In a recent thread, discussion turned to the validity of recycling a tune from one language to another by the same composer. I believe it’s good to have a good tune in as many languages as possible since it may be new to someone who focuses in only one language. Many in the DF feel that a recycled tune shows the composer in a bad light. Anyway, during this discussion I realized that Ilayaraja has many Telugu to Thamizh and vice-versa recycled hits. Since we don’t have a list of all these remade movies and soundtracks, I would like to come up with a thorough list of all such movies by Ilayaraja along with details about singers who sang the original and the recycled tune.

I don't follow Telungu movies, but heard of the following remakes from Thamizh to Telungu:
-Alaigal Oaivathillai
-Kadaloara Kavidhaigal
-Ram Lakshman
-Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai
I have also heard that many Rajini movies get dubbed in Telungu. Are the songs dubbed as well? Does IR do the dubbed songs or some Telungu MD?

one song that went from TAMIL to Mallu - "Changathil paaadadha kaavidhai" - this went to Mallu as "Thumbiaa Thoombakodaaa"

Thanks for the above list of movies submitted. It appears that the above list refers to movies that were multilingual. What about songs that change language across cinematic themes?
The director of Aur Ek Prem Kahani had a reputation of using musical compositions without the composer's permission. I believe there are many songs in malayalam which didn't come across to tamil! ! !

Sadmaa-"Yeh Zindagi gale " is "En Vaazhvile oru vasantham"
"Madura mari kozhunthu vaasam" made it into "Jegaveera devudu athiloga sundari"
"Mujhe bahon me" from Mahadev is nothing but "Antha nilaavathaan naan kaiyile pudichaen"
"Fikhar no kar pyaare" from Mahadev is that seetha kavarchi song in "Guru Sishyan"

Dear Udhaya,
This is an enormous task :-)
Practically 75% of IR's telugu movies are
remakes of Tamil hits. I am not talking about dubbed ones here. Some of IR's telugu originals have been dubbed back to Tamil.
About dubbed flicks, as a rule the songs get dubbed also. ( and by Ilaiyaraaa.. why would
they get another MD to do the songs ?? )
Practically every Kamal, Rajni movies gets dubbed..
If you are looking in to the instances where IR has recycled his tamil tunes, I think you should not look into dubbed films..
Also, IR at times has recycled a tamil song in to more than one telugu song. That is he would have songs in different films with the same tune :-)
I guess, he can't keep track of the songs he has already recycled..
One example :
'Vaadi En Kappa..' from 'Alaigal Ov..' becomes a duet ('Neethone Danka') in Chiranjeevi's 'Stuartpuram Policestation' ( I have a vague feeling this movie has been dubbed into tamil - producing another tamil version of Vaadi En kappakazhange ) and another duet ( 'Guvvala gudi...' ) in Venkatesh/Suhasini film Vaarasudochhadu

'Gujjana Gudi Guvvala Gundamma...' in Venkatesh/Suhasini film Vaarasudochhadu, has only the starting lines same as "vaadi enn kappa kezhangae". The remaining parts of the song are fresh tunes.
BTW, vaarudochchaadu has two more 'dubbed' songs from Tamil.
"Jinjanakku janakku" from Enga ooru paattukkaran is dubbed.
"Kuttha chembu" from Annakkili is dubbed as "pachchi paala" by SPSailaja & KSC.

I have been out of DF for a while. Busy in life with a kid.
About the remakes, may be I am exaggerating a little.. It's more like 50% !
Here are some tamil -> telugu IR songs :
1) 'Paavurama' by S.Janaki in 'Aa Okkati Adakku' - recycle of 'Shenbagame' - Asha Bhosle
2) all the songs in Aaradhana ( remake of Kadaloara Kavidhaigal )
3) all the songs in Aasthulu Anthasthulu ( remake of a tamil film - don't know what )
4) Abhinandana got dubbed into tamil
( IR reused one of his tunes from this film in the film Anveshana )
5) All the songs in Amma Koduku ( remake of Senthamizh Selvan )
6) Anthahpuram got dubbed in to Tamil
7) Anveshana got dubbed in to Tamil
8) Chanti - remake of Chinna Thambi
9) Chinna Rayudu - remake of Chinna Gownder
10) One songs from Chettu kindha pleader ( 'Chalti Kaa Naam Gaadi' - SPB, Chitra) - reused version of 'Chinna mani kuyile'

"Mathurai Marikozundu Vaasam" tune was reused in "Jagadega Veerudu Athilokha Sundari". That movie was dubbed in Tamil also and the same tune came back to Tamil with different lyrics. The movie name in Tamil is "Kathal Devathai" *ing Sridevi and Chiranjeevi. In the same movie, there is one more reused tune, But, I don't remember that.

The song `Olaththumba', a massive hit throughout Kerala (film: pappayuda swantham appoos by Fazil) got recycled into some Thamizh film. I don't know the name of the film but heard the song many times (both SJ & KJY versions are there)...In the pallavi, the name `Bala gopalan' occurs...can someone tell the name of the movie (BTW, is the movie itself a recycle?)
OTOH, remakes of movies from other languages which had others as MDs were always treated with extraordinary scores by Raja (may be with an urge to better the original). The best example is:
`nOkkaththA dhoorathu kaNNum nattu' (Jerry amaldev) to `poovE poochooda vA'.
The recent remake `Friends' appeared not to have recycles of the Malayalam originals that were better IMHO:-(
kalApani songs had just been dubbded for Thamizh siraichAlai (sempoovE is a lovely song, it had MG Sreekumar in the TF version too)

I think you are talking about 'Solaip poonthendRalil oonjalaadum chinnap paingiLi' song, The movie itself was dubbed it tamil.,
I think SPB sang tamil version of 'Sempoovee'., MGS sang only 'suttum sudar vizhi' in tamil.,

Another song from Mallu to Tamil is Manikkutti kurumbullor ambili poovayi(film ??) to Oru nandhavanam ingu vandhadhu in Kumbakonam Gopalu.
Both are kind of thalattu situations.
In lot of recycle cases, the interludes have been changed drastically to suit the moods of the story which is the hallmark of the maestro.

In Malayalam Movie Silk Smitha Danced as Boat girl for this song. I don't remember the song and movie.

what about recycled songs from tamil to tamil.
sakara kattikuku from mella thridandhu kadahu was a 100% recycled song (adi masam??) from the movie sittu kurivi.
The other songs, I can think of is, varudu varudu villagu from satya was reused in one of 90's bakaya raj movie ( vittla vishangue?/) and
vaiya vaiya from uttma rasa is a recylced one from
per sollum pillai.

I think Yaathramozhi or Kalioonjal was remade in Thamizh as URavugaL. I bought the CD, it has one great song,"Kaakaala Kannamma" by SPB and a mallu singer. The singers were bad for the rest of dubbed songs.

Thanks again. Yes, I'm trying to compile as thorough a list as I can. The more I hear of the recycled ones in other languages, I'm curious about hearing IR's good original compositions in other languages that haven't made it to Thamizh yet. That would have to be another worthy list.

"mAsi mAsam" ('dharmadhurai) was reused in a telugu film (stg: bAlakrishnA, divyabarathi) and the same tune came back to Thamizh with different lyrics in the dubbed version named 'vAliban' - not sure if the MD of the telugu film was IR though.

Shanmugam,
Valiban is "Bobbili Raja" *ing Venkatesh and Divyabarathi, it doesn't have any 'maasi masam' tune song.
