With all these crap threads on IR vs ARR, whereas they cannot be compared, why shouldn't we discuss about HJ and ARR ??
Same style of music, same instruments ...
So, do you guys think that HJ is better than ARR ?
In fact, with the latest super hit of ARR, we can think so ...
HCARRFans ... it's all in the game ....

oh my god!!i am getting tired of arr vs hj and arr vs il...
ilayaraja is like very good...king of melodies!! arr is king of other stuff..only he started the new trend...i am not going to say anything bad about Hj then u guys will bark..anyways Hj has that style of Arr..Hj is doing very nicely cuz he just started..only 3 years..
rahman is kinds outta ideas, so he composes rubbish like paravasam as u guys said!!
so this just shows ilayaraja is the best..he lasted for 25 years!he is still composing music!
but rahman composed fantastic Boys, KKs and e 20 u 18 is alrite!! at least rahman doesn't copy so much of tamil md's music only!harris just copies all of rahman..check this out-http://www.geocities.com/jeansdi/Copy_Kat.htm..
ok wateva!!i am just a big fan of rahman so i can't support Hj..watever!!!

There is nothing much to compare between the two. If ARR and HJ together make an album, with that be different? No. bcos their style are almost the same and they more or less think alike and they both copy. The whole world music is there for them to steal from and that's why it's hard to tell the 'nativity' of their music.
However I feel ARR is more knowledegable than HJ.
Ilayaraja stands out of the rest of the crowd. His instruments talk and his music would touch your soul. That's Ilayaraja's power. The power to touch your heart. Both ARR and HJ lack that power. Listen to 'oliyile therivadhu' and 'elangathu veesudhey' for example. Virumaandi's 'onna vida' is also in that category.
Why ARR and HJ don't come up with that kind of melody??

ARR did a good job in karuthamma and kizhakku cheemayilae. He nicely blended indian folk music with western music. I can't compare those with KKS. Even in Taj mahal, ARR didn't impress me that much.

It is indeed confusing but I noticed that the other 'x' is also an IR fan like me, though our openions sometimes differ.
Mr x (@ 156.153.254.42), would you pl consider using a different nick?. I use 'x' for almost 2 years in tfm (but it doesn't mean that I own this) and I am very used to it.

I think ARR,IR and YSR have the ability to touch the soul but HJ definately lacks that.everytime i listen to Kannathil Muthamittal,Parthale paravasams-azhage sugama, jail gana from boys, just too many to name from ARR and IR. and the Where do we go song from YSR has sumthin abt it too.
but havent gotten anything that good from HJ yet.

Piratheepan,
KM's 'oru dheivam thandha poove' is really great song, especially Jayachandran's version. Also I liked 'pachai nirame' from alai payudhey. ARR always saves his best for Maniratnam but for other directors he doesn't sweat that much. That's what I feel. Personally 'azhage sugama' didn't impress me. It is just an ordinary song. Boyz songs is not for all. It was just targetted for young audience.
According to me, a good song should be liked by everybody irrespective of age and taste. However it all comes down to one's personal taste. How does one develop his or her taste in music? What's the difference between good taste and bad taste? How come a particular song impresses me but not you. These are all the questions that nobody can answer clearly. I can imagine some people who can claim that 'oru deivan thandha' song is not that great but I certainly can't imagine anyone disliked 'IR's 'ponn maalai pozhudhu' or 'andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu'. That's where I see the difference between Ilayraja and the rest. I think people would agree with me on this point.
btw, YSR did create a few good songs like 'chuditar anindhu vandha sorgame' (though I didn't like the choice of female singer for that song) and 'oivedu oivedu nilave' (again bavatharani was a bad choice).

hmmm the answer to ur question abt choice of music its a learned thing. You pick it up in grade school etc.At least this is wat i remember from my psychology class. As for ur mentioning of IR and his songs be loved by everyone or a song must be loved by everyone to be considered good i dont feel that.Notice how no one is talking about IR Konji Pesalam...he is not one above everyone in my opinion.
and i think one problem we have with our MD's is them trying to appeal to everyone.most musicians take on a certain forte and go with that but our MD's try to go a lil of every which way (which is good in sum aspects also) but sumtimes u find numbers way outta place becuz of this. One example is in Citizen when hes on the run with vasundra and they hide in the woods and a songs comes out.lol.
