FOR LOVERS OF TAMIL FILM SONGS, THIS WAS PROBABLY
THE GREATEST COMBINATION AFTER THE MSV-KANNADASAN
ERA. IS IT NOT A SHAME THAT THE PUBLIC IS DEPRIVED
OF GREAT MUSIC AND GREAT LYRICS BECAUSE OF SOME
PERSONAL DISAGREEMENT?
CAN WE, AS MUSIC LOVERS, DO SOMETHING TO BRING THEM TOGETHER?

Dear Music Lover,
It seems to be the BEST IDEA. It will be great if we could do this. IMO both may want to work together but ego stops them. Thank u for starting
this topic.
Thanks,
Nesan

IMO, Because of IR's music VM's varigaL got some life.
It is definitely NOT the other way.
Now, VM got ARR and writing lyrics like:
50 Kg Tajmahal
Clinton maga Stanfordil padikirA
iduppai pArthEn kAnOm, mEla pArthEn krishnanin vishwaroobam
therinjathu...
VM is too commercialzied. Very rarely he provides
meanigful songs. Also once the artists become popular- they
develop this celluloid ego - where there is no touch of
reality. It is very difficult for them to compromise.
The only exception, I can see is IR & BR - they seemed
to have some sort of good understanding.
As Ravi said, I don't think we can do anything to
bring them together.
IR is way ahead man!!!! and gains NOTHING from VM.

I completely agree with you. What I think is that
if they work together, we can get quality music with good lyrics in it, as they gave us in the early 80's. Of course, IR is not missing VM but
VM had missed him a lot in the past. VM's lyrics for ARR songs are not worth discussing here.

I dont think Vairamuthu misses Ilaiyaraja either. He has been giving good and bad lyrics inspite of MDs. VM has given good quality lyrics under every MD whether they are Chandrabose or MSV or DEva or ARR or Vidhyasaagar. So we may be fans of IR but we dont have the rite to criticisize someone bcoz they have refused to work together.
Comeon guys lets be rational in our thoughts ....

I honestly believe that dia-muNdu should have been given the pink slip and sent away
immediately after andhi mazhai pozhigiRadhu. How do y'all tolerate his lyrics? Neither
TFM nor TF has gained anything retaining him. All these, of course, IMHO.

Perhaps, saying that VM writes good lyrics
is like saying MGR acts well? Similar to
MGR in acting (but not to such a scale), VM indeed
has attracted masses with his lyrics, whether or
not he writes really good and imaginative stuff!
I think the fellow has understood the TFM audience
very well. I read recently that VM is going to
seriously start writing stories and screen plays
for some big budget movies. VM has great understanding
of the audience' pulse. So I an 100% sure that he
is going to be a hit there also. Soon after we will
be seeing a movie with:
Kadhai, Vasanam, Iyakkam (& Isai, Acting) --
DiamaNdu.
If that is the trend, I don't think he will make
any effort to rejoin IR.

Dear SK,
Not every body who have understood TFM / TF audience always do well and some of those who do well may do for a short time it's really very very few who do make a tremendous impact and ever lasting and possibly MSV, Kannadasan, IR are few of them to name . Our Diamundu is no where near them. Invariably even the greatest lyric of the greatest lyricist also has to depend on the great sense and composition of the MD (The tune , rhythm), a great lyric can be made not appealing at all by virtue of a very inferior tune, at the same time an average lyric could be greatly appealing to all masses by virtue of a great tune (Ex: "unnai taane tanjam enru nambi vanden maane" of Nallavanukku Nallavan, I remember watching the great load of joy / pleasure in a drunkard rickshaw driver in Chennai on a night when he was listening to this song and made us stop and forced us to listen to this song. How many of the masses really enjoyed "Meghame Meghame" of Paalaivana Cholai, though the tune was a sort of average to above average ( Inspite of SG lifting the original Ghazal tune). What happened to once upon the great successful director "Bhagya Raj" who attracted the TF audience so much and who made most of the sodappal but big hits.
It is the EGO and only the EGO in all these people, VM definitely misses IR, he may have ARR or lot of ARR's arround but the point is that hits by them adds to these ARR(S) and not to VM. In fact ARR -VM's combos ,in my openion, are one of the very very inferior songs ever given by a MD-lyricist in TFM 50 years Period, with absolutely no artistic values.

ILamai Vegam..
When VairaMuthu broke into TFM, He had to break
the spell of KaNNaDhaaSan to get a foothold.
Also, He was brimming with rebellious PudhKavithai
form and with ILaRatham .. He wanted to make TF Songs different. He had lots of motivation and
his creativity was working overtime. Hence songs
like "Idhu Oru PonMaalai PoZhudu!"..etc were born.
These songs do show a Vegam to make a difference
in the way ThamiZh Songs are written.
Konjam Konjamai.. IRukku KodukapaDum Mariyathai
Thanakku KiDaikka Villaye endra AathanGam Iruvar
mathiyilum Puyal Veesa KaraNamagivittadhu.
IR vittu Pirindha PinBhu , Dubbing PaDanGaLukku
Paadal EZuTha Vendiya Kattayam .. Probably taught some reality lessons to VM.
By the time ARR burst into TFM, VM's Creative edge
has become blunt and has become a Fill-In-The-Blanks lyricist.
IMO, Even if IR & VM get together there will not
be any path-breaking creativity from VM..

Thats fine, but, at least, he will not fill in the blanks, if he joins IR. May be, from there, he may get back his drive, udhvEham, etc., and may give better songs. I dont think big time lyricist like VM need to grope around the corner like this, writing nonsensical calques and catchwords. In the first place he should have held to his pen that wrote real good kavidhai in the beginning, as you guys have acknowledged. He must have evinced the kind of perseverance that his alter ego turned nemesis Raaja showed in the process of getting back to the driver's saddle, (in the respective departments.....)Definitely, Raaja's commercial comeback (there was never a comeback, he stays!)
has got a lot of quivering at VMs back! Admit or not.
If VM had been really interested in a joint venture with Raaja, he must have, at least given some good, great songs, in the recent years, so as to force the producers talk on his behalf (e la Hariharan, Unni)Something like "Raaja saar, neenga enna vEnnAlum sollunga, Vairamuththu avarOda kavidhaigaLAla, makkaLai kattipOttirukkirAr. avarudaya pAttukkaLE sAtchi. ippO avarai vachchi nAnga pAttu yezhudhalainnA yengaLukkudhAn nas(h)tam. konjam neenga yerangi vandhA nalladhunga....."
Now, can any producer go to Raaja and do this? NO.
With pazhani bArathi doing well, with all season vAli around the corner, there seems to be no need for anyone to plead for VM. Thats the very reason he is holding on to ARR, whatever be at stake.
Bones, VM commercialized yendrAl enna? VM yenna MDs aLavukku panam panna mudiyumA? oru status irukkumE thavira, 'cost' oru prachchanayE irukkAdhu. What say?
Bones, kadaiseela sonneengaLE, adhu sooper. IR is way ahead. VM is now "auld langsyne" kavignyar.
IMHHHO, MSV-TKR reunion evvaLavu news, flutter create panniyadhO, avvaLavu news create pannalAm indha reunion. Not songs!! Just a good occasion for historians!! (MSV-TKR fans, just a reference, no jibe or jeer intended)
I am sure, Raaja will not invite VM. Its not the question of VM going to Raaja, here. Hmmmm....What to do?? Lyricists MDsai nambi irukkavEndiyavarai, yendha oru nalla kavignyanukkum idhudhAn gadhi.
nAm ovvoruvarum life'il oru silarai pagaiththukkoLAmal irukkiROm. adhupOlaththAn.....
VMudaya ego, pulamai, etc., Raajavai pagaiththukkoLvadhOdu mudindhuvittadhu. "nee yena man? nAn engu yezhudhinAlum nandrAga yezhudhuvEn" yendru VM sonnamAdhiri theriyavillaiyE!!:)))))

Now let me ask a question. How much does lyrics contribute to popularity of a song after the arrival of IR and others??I have noticed that songs like 'raja rajathi rajan indha raja' or 'raasavin manasile' or'chikku bukku rayile' etc etc have become very popular, inspite of the awful lyrics. When such songs can become popular merely bcoz of the tunes then how can we expect a kavignar to write more meaningful or creative lyrics??Also how many films have good story line that demands decent lyrics from these lyricists??
All these directors and producers demands for a catchy tune and the lyrics are written just to fill in the gap. When such a condition prevails no kavignar will be prepared to waste time on writing meaningful lyrics.
If i had been the director for say Indian i would have straight away rejected VMs lines like'telephone manippol' and would have ordered him to come out with more meaningful lyrics. But shankar was more than satisfied with what he got.
So again lyricsin thalaiezhuthu is being nirnaichufied by the director and the producer.
A lyricist who wants to make fast money is more than happy to satisy his directors and rasigargal
with less meaningful lyrics as there is no proper appreciation for good lyrics.
Even if Kannadasan had been alive ,will be facing the same situation.
Infact it can be noticed from his works with IR.
Songs like 'thaalatudhe vaanam' or 'poongatru thiumbumaa' werent any special. The songs became hit only bcoz of their exceptional tunes.
Sorry for the blah blah:)))
