NagasubramaniaN: K.J. Yesudas won the Lata Mangeshkar award from the Madhya Pradesh government in 1992. I understand that this is an annual award given for outstanding achievement in the music field.

NagasubramaniaN:
MP government was honouring Lata Mangeshkar by naming a national award after her. I do not think she is from MP. BTW, I think KJY was the first receipient of this award.

Lata is from Bombay (oops! Mumbai) but being the reigning queen of Hindi Film Music (I hate when people call it Bollywood!) she 'belongs' to the whole of Hindi belt.
The Lata Mangeshkar award has been there for a while now, and if I remember correctly, M.S. Subbulakshmi received it last year.
What is really sad is the fact that the genius of IR is not known to the people North of the Vindhyas!
Nag, regarding your query,
Lata's first number in Tamil was 'Valayosai' from Satya(IR). She also sang a couple of numbers in the Prabhu film, Anand (IR, I guess). I am not sure if she has sung any more numbers.

Neels,
The first song Ms.Lata sang for IR was in a movie called 'Anand", starring Prabhu. Its not "sathya".

Nagas: There is a thread in the archives discussing Hindi singers in TFM. Pl. look at it. App. Lata sang a song much earlier in Tamil, but I am not sure.

Lathas first song in TFM is 'Akbar' under the music direction of Naushad

Ramki: I have a vague memory of listening a Lata - PBS duet. The MD for that movie is Laxmikant Pyarelal and Lyricist is Mayavan?. Do you know what movie is that song from?

I am not positive about this but if "Akbar" is the Tamil version of Mugal-e-Azam, I believe Lata has sung in TFM earlier than that - in "Vaanaratham" (dubbed version of "Uran khatola") - ennai konde povai(?) Music for both by Naushad.

Hi Neels & Naaga,
Nalini is right!
Lata sang the following song for the film 'Vaana Ratham':
"Endhan Kannaalan Karai Neengi Ponaan Nadhiyae Nee Mella Po"
I guess she also sang one or more songs from the same film!
Nalini,
It's 'Maaya Mani' the name of the film (and not 'Mayavan' the lyricist! I only know of a lyricist by name 'Maayavanathan') which has a duet sung by PBS and PS not Lata.
Ramki,
I doubt if 'Akbar' in Tamil had any songs by Lata at all!

Amazing! I wasn't aware that many Hindi flics have been dubbed in Tamil. I would love to listen to the Tamil versions of 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya and 'Panghat Pe Nandlal' and other great numbers from Mughal-E-Azam.
Nalini, thanks a lot for the info.
Ravi, is there any site where these rare numbers are available?
Many thanks

I thought latha is from Goa.. mangEshkar is suppose to be temple in Goa. Can somebody pl. clarify this?
- From: Neels (@ 202.54.125.176)
on: Sat Dec 5 08:52:51 EST 1998
Yes, the Mangeshkar sisters's native place is indeed a temple town called 'Mangesh' in the state of Goa. (As you may be aware, Maharashtrians usually add 'kar' as a prefix to their native place.)
When I said Lata is a Bombayite, I meant that she's settled there and not in M.P. (Her career as an actress in Bombay film insustry -that includes Marathi-never took off, and thankfully she took to singing and How!)

Sorry, I goofed up: It should read "Suffix" and NOT "prefix".
Thanks

Neels,
All her family members r classical singers. Her sister usha mangeshkar has sung lots of Gujarati songs and the whole family was into classical music. She had started her career as a classical singer much bfore she tried acting.

I remember reading that Lata Mangeshkar refused to accept the salary for the first song she sang for IR. Then they gave her a thamboolam with the salary and then she took it. This is as per Gangain Amaran. IR gave her a melodious song in Anand (engirundhO azaikkum). The song is tuned to, sort of, highlight her glorious voice. I am sure Lata appreciated this special treatment, thats probably she refused the salary in the first place.

it is rumored that lata made a statement that she would drop everything of her personal/professional work if IR calls her for a song ... and I think she sang a song for him in a telugu film "akhari poratam" sometime around 1985.

Eden,
Valai Osai is by Asha Bhonsle. I repeatedly see people making this mistake. I don't understand why, though. Did they credit Latha for it?

Hallo Friends
As far as I am concerned and know about Latha & IR - worked together for 2 songs.
1. Sathya - Valaiyosai Kala Kalavena
2. Anand - Aaraaro Aaraaro
If I am not wrongs, both these songs were recorded within a span of 2 or 3 days.
Note : There are so many songs for Asha and IR.
With (MUSICAL) Love

Hi,
Inge Ponveenai from Kannukkoru Vannakkili (an unreleased film of IR with superb songs) is a Lata solo by IR! Kamal's Satya also has a song by Lata that is not in the movie!
Engirundho Azhaikkum from En Jeevan Paadudhu - Nobody can forget!
