I am not alone! Poonthere is a good one too. Thanks vengayam:)
It is indeed suprising that LV got a soliary offer after the run away success of 7vathu Manithan. That too from CVR who had introduced him in 79.
Contemproary feel to Bharathi's Kakkai chiraginilE -one tune Bharathi himself must have enjoyed for sure.
a song that could have fitted even in Jagadguru Adisankarar - Swami Dakshinamoorthy's master piece.Konjam bhakthi, sense of helplessness, kazhivirakkam, philosophy -KJY is a perfect choice.Sarasangi without M1 ?-delightful classical touch.
Thanks for bringing out such wonderful ones from the 70s.I am trying to print this out and send it to LV himself along with the writeups on GKV.I am sure LV must enjoy the write up more than the suNdal viniyoga Kalaimamani.
famous father,Jet-setting high profile brothers/sister-in-law .....but the man with such an immense talent languishing in some obsucre suburb of chennai doing II fiddle to musical non-entities.eN?
Saravanan, you chose "Varuvaai Mana Mohana"? kudos!
what next.. "aadum chidambaramO"?

Song of the Day: enakkena ErkanavE from paarthEn rasithEn.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/enakkena.rm
- Sung by Unnikrishnan and Harini. Music by Bharathwaj. The song appealed to me despite my visceral dislike of Unnikrishnan's singing. The song has wonderful interludes; Listening to mirudhangam/thavil/mandolin/ghatam in a recent song is a welcome change.
- Sounds like it is based on Hamsanandham for the most part.

Vairamuthu's lyrics is strange in places, with lines like "en uyirai kudikkum urimai unakkE unakkE". Someone (Udhaya?) mentioned here that VM has plotted a thousand ways of death in his lyrics.

An Amazing Song both Unnikrishnan & Harini have sung beautifully and Bharadwaj - Usage of FLUTE is his favourite and in this song also he had used effectively!!
Lyrics as mentioned is strange in some places!!
( in the same movie he had written Thinnadhe .. too)
Over all a very good song - applause for UK & Harini espeacially

Saravanan - thanks for aruLvadivE. As sk said, it is ages since I last listened it. This made me come out of my read-only mode. (mp3 irukka?)

Good one bb. The second interlude with mandolin is my favourite. Unfortunately the song wasnt featured in the movie and appeared briefly as a BGM piece. Bharadwaj hasnt quite delivered at this level consistently since then.Of late, his songs sound S.A. Rajkumarish and thats not good :-)

I used to think that "poonthErE chinna chinna" was a SG copy of a Hindi song that has "Jungulee" in it.

bb: Wonderful song. Regarding the raga reference is Hamsanandham some sort of rare raga (it definitely does not sound like Hamsanandhi or Hamsanadham). It sounds like a mix of various raagaas sprinkled liberally. I thought I heard some Ranjani bit too.

on: Fri May 21 01:47:22 EDT 2004
rajaG... indeed... it is a mixture of many ragams.
Enakkena erkanave and the next line sounds like keeravani
Oli sindhum and the next line - Kapi
Ennulle (the first time) - looks like keeravani again
The main Ennulle ennulle and the whole pallavi and the start of charanam (uyire uyire...) - takes hamsanaadham
the next line - kaadhal endra otrai nooldhaan...and the small aalaap after that is ranjani.
The interlude looks like vachasati to me.

Song of the Day: puthiya paravai from thendral varum theru.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/puthiya.rm
- Sung by Swarnalatha. Music by Ilayaraja. Thanks to Icarus for reminding me of this song, and to Palani Kumar for sending this rare number.
- Thendral varum theru was a big stinker in the mid '90s written and produced (and directed?) by lyricist Mu.Mehta. The film starred Ramesh Arvind and Kasturi. It was doomed to be a flop, what with IR singing a 'college youth' song for Charlie and Chinni Jayanth. This song, based on Keeravani, went unnoticed probably because of the fate of the film. It is a wonderful song, thanks to some sublime singing by Swarnalatha. It is in songs like this or "ennuLLE ennuLLE" or "naan Erikkarai" that she shows her mettle, rather than her more well-known dance numbers.
- Mu.Mehta's lyrics gives us refreshingly different lines:
koRkaiyin muththu
konjuthE kiNkiNik koththu
- Icarus has written a bit on the situation of the song here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RaayarKaapiKlub/message/7468 .

A Nice Song.. but picturized badly!!
this is Swarnalatha's Song!!
Other Song Thendral Varum theru by Mano & Minmini is a noteworthy song!!
Mu Metha burnt his fingers by Producing this FILM

bb, I don't think Metha directed the film- it was someone called Gaurimanohar who directed this dabacle.
Good song, though my pick would have been 'thendral varum theru'-- a lilting melody.

Swarnalatha, as long as she was given a song that doesnt sail often into the higher notes, was just DIVINE, the best lady voice in TFM in the last 15 years IMO. Unfortunately that one limitation became more pronounced as years went by. She had a very narrow window(89-94) when she was terrific and from after Karuthamma went downhill. Deva and the likes giving her some cheap songs didnt help either.
Listen to the pallavi of "maargazhi maasam" from Vietnam Colony, just wonderful. Striking contrast to that of Mano's rendition. Thanks to MSV for intro'ing SwarnaL and to IR for giving her a few memorable songs to render.
She was recently the judge in Jaya TV's ragamalika programme and struggled to sing the higher notes in even Maasi maasam aaLaana poNNU, a sad state of affairs.

Why? Did she have throat problems?
- From: vijay (@ 68.51.215.28)
on: Fri May 21 04:43:43 EDT 2004
bb, not anything I know of. I had always thought that it was her own voice range limitation. She had a tendency to go distinctly nasal when trying to reach higher notes(esp. after 95). Seeing her sing is even more painful, her face contorts and expresses visible exertion when singing those higher notes.
And on top of that, songs like Maaya machindra that demanded her to scream didnt help her cause.
But give her something like PoraaLe ponnuthaayi or margazhi maasam or EnnuLLE, you cant find someone better to render them. An enchanting and unique voice sadly lost amongst the dime-a-dozen singers who have flooded the TFM scene since the mid 90s. "Sandiyare Sandiyare" is an example of a recent song where she would have excelled although Shreya did do a pretty good job herself.
