All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Next movie of KamalHassan is Karumandi where he is second hero to Simbhu. Simbhu will be playing the leading role and save Kamal from villain b'cause Kamal do no to fight in this movie. Heroin will be Kiran for Simbhu and Simran for Kamal. But Simbhu will marry both heroin leaving Kamal without a partner and become MENTAL. Simbhu will tell Kamal in this film that it is time to go for Kamal in this film industry b'cause Simbhu is the next SUPERSTAR & PADMASHREE

Kamal should add Kiran's sexy song in this movie to gaim market for his film. Vijay also have done this in his movie THIRUMALEI - the super hit film.
We dont have to teach Kamal in this matter because he knows more...he he he. The only way to save this movie is postpone it first and add a 2 minutes scene to the film and send it back to the cinema theater. The 2 minutes scene is the appearance of Rajinikanth as Gundappa Mammooty Pannayar who act as Kamal's father. Rajinikanth only have to do 3 steps in the 2 minutes scene & the film will become a mega hit.3 steps are cigar smoking, drinking alcohol and eat pan parag (paakku). Kamal - think about this

Hi
I dont know why this bad response. This is a better movie than Hey Ram. This movie is quite pacy and that is the negative point of it. There is quite a chaos shown which becomes tough to understand. Apart from that Kamal has matured as a director and more importantly has not overdone things.
He has definitely improved on this movie and I dont think this movie is bad. He has given good opportunities to Pasupathi and Abhirami , both of them excelled. The movie is good. pls. watch the movie.

two encouraging reviews so far...looks like the film is not a 'disappointment', but at the same time it is not in the 'awesome' category...correct-a?

You already mentioned Both reason why people do not like any movies.
1 Slow moving
2 Difficult to understand

The basic problem in the movie I think is Kamal's insistence of these two narrations of the story.
This necessiated I believe due to his focus on the theme being against capital punishment.
If it had not been the case, he could have started the story from the village and could have used the gained time for more focus on the hatred and the relationships.
But believe me, some great directorial touches were seen in this movie.
1. Abhirami hanging herself and using the bull rather than a chair or stool. I thought this was excellent direction.
2. Kamal acting quite well on demise of his grand mother
3. Brilliant mix of telgu/tamil dialogues in napolean's house and the smart reaction by napolena's mother to avoid police
4. kamal exceeded any Indian actor when saving the lone lady from the mob . believe me he acted very well.
5. The police inspector did quite well.
But the drawback is Kamal has put in two stories in one and the time is not enough.
but guys, go and see this at least he is not posing as the next CM, not posing as a person who is there to save all us.
he is an actor/director who is doing good job, making some mistakes, but learning.....
soooooo guys go and see To add to this, am not a die hard kamal fan. I thought and sitll think that Alavandhan is the most absurd movie taken in Indian cinema

Sathya ,
1.How was the background score in the movie ?
2.How are the songs picturised in that movie ?
3.This may be a excellent movie .But will this movie be commercially successfull ?

1. BGM too good during title music and climax but not so importance to BGM as it is a movie more relying on dialogues
2. Songs quite good but cut short by one para
3. Dont know. hope it is so that he can get some money and make one more movie. We can watch him than Danush and Simbu doing nonsense.

Saw Virumaandi,SUPER!. Thats the one word to say.
Even I came to know the bits and pieces of story, there are new twists and the film is both commercial cum classic.
and all has lived in theis\r roles. Songs are less used and comedy is also less but full of action, love and bravery,
even patriotism. In Box office, i dont know will it be a blockbuster or not, but not a flop, it will satisfy all
catagories, as kamal is an innocent villager, no english dialogs or city based tastes, not even one charecter is
wasted, each charecter is well defined.
The screenplay is a bit modest.Playback is less used.To say about cons, now i dont feel anything as negative,
i have to see once again

Saw Virumaandi, first day first show in Toronto.
If you expect another cinematic experience like Devar Magan. Sorry. This one is too real and natural to be a typically Indian Cinematic Experience. But I think it is less ‘real’ than Hey Ram or Mahanadhi. A sign of Kamal the artist coming to an understanding with Kamal the producer/businessman? Perhaps.
The screenplay is riveting and consuming. The movie was more than 2 & ½ hours but did not feel it. I just wanted to know what happens next.
Kamal’s acting reminded me of Sivaji at times – not because it was overdone. Just the style. Especially the scene after his grandmother dies. I did not realise Abhirami was such a capable actress. Napolean plays his role with such poise, it is sure to be one of his best roles, even though he does not have a big role. Both the dude playing Pei Kaman the inspector, and Pasupathy have excelled in their portrayal. Nasser does a small cameo. The other major role is played to perfection by Rohini, ex. Mrs. Rahuvaran. Even minor players like OAK Thevar, Bala Singh, S.N Luxmy, and Periya Karuppa Thevar play their parts well.
There are not many scenes where BGM is used. It is mostly natural sounds (or sound effects), but almost all the songs are used as bgm. I was disappointed ‘karumaathur kaatukkulle’ was only partly used, even that as BGM. But, 10 minutes into the movie, I knew this was not going to be a regular Tamil movie interspersed with music videos.
The song ‘katpagraham vittu sami veliyeruthu’ is used to stunning effect in the climax. I loved the way the volume of the song drowns out other natural sounds at certain parts of the lyrics. Also, the drum beats in that song, add so much weight to that scene. Beautifully done. You have to experience it.
The way ‘onna vida’ is picturised is so sensual and beautiful, but yet again, no singing and dancing by the leads. The other pick is ‘antha kaandamani’. The festival scene by night is extremely well choreographed and shot. It is a visual treat. The only singing and dancing song is ‘kombula poovu suththi’. Even here, it is made to blend in with the movie. No dancing in front of foreign buildings.
Towards the end, you see Kamal’s penchant for blood and gore peak in a little. But he has managed to control the urge quite well. No long close-ups of severed limbs etc. I am sure many people will thank their respective gods for that.
The movie also has some hilariously funny scenes. But they are not forced into the screenplay. Kamal has used the naturally witty nature of 'gramaththu makkal' to write some wickedly funny dialogues.
I found the climax a bit confusing. I could not figure out the exact reason for such wide spread riot, and the reasons behind all of Pei Kaman’s actions in that scene. To rectify this situation, I plan to watch the movie again – hopefully today:-)
As far as ‘good cinema’ goes, I still think Hey Ram was Kamal’s best attempt at it. This is a movie somewhere in between Hey Ram and Devar Magan. Very original and very rustic. Thought provoking and entertaining at the same time.
Now, I will sit back and wait for someone to tell me that Hey Ram is a crap movie, and that Virumandi is an ‘exact’ copy of some Hollywood movie, and that both IR and Kamal should role over and play dead so that YSR and Simbhu/Thanush can take over the industry. Go ahead. Make my day.
....later
PS. I quite enjoyed the following tongue firmly in cheek dialogue early in the movie:
Ochchu Kaalai (Bala Singh) : (Calling out to Virumaandi) Sandiyare! Sandiyare!
Virumandi: Why are you calling me Sandiyar! My parents named me Virumaandi
Ochcu Kaalai: Doesn’t matter what your real name is. Everybody just calls you Sandiyar anyway.

Watched the movie today opening show in Tamilnadu. I think the movie is Ok, very different from usual tamil flicks. I really liked the first part, it has a novel concept of telling the same story from different views (of Koththala thevan's and virumandi's). Kamal has tried the style of Tarantino's (just like the last part of Jackie brown). But second part is savasava. There are better ways to tackle the issue and conclude the story but I don't understand why he chose to go for riot in the prison, looks very commercial to me.
Songs picturization: now I understand why komubula alone was screened before the release. Rest of the songs are not coming full length on the screen. IR has given an excellent album, but I think Kamal wasted most of it, especially onna vida. Starts off so beautifully and a few scenes go smooothly (I must say excellent) but Kamal spoils just like he did in nee parththa of hey ram (Abirami abirami, sila angles-ellam thevaiya). oru heroinaiyum vittu vaikka mattaru pola. He should have avoided these scenes.
BGM: Thanks to OST, first 20, 25 mins nobody understands what they are talking about.Because of it, my whole concentration was on dialogues. Couldn't listen to many pieces if at all they exist. I can hear only one piece which was excellent. When Kamal talks about annalakshmi during the interview.
Need to watch once again. My guess is the movie will do good business.
