Listen to the following lines
"Devathai kulitha Neerai alli Theertham endre naan kudippen" from "Anbe Anbe Kollathe" - Jeans.
If you practically think about it, he really meant he wants to drink "sakkadai".

Is vairamuthu talking about women getting "periods" every month. Udane vulgara porennu ninaikadheenga. I think VM means about "that" only.

PP,
If you practically think , you can not make sense out of 50% of songs of kanndasan also. Can you call count them as junk?
If you cann't appreciate the freedom of imagination that the lyricists/poets have , you would not be remembering kamban or bharathi or iLango today or even in future.
Even sky is not the limit for the poets when it comes to comparisons /imaginations.
Fortunately, this is one area which TFM stands distinctly by bringing new words/thoughts/comparisons/ideas etc. time and again without giving boredom. Whereas I can assure you that i can fit any hindi song into a 10x10 word matrix with which you can even write infinite number of songs more to the delight of hindi music fans. They would still love them as it falls within the domain of their knowledge and level of appreciation.
Now, to that Pistha/BiskOthu who will say that VM is algorithmic and will fit any of his song into some NxN matrix .. blah blah blah.. , THERE ARE ONLY SPORADIC examples.

One more question about the same citizen song,
"Pookkaara Pookkaara
En Pookkal motham ethanai solli vidu

What does the "Poo" means here?

PP,
u r right. "poo" or "flower" in the metaphorical and english literiture sense means a women/girl's virginity.
The women,it is often said, is supposed to hold her flower for the man she falls in love. And the man is supposed to pluck the flower by consummating his physical relationship with her.
I am certain that VM is aware about this concept(which i am told is quite popular) and he has delibrately used it in this song.
yes! I agree this song is on the "virasam" side.

FROM ALAVANDHAN....
The song Poruppu poruppu (by SM & Sujatha)...
What the rubbish are the lyrics...I have great respect for VM for his wonderful lyrics especially after ARR's entry. But in this song (perhaps the 1st after 1992), what he wrote is so, so mechanical. I can't digest some verses like...
'Pugalukku VannN Poruppu', 'PanivukkU Pani poruppu' sort of lines.
writing JUST FOR FUN it seems ya...

Pozhuthu,
ithu kUdava theriyalai...?
From time immemorial, it is a convention for poets to compare the characteristics of girl with poo(flower)
mullai poo siRippu
malligai poo maNam
rOja poo ithazh
...
and the kAthali is asking kAthalan to bring out all the characterics of flower in her so that she can see(reach to) the pinnacle of feminity.
Why should you only see any "virasam" side of this ... Please throw away your spectacles of "double meaning" and you will realize that "Beauty is really on the eyes of behold" .
VM sprinkles "spice" every now and then and it is not uncommon in poerty/lyrics.

You don't have to listen Alavandan for this. I can give you a known example: "Eeramana Rojave" in Ilamai Kaalangal.
"Thanneeril Moozhgaadhu
Kaatrulla Pandhu
Ennodu Nee Paadi vaa Sindhu"

Lyricists r welcom to have their 'freedom of imagination', but it shd be healthy. VM just plays with words, and most of us carried away with his jugglery of words, that we don't c into what that word has to do with the context of that song.
Consider 'Take it Easy' song in Kaadhalan for eg. The theme of the song, obviously, is to take things easily, but it slowly goes into 'puratchi' and 'kannagikku silai undu, seedhaikku thaniai silai kidayadhu'. What has puratchi, which is a serious thing, has to do with 'take it easy'?
VM revolves around his small circle of imagination. Either they'll be algorithmic, or will have 'vaanam, bhoomi, jannal, kaikuttai,...'
Don't ever compare this tiny tot with KannaDasan.

KP,
I'm not sure, whether u're arguing for VM or against him. I just listened to the 'saththam illAdha' song. As I said, u've got carried away by the jugglery of words. As for the theme, ther's nothing new, its Bharathiar's 'manathil urudhi vEndum' concept. VM already adapted this in 'Putham pudhu Bhoomi vEndum' (Another algorithmic approach)
Ok,let's xcuse that idiocy and look into those lines.
One of'em says, 'Uccahm Thalai mEl mazhaiai kEttEn'. Can u xplain this?
ok, ok, let's take the same line u've quoted:
'ARAm viralAi pEna kEttEn'
This line is good, xcllnt imagination, but stop, the character who sings this, is a rowdy. Why shd he ask pen to be his 6th finger.
I repeat, a sensible lyricist shd write the character's viewpoint not his own thoughts.
And, of course, this song has 'vAnam, bhoomi'.
So, KP, good luck, next time!

All those lines you have mentioned.. I wouldn't
call them as abaththams. ennaip poRuththavarai,
appadi manadhil 'pErAsai' koLabavargaLE nalla
kavinjargaLAga mudiyum. If God were to appear
and ask: What do you want? These are all the
items that this character (or VM) will ask. So,
no abaththams, as I see the song. It may be ok to
call it as 'formula-based'.
BTW, the second line is..
mAyak kaNNaN kuzhalai kEttEn
From: NagaS (@ 194.149.80.1) on: Mon Sep 25 04:05:46 EDT 2000
Sk., I fully Agree.,
Actually VM wrote that kavithai during a 'Car Breakdown Vipaththu' when his friends asked him what he will ask if God comes before him and decides to give him whatever he wants. Later Bharadwaj tuned that and added it in AmarkkaLam.
