best wishes to bb and to this page. what an enjoyment this page has given for me and my friends all these days. wishing it long life.
madaithiranthu - BR & IR must have worked on this song during KallukuL eeram days as the second interlude of this song is used as a bgm in that movie. it comes when BR is relaxing by the mountain side listening to this interlude music in a taperecorder.

Another common factor in both the songs: the kitschy colors of their apparel- while we had become accustomed, and thus immune to seeing MGR in such garish glory, Chandrasekar was a rude shock!

Under Arasu badhilgaL (Kumudham), there was a kELvi.. "Padum podhu SPB-yin chinna sirippu patri". Arasu answered "andha kuLumaiyaana sirippu oru thani ragam..". Yes it was one of tools of SPB for his grand success. Just listen to "malar mEniyai konjam aNaithu". Within the word "mEniyai" there will be a chinna kulukkal sirippu... I think this song was picturised for MGR with Rajashree. At the end of the song, MGR dies accidentally or so (if am correct) and RS becomes paithiyam.
A great ever-youthful song :-)
Madai thirandhu... there is lot of aarbattam in singing, but its all a sheer waste when one look at Chandrasekar and his exaggerated reactions on the screen.
Congrats bb for the 400 milestone :-)

Friends,
I don't remember if I wrote this in the context of 'urimaikkural' sometime back. 'nERRu inRu naaLai' was famous for all the wrong reasons. MGR started ADMK around the time 'idhaya veeNai' was released. Subsequently, he had to drastically reduce his films per year because of his preoccupation with politics. The legendary U.Su.Vaa. was followed by a damp squib 'pattikkaattup ponnaiyaa'. The next film 'nERRu inRu naalai' had aroused ( a la 'Baabaa'!) a lot of expectations about a generous load of politics in it! ('karuththuk kurudargaLin ezhuththuk kaNaigaLai muRiyadikka varugiRaar types!!!) On a Thursday night, when the previous film (Chitramahaal's 'ungaL viruppam'?) was doing the night show, some people sprang up on the stage / screen and tore up the 'veLLihthirai'! This happened in quite a few places in TN! So the next day 'nERRu inRu naaLai' had to be released with a lot of police bandobast! In a week's time, all the hue and cry died down, along with the film.
Subsequently, 'urimaikkural' had a smooth opening, because of the storyline -that MGR, the younger brother, is all for a patchup, with a stubborn elder brother SV Sahasranaamam!
One more song in 'nERRu inRu naalai', (banned in AIR!!) is ' thambee, naan padichchEn kaanchiyilE nERRu...'

Vengayam & BB,
The write up was like EAS Prasana and Chandra bowling in tandem.( i know both of you would enjoy the comparison!).Anyways with SPB as the subject matter ,you would never fall short of adjectives ,never would you need to wait for the correct word for appreciation and to elaborate the bliss .
All the best and thanks for keeping us in touch with what we love dearly....the TFM.

BTW Netru indru had 2 KVM songs as well.
Nerungi Nerungi & Naan padithen Kaanjiyile Netru. But Visu's Paadum bothu and Angey varuvathu get a walkover.
For both NizhalgaL and Varumayin niram sigappu the story line was narrated by Vadivukarasi's brother (Arulazagan or something) to both KB and BR.Both promptly rejected the story to the author and chose to make their "originals".

bb and the rest, congrats on the 400...
it was interesting to see (and hear)...
ilayaraja sign as playback for chandrasekhar(prelude)
chandrasekhar direct ilayaraja
SPB as playback for ilayaraja
i guess this was the first time IR appeared on screen ??
isaikkenna isaigindra rasigargal raajiyam yenakke thaan...
9 years later...ennaku thaan thalaivargal, en rasigargal, avar virumbum varaiyil virunthu padaithiduvaen...from Karagattakaran...are there other instances where IR refers to his fans in his songs??
i also remember seeing manivannan's name on the credits for story and dialogues...he plays the role of a rickshaw puller in the movie...

bb & all involved :-) Congrats
Milestone a Big Yes !!, good times ahead.. surely
Madai Thirandhu - what can one say - this song will find a place in everyone's life, pure joy and optimism. How did IR and SBP bring this feel to the song, the violins and chorus wow!! I do remember some great visuals from the movie, the orchestra playing in the beach, the drug addict's bedroom with no ceiling, this movie is surely under-rated/forgotten. One of IR's creative output, in fact watching IR and Chandrasekhar in the movie left an odd feel .
Paadum podhu - great tune and SBP, who else can do justice to this song.

way to go bb... two great songs... 'madai thirandhu' is an amazing composition....I guess IR was in chandrasekar's shoes when composing this.. SPB/IR & not to forget Vaali (thanks again to raj) at their best...

Vengayam, that was a scoop!!!
"Nee ennenna sonnaalum" is another class song.
Music and photography were the only saving grace for Nizhalgal. It was highly pessimistic and Manivannan's was the lone, sane role.
Varumai was stark, pragmatic with a touch of satire

This is the song in which IR sings in the movie with SPB's voice. Is there any other combination like this.
- From: Udhaya (@ 65.136.67.226)
on: Thu Mar 11 12:18:31 EST 2004
If this thread were a being as I strongly believe it is, then from its POV both the songs make perfect sense.
"Naayagan" was IR's 400th. SOTD is the Naayagan of this DF. Let this thread go on to more excavations and discoveries to launch its own compilation series like MTV's, "Now That's What I Call Music!"

bb, congrats.
'pAdumpOthu' is memorable and sweet with short&sweet interludes and so is 'nee ennenna sonnAlum kavithai'(PMS/PS) . There is another good song in the movie 'innoru vAnam , innoru nilavu..' by TMS/PS.
I think 'thambi naan padichen' had lot of anti-government criticism. MGR/Manjula shaking head in the song 'ange varuvathu yaaro' (SPB/SJ) is hilarious , Vijay&Sneha mocked this kind of antics in a recent song.
'madaithiRanthu' was probably one the first few IR songs for which SPB exprerimented with unbridled voice modulations for IR.

Am I glad to be part of 400th SOTD celebrations? you bet I am !!!
Thx Saravanan,OISG,Mythila, T et al.
One point I forgot to mention - Chandrashekar uses the bow of the violin with his left hand in which case shouldn't the strings rearranged in the reverse fashion? Are there any left handed violins and vidhwans for that matter? can anybody throw some light on this matter.
I am surprised that nobody took that ARR bait? ARR fans intha pakkam varuvathilayya?

on: Thu Mar 11 22:43:31 EST 2004
vengayam: Generally, the dominant hand is used for bowing. For a southpaw it will be the left hand and the violin will be a mirror image of the right handed violin(eg: the chin rest will be moved to the other side and so on). They don't make left handed violins because most of the players are right handed. It is common practice to modify the right handed violin. Actually, there are books for left handed violinists!

Thanks Raj but in Nizhalgal Chandrasekhar probably used the regular violin! so we would get only noise & not notes!
