Friends!
Please write about the Thalattu songs in TFM in this thread. (Please revive from Archives if there is any old thread on this sub). This does not mean songs starting with the word `Thalattu'. It should be functional. My all time favourite is `Thenpandi cheemaiyile' from Nayakan. (IR)
Of course, ARR /Deva bashing is allowed as these two have not contributed any thing to this category of music at all! (Some may cite Chikku Bukku Railu?)

'16 vayathinilae 17 pillayammA
thAlattu pAduginraen thayAgavillayammA'
To suit with the situation the song sounds like a combination of 'thAlAttu' and female solo.
Udaya has mentioned about 'kannAna pOmaganae'. Vairamuthu has mentioned this song as 'ennai uranga vaikkatha thAlAttu'. I think this is the only 'thAlAttu' expressing a social problem.

I'm not sure whether `Azhagiya Kanne' qualifies in this list, but it is very effective foar making the child sleep.
In fact, I feel thalattu is the most `everyday usable' product of all TFM. No other category of songs can that much fit into real life situations IMO. It is used generations after generations in households. Have you ever seen lovers playing duets and running around in real life, or sad ones singing pathos sitting lonely? But every one of us have experienced Thalattu in real lifes and that makes this category of music sort of exclusive.
Sad that this category is quite ignored in current movies by and large. There may be exceptions but there seems to be no one around to carry IR's mantle in this category.

If you send your email I will write to you about
the singaara punnagai song of Mahadevi. It
is a beautiful song.
I feel paalum pazhamum kaigaLil Endhi of
Paalum Pazhamum will also qualify as a thaalaattu:
a concerned husband trying to induce sleep in a
sick wife.

If you also give some thought, the ending part of
kaadhal siRagai kaatrinil viriththu also is
pretty much a lullaby-type. If you recall, the
movie picturization is also wonderful.. S.Devi
singing the song from Switzerland with the final
humming, and SivajiG sleeping on a rocking chair
and swinging perfectly in tune with the humming,
and sleeping in the process, conveying, without a
word, that the heavenly lovers are in some kind of
telepathic communication and the wife is inducing
sleep in the eyes of the restless husband, from a
far-far-off distance. The picturization of this
last part of the song has never failed to impress
me whenever I see it on Video.

It is interesting to note that edan has mentioned thAlAttu as more realistic form of music. Sure it is more realistic than some types of music.
'sanna thAlAttin muthal varikkAe thOngi vidugirathu sinna kuzhanthai'. Piragu athu yarukkAga pAdappadugirathu?
vayalil vAlai saibavargal pAdum pAdalgalthAn
realistic enru solvathu vundu. No selfishness involved in it.
Devenine songs too ask for some material benefits or 'mOkshA'

g!
I think you are quoting IR's Frontline interview of the late eighties. Correct? Whether or not, I totally agree with your observartions!
IMO, Thalattu is one of the most melodious forms of music with no unwanted noises, and no overload of instrumental stuff. In many cases, instrument itself may not be needed. Just listen to the IR version of Thenpandi and Kamal's version. Anyday I would rate the IR singing more soulful and thrilling (though there are no instruments around to play)

Karpoora Mullai ondru, kai veesum thendral ondru...is according to me, by far the best. Susheela's voice is just fantastic in this.

The right lyrics were "Karpoora bommai" and not "karpoora mullai" as mentioned by me.

I created an album on musicindiaonline.com
with above thalattal songs.
It felt good to hear this .. and our baby
also lked some of the
lullabies.
Someone recently has edited the list without my knowledge and added "usalaampatti pen kutti"
to the list.

Looks like no one remembers the beauty of a composition from Moonram Pirai - "Kanne Kalaimale" rendered beautifully by Yesudas??? I guess that was one of the most touching of the Taalaatu songs in TFM. I also love Nila Kagiradu from Indira, but does it qualify in this category?
