In this thread, I want to highlight some of the songs from IR in the '90s which are brilliant but have in my opinion gone unrecognized because of the popularity of the movies. I would frequently play these songs to my friends who would not have heard of these movies before and they will be absolutely impressed by these songs. Pls. join in to contribute to this list.

The first song I want to start with is "Azhagana Thenpandi" sung by IR from the movie "Pudupatti Ponnuthayee".
This song is beautifully composed with a western tune with excellent guitar background. The interludes have from typical village type music blending well with the tune. IR has sung the song really well.
The next song is "Oorurangum Nerathile' from Pudupatti Ponnuthayee also sung by Uma Ramanan and swarnalatha. This song has a liting tune and great beats. It is exteremy well sung and a gret mix of chorus at appropriate places. Set in a village background, the song is composed with a lot of freshness.
This movie also also has a song "mankutti" sung by Arunmozhi and chitra which is a very melodious song.
If you have not heard these songs, you will just love them.

From Kolangal, "Oru Kootil" as mentined above is a very melodious song. It has interesting beats for this song.
Also in this movie, the song "thendral vanthu" sung by Arunmozhi and Lekha is set in western classical style. Great composition with bass guitar in the background. The violin music in the first interlude and how if effortlessly blends into the whole song rfelects IR's mastery.
"Ullasam", also in the same movie, is such a great melody sung by chitra. In my opinion, this song should be considered as one of the top melodious songs composed by IR.
Other great songs of the '90s, have you listened to "Ival Yaro" sung by Arun Mozhi and SJ in "Rajavin Parvaiyele". Great composition! Other terrific songs in this movie are "Gummi" song by Mano and "Marudhani char eduthu" by Mano also.
I'll add more later

'Kattikidalam kattikidalam...' of Poovarasan is a great (erotic?) melody IMO. The innovative tabla beats are just mesmerizing. If any of you haven't heard it before, just do it! SPB and Chitra(?) at their best!! But, forgive the lyrics :-)

The song "oru chudar" from "rajavin parvaiyele" sung by SJ and Mano - a great song and a must listen.
Another brilliant unique compoisition by IR is "Ele Ennale" sung by IR from "karuvelam pookal". The song with villagy lyrics is set to a western tune with excellent beats.
This movie also has a very melodious song sung by sujatha "kalaiyele kanmuzhicha". This song combines excellent melody and orchestration.
Also listen to "pallaku vandiruchu" sung by Bhavadha - another great song very rich in its composition.
Other lovely songs if you have not lsitened to are:
Thathi Thathi Thavidum - Periya Kudumbam
Thiruvonam - kavalai padathe sagodhara
pozhudhu vidinjiruchu - vasuki
Muthu Muthu - maya Bazaar 1995
naan porandhu - maya bazaar 1995
I will add more later.

ennai thottu pinnikonda - unna nenache paatu padichen. this song was not accorded the 'hit' status and thus was played very rarely when it was released in 1992. a great meldoious number based on reethigowlai/sudha dhanyaasi(?)
sola kiligal rendu - kovil kaalai
ellorukkum nalla/ellorum sollum paatu - marupadiyum - cannot find these songs on the net
veera - pattu poo poo - a great beatsy 'aerobic'-style song set in naatai and sung by chitra.was edited out of the film.
oru kanam oru yugamaaga - another great melancholic duet from nadodi thendral again edited out of the film. Bharathiraja is peerless when it comes to editing out great songs.
kaathirunthen thaniye - a great duet based on mohanam from the film 'raasamagan'- available in rex's site.
poongaatru - kizhakkum merkkum - sung by bhava- a melodious and beatsy number.
alai meedhu - kaadhal kavithai - vintage IR composition which sounds good in spite of Bhava. set in madhyamavathi, if this song had been sung by swarna it could have been compared with the likes of maalayil yaro or maasi maasam. thgis song was overshadowed by diana diana.
manikuyil isaithathadi - a great song by mano from the film thangamanasukaaran
thaneerile mugam paarkum - duet by uma ramanan, arunmozhi from the film manikuyil(?)
mahanadhi - sollaatha ragangal ennanna - again a great duet, vintage IR and once again edited out from this great film, but u can hear traces of it in the BGM.
ila nenje vaa - vanna vanna pookal - by KJY.
vannachindu vandhu - kovil kaalai - mano, SJ - a nice duet.

Some one had mentioned 'unnai ethri parthen' from 'vanja girija'. There are two other songs from this movie which should be considered among one of IR's best. The song 'munnam seitha thavam' sung by SPB and SJ. This song has great beat and real lovely flute solo in the second interlude. The other song in this movie that is great is "othaiyele ninnathenna' sung by chitra brilliantly composed with a simple, lovely orchestration behind it.
The other un/underrecoginzed songs of IR in the '90s are:
Athukara mama - kattalai
ninaikindra pathaiyil - Athma
Vaarayo - Athma (All the songs in this album are great, the most popular being 'kannale kathal kavithai'
valli valli - deiva Vakku
kathoram - Chinna mappilai
vennilavu - Chinna mappillai
Alolam Padi - Avaram Poo
Manthiram - Avaram Poo
Even recently the album kadavul has some great songs. "Poovarasm Poove" by Arunmozhi & Sujatha ia a very melodious song with great orchestration. "kadhalai Marappathu" by Unnikrishnana and sujatha is set to western classical type of a tune. "Adhi sivan", a bhakthi song but so well composed that you want to hear repeatedly. It is well sung and again contanins a breathtaking flue solo in the second interlude. "Kovilukkul" sung very well by Chitra is an interesting song. On your initial hearing it sounds like a a dappanguthu song but you can get addicted to this song. This song has a bhangra type of rythm to it but set to a typical tamil villagy tune. This album is a great one.

That's the whole point for me starting this thread. In my opinion, IR has come out consistently with great music in the '90s till date. This is just an effort to highlight those movies and songs for those who might not have heard these songs.

My Contributions:
1. Another song from the Movie "Ilaya Raagam": "Unnai nan Kai Pidikka......" a great song with western beats. Its funny that many have not listened to that song. "Marudhani.." is another good song from the same movie.
2. Songs from "Kangalin Vaarthaigal"
3. "Kizhakale Kevali Satham.." from Nattuppura Pattu. Really melodious.
Its ridiculous that people like Deva are even around.
