here's mine
1.narumugayE(for being IRish)
2.pudhu veLlai mazhai(the prelude is what made me list this song.Wow, the august appearance of the himalayas and the exclamation of madhu is well portrayed by the prelude )
3.puththam pudhu bhoomi vEndum (the interludes and chorus of this song are one of the rare works of ARR that are comparable to IR)
- From: Viswa (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Mon Nov 2 00:00:21 EST 1998
My top 3 :
1. Netru illadha maatram (Pudhiya mugam) - the most melodious and catchy number ever composed by ARR (IMO)
2. Pudhu veLLai mazhai (Roja) - for the voice of Unni Menon and the rich interludes that match the picturization in the backdrop of the Himalayas...
3. Chandralekha (Thiruda thiruda) - for the innovative style of composition and the rendering by Anupama

2. Kadhal Rojave
3. Puthu Vellaimazhai
I still feel Roja is his best album to date.

Viswa and Shankar
Is ARR reaching 50 in the next few years? Please advise.
(I think he may age 50 before film 50)
By the way, my favorite of ARR:
Strawberry Kanne
Kalluri Pookkal
Lucky, Lucky
Three of the most innovative presentations, missed out totall by IR.

bcos,IR doesn't take "inspiration" from sound of music.
- From: Viswa (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Tue Nov 3 02:05:25 EST 1998
Shankar,
IR has taken inspiration from "The Sound of Music" in an SJ with chorus song from a 90s film ! The level of inspiration may have been different, of course ! :-))

Viswa,
There is a difference betn inspiration and "inspiration" (ie., within quotes) ;-))))

Not very upto date on music. My opinion..
1. Pudu vellai mazhai. The music makes you feel as if you are in Kashmir, it is cool.
2. Kathu kathu ( from Uzhavan, I believe its ARRs song, somebody confirm?). This song has a very catchy tune.
3. How about Sevvanam Chinnappen soodum kungumam aagadha? ( Again is it ARR?)
If the above two are not ARR, I will have to vote, Kadhal rojave and Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali.

Ravi Raman:
Songs 2 & 3 are indeed by ARR and from 2 of his lesser acknowledged albums. "Kaathu Kaathu" is from "Uzhavan" (which has other good numbers like "Pennalla, Pennalla" and "Raakozhi Rendu Muzhichirukku" apart from the foot-tapping, Shahul Hameed number - "Maari Mazhai Peyyado") and "Sevvanam" is from "Pavithra", if I am not mistaken. Both albums are in the class of "Pudhiya Mugham", "Roja" and "Thiruda, Thiruda", IMHO, and far better than the mediocre ones that he deals out these days. Unfortunately they seem to have been eclipsed in terms of recognition by ARR's post-muqabla albums :-((( Thanks for reminding me of those wonderful days of listening to ARR's music, overawed by the refreshing creativity in it :-)

In my opinion, ARR's three best songs are:
1. Tamizha Tamizha from Roja ( Simply for the music and a small musical piece that sounds like violinish)
2. Putham puthu bhoomi vendum ( ths chorus and the interludes make you feel really fresh) and
3. Kathalikkum Pennin Kaigal from kathalan ( I love the tune, the humming and the way he introduces the Thavil in the middle, great innovation).

I maintain a website for ARR with reviews on each and every one of his album right from Roja although I haven't had the time to put in reviews on Jeans,Dil Se and Doli Saja Ke rakhna(the latest one).http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/venue/8839>Rahman's home page
I would have probably listened to each and every album of ARR at least 50 times and my top 3 are:
1. Minnale Nee - May Madham
- Sheer Brilliance
2. En Kaadhalae - Duet
- Nothing can be more soulful.
3. Vennilavin Theril Eri - Duet
- Jesudas sounds truly emotional in this violent song.
Other songs which come very close are "Thoda Thoda" from Indira, "Chithirai Nilavu" from Vandicholai Chinrasu,"Oh Bhawre" from Daud.

Thanks for clarifying. I totally agree with you - some of the lesser known songs of ARR are sweeter and much better than his more popular songs.

most people wouldn't have heard one of rahman's fastest-paced songs from "yodhdha" (dunno about the tamil version, but the mallu one is too good). to attempt something like that is an indication of ARR's experimental guts, which few MDs have these days.

2. Uyirae, Uyirae - Bombay (excellent visuals)
3. Kannukku mai - Puthiya Mugam, it was a refreshing change from what IR was regularly churning out at that time.
