  Was seeing 'Ninaithen Vandhaai' the other day. In one scene, Vijay tries to sing 'Mari mari ninne' amidst a group of young kids, and all of'em block their ears and run away. This reminded one of the comments above, about 'Maha ganaps' being too foreign!

  You are right. The scene follows with a song, "ennavalae... ennavalae... engirundhai needhan... kanavinilae... kanavinilae... kaakka vaithai needhan". I can't understand what the director wanted to emphasize by showing some kids and Rambha blocking their ears for "mari mari ninnae". Did he want to show that today's kids and young people don't like such songs or did he want to say that they are more fascinated with western type songs? Whatever it is, one cannot argue on the fact that "mari mari ninnae" is a classic carnatic based song and the song in the film "ennavalae... ennavalae..." was a junk when compared to the former. Oh God, how am I forced to compare these two songs? Forgive me for that.
  
  "Maha Ganaps" is too foreign? Who gave such a comment? Maybe, he needs to hear more foreign songs to appreciate this classic.

  Yep, I agree that comparing 'mari mari ninne' and 'ennavale ennavale' is the worst thing to happen to 'mari mari'! The worst thing is, this 'ennavale' follows after ramba starts off like:
  laali pappu laali pappu polirukkum manasu..
  jaali typpu paattu kaettaal aadhuthindha vayasu..

  It has been several years since I wrote my post on "An algorithmic approach to Tamil verses." Since I wrote that piece, I realize that I have become vastly unpopular. But what the heck, let me go on with my frontal attack on Mr. Vairamuthu's lyrics. It is time for me to upgrade my earlier post.
  
  Now the great Pulavar Vairamuthu has evolved a newer and more high-tech algorithm. We have 50 Kg Taj Mahal and patently absurd concepts like Flight-il vandha nandhavanam (Can somebody please explain what this means?) Basically, the Pulavar wants to be in the swing of things - he wants to tell us that he knows what a fax is and that he is hip to latest cellular phones. Let it be known that he is on top of all high-tech developments and teenage goings on. Sticking to Pulavar's latest algorithm, I came up with the following song:

  See ? It is that simple. It took me all of six minutes to make this song. It is only a matter of time before words like Viagra and Y2K creep into Vairamuthu's songs. (Mark my word - today is July the 27th, 1998. I guarantee this before the end of this year) .

  Kennedy: Wait, I want him to answer. How did you get the scholarship to Trinity School of Music in London? Why wasn't IR given that scholarship? Who gave you the funds to travel? Answer me, I know it was all a conspiracy by ManiRathnam, Bharathiraja, Balachandhar, and Jayalalitha. Accept the truth. Sign here that everything you are is because of IR, do it or die.
  
  ARR: Huh?
