In the 80's few songs came in two different versions. One Happy version other is Patho version. Coincidentally all were composed by Illayraja. Some of them from my memory.. Ironically some of the pathos were better than Happy version.

Vellai pura ondru - Pudhu Kavithai
Enna padacholladhe - Aan Paavam
Paadava - Naan Paadum paadal
Iruparaviagl - Niram Maratha Pookkal
Kadhalin Deepam - Thambikku Endha Ooru
Adi Athadi - Kadalor Kavithaigal

How do I say this without antagonising?
Two versions didn't happen in the 80s alone. It started long before then. And even in the 80s, not all such songs were by IR.
Some samples:
60s: Amaithiyaana nadhiyile, Paar magale paar, Ammadi ponnukku thanga manasu,
70s: Kelaai magane keloru vaarthai, Adi ennadi raakkamaa, Ore jeevan ondre ullam, Malare kurinji malare
80s: Malar koduthen, Mookkuthi poo mele, Tholvi nilaiyena ninaithaal

Hi ROTFL.. i know about quite a few old songs. But it was more frequent in the 80's. Some more that came to my mind.
1) Engirundho Azhaikum
2) Anjali Anjali
3) Tenpandi Seemailyile
Whole point i was trying to make is we don't find that in these days music. Just compare 70's and 80's with 90's. It is less frequent.

DIGRESSION
If you want many versions of one song from the 90s, you don't have to look farther than SA Rajkumar. :)
ROTFL, DhooL
but a small query, do you meant to say "Many Iterations" that suits SAR's songs aptly? coz i think u know there is a sea of difference between these two :-). versions match with situations whereas our beloved's songs are absolute. u have a same "ponnai virumbum bhoomiyilae" situation song(remember its "song" not "songs") for all situations.
btw i quoted ponnai virumbum bhoomiyilae for quoting the situation. imo this song aptly describes the situation of the song ( a kind of peace of mind due to success in love, of a person who is loved by a lady even after knowing that this guy is having some drawbacks). but i understand how derogatory it is when i used it as a quote to explain our beloved's song(again no plural).
SAR's songs a perfect example of "Mutiple Instantiation of a single object" (thank god the OS' garbage collector does its job perfectly).
Finally i beg u ROTFL not to bring our beloved as long as im visiting this forum...u know such postings become irresistable when it comes to our beloved :-)
END DIGRESSION (hopefully)

SAR, SAR endru ivvalu mariyaathaiyodu kooppittu piragu, ippadi kavuthuteengale. :)
I suppose this pathos version was a trend of those days and is no longer used. In fact creating a pathos song from a normal song is not that difficult.
IR had once said the only singer who could bring out emotions extremely well in songs, is .... hold your breath...... TM Soundararajan!
Talking about this issue, I am reminded on the incident during song recording for Naayagan. IR had given several tunes for the song which Janakaraj sings on the boat (Nila athu vaanathu mele), but Maniratnam was not happy.
IR himself liked one particular tune and recommended it highly, but which was turned down.
Now since IR particularly liked this tune, it was decided to use it for a pathos song and guess where the tune ended up? .... you're right! Then paandi seemaiyile was the tune offered for the boat song situation.
The reason why I am saying this is to highlight that accomodating a tune for a pathos situation is not that difficult.
