described the situation and setting to Raja and who was able to get that kind of a great song was completely at a loss to put it in to celluloid. Senthilv and BRBhakthan earlier talked about how the directors picturize the songs but here the "Payanangal Mudivathillai" director fully botched the song. What's with S.Ve.Sekar anyway? When the music directors get to see their best songs being killed like this (wringing the song until the visual jeevan is gone), they must feel really bad about it.
I also saw "Maanjolai Kilidhano". It was a comedy with Radhika and Sudhakar. Radhika's wardrobe, makeup and Sudhakar's step-cutting hair style and his eye-brow raising poses were quite horrifying. A great director like BR could've done better.

Shankar V, did you just see the song video or the whole film? I don't think that song was made as a MTV-kind of video but very situational and fitting...That's one of those rare songs that fit into the theme of the movie and not something pushed in / misfit like most of them in films, IMHO.

& manjolaikkili dhano is by BR only:-) Why do you say if had been by someone like BR, it would have been better...(or is it that your `could've' be replaced with `should've'?)

Raj,
You are referring to the credits as they appear on the vinyl records. The song "Kan Mai Enthum Vizhi Aada" was written by Kannadadasan originally for PACHAI VILAKKU (1964) But the song was not included in that movie. Mukta Seenivasan who liked Kannadasan's works lifted that unused song and utilised well in the Mukta Films Poojaikku Vantha Malar. Savithri and Gemini ganesan appeared on top of an artificially constructed KUTHU VILAKKU. She was fully drunk and almost fell down. This news was flashed in a Tamilnadu publication.
Such misleading cases are far too many in the vinyl records. I remember giving such a list long ago. As an example, the record for the song "Mayakkum Maalai Pozhuthe Nee Po Po" in Gulebagavali says the song is from Gulebagavali, and that music was by MSV/TKR. This is wrong. The song was composed by KVM for Koondukkili. Both are RR films. While it was not used in Koondukkili, it was used in Gulebagavali.
Again, the first song that AMR Raja sang in Tamil was composed by KVM, using a HIndi tune, for the film Kumari. "Azahiyaatha Kaathal Vaazhvil Anaiyaatha Jothiyaai." But do we remembeer this as the first song of AM Raja? We still claim that "Samsaram Samsaram" from the film SAMSARAM is the first song of AMR in Tamil. In actual fact the Kumari song was recorded first, but what was released first was of course Samsaram.
"Paadinaar Kavinyar Paadinaar" by TMS and Suseela was originally recorded for Nichaya Thamboolam. But it was missing there. It was used in Thenral Veesum.
The song Thendral Varum Seithi Varum by PS was recorded for the film paalum pazhamum, but never used in the film. Such cases are even far too many.
If you look at the record of Urimaikkural, you will notice that the song Vizhiye Kathai Ezhuthu is atrributed to Vaali. But it was by Kannadasan.
The MD for Maragatham is SM Subbiah Naidu. But the Chandra Babu song "Kunguma Poove" was by TG Lingappa.
The MD for the film SUBATHINAM is KVM. But the song by Balamurali Krishna and P. Suseela - Putham puthu Meni was by TG LIngappa.
So vinyl records do not convey the truth!
This is Ilayaraja thread. Let us come back to him.
Thanks for the querry.
Regards,
Manisekaran

Mmanisekaran, appappa enna oru assetive response with great data backing it? Great to read your explanation.
Mythila, adhu enna "necessarily in that order". Do u say SJ topped the 3? In my opinion, I think SJ could not control her voice after that lengthy and difficult alabana-humming. She ends with so much of nadukkam. When she returns to pallavi, it was very clear that this has happened. Am not degrading SJ's singing and I concur with you that SJ did a very good job. An immortal song of TFM (Sorry for the deviation).
