Singer Srinivas :
In 1992, in Coimbatore, was when I went to see Maniratnam's Roja because it was a Maniratnam movie. Dreams of playback singing had taken a back seat; I was in Coimbatore and travelling and didn't know how to approach it now. I was just taken aback by the freshness of Roja's music. After a long time, I had bought a tamil film audio cassette. This new person, Rahman, had introduced so many singers; the re-entry of Sujatha, Hariharan (my favorite!), Minmini (God knows who she was at that time!) and Unnimenon. Immediately, I realized that this person has an attitude towards introducing new artists, his music sounds fresh and he was definitely here to stay! On one of my official trips to Chennai, I got hold of Rahman's address and went to see him directly. At that time, he was very accessible (he had just started working on Pudhiya Mugam). He conducted a voice test; I sang a Mehdi Hassan ghazal and he liked it. I mentioned that I lived in Coimbatore and he said that if I moved to Chennai, he might be able to work with me. By the time I came to Chennai in 1994-95, he had shot through the roof!.. The gates had become bigger at Rahman's place (laughs!). It was difficult to even get through to his office. With persistance and a little bit of luck, I was finally able to see him again. As soon as he saw me, he remembered. That's Rahman!.. He's human... and he's got GOD inside him as well! He slowly started giving me singing assignments.
The Different of ARR and Illai: (by srinivas)
How does Rahman usually go about doing a song? Does he tune it first or does he let you sing and improvise as the song progresses?
Rahman's approach is totally different which now many people have started following.(such as Harris Jeyaraj-the clone-said by me,dinesh) For example, Raja Sir has the whole thing in his mind from the very beginning. You don't have a doubt about what you should sing and you better not! (laughs). Two totally different schools of music. With Rahman, when you go in, nothing is ready. He just feeds in some basic chords. When you listen to them on your headphones, you are transported to some other world. Within two minutes, he creates a masterpiece of a loop. Those chords are just magic. You feel like singing so much! He incredibly motivates you when singing, which is also the reason why artists (singers and instrumentalists alike) give him the very best.

Donno why some fooools*&^%$ start these kind of tHREAD?? Very childish...Still trying all means to try and bring ARR to the level of IR. Sorry it is not possible, not at least for another 30 years. At the rate ARR works I think that is how long it will take for him to at least try and sniff at IR's level of achievements.

What a stupid statement.
ARR is way too high for IR to even dream.
Pathetic IR will always remain a poor man's Deva.
Por fans of IRwho have been cheated of real music.
Guess you will get what you deserve.

Mr.Dinesh,
There were a few singers who have sung countless songs for IR for years. Their names are
SP Balasubramaniam(heard of this guy??),
KJ Yesudas(give him a try!!),
KS Chitra(leave Vasundhara for a while and listen to her just for a change),
P Susheela(aint she ok dude?)
Vani Jayaram(not a bad sort, eh?),
Malaysia Vasudevan(give poor Udit a rest, shall we?),
Swarnalatha(hey Sadhana wants to go up north, let her go!)
Uma Ramanan,
Jency,
Jayachandran, Jolly Abraham, Mano
This bunch didnt cry about spending their careers with IR, did they? And their songs were listenable enough.
Dont use singers as an excuse to pull down other MDs and indirectly prop up your idol.

I think What Dinesh tries to underline is Rehman s respect for the creativity in another professional and how best he brings it out give a good product.
Now "Integrated approach" is the key word.Earlier you had core SW people implementing and people were taking it without choice. Now you need a Functional consultant who commands equal respect and you need specialists in Order Processing,Inventory,Fixed Assets,GL and finally the CRM specialist to give your implementation process a complete shape.Current topic isn t it?
Times have changed since the days of MSV and IR. Now from H Sridhar/Sivakumar to Ganga, Febi to Sivamani to Srinivasa murthy need to contribute to elevate the song. What more..these individuals are talented and they get the right compensation and right publicity for their contribution.Hence it is pleasant to work with Rehman where the singer ,apart from getting the right money gets the pride of contributing to a songs success.
Anybody can sing now .....well!isn t that a compliment to Rehman!10 years-135 films including dubbed/remade but 50 NEW SINGING TALENTS..isn t it wonderful?

It's indeed great to see the backstage heroes get their share of recognition like Sreedhar/Sivakumar/Sivamani(I discovered an old Outlook Jun 2K issue which has has interviews with many of ARR's troupe including Sivakumar. Hey, is Sivamani cheering the indians in SA currently??). Prob putting their names on the audio sleeve started with ARR's times, which is good.
But the jarring note is out of these 50 singing talents, why very few are plucked out of our numerous singing shows? How many can pronounce without flaws?
The recent Sapthaswarangal finals were a cracker. How many of them are gonna break into the big league now?? Going by past trends, not much.

Kenya is in the semis. That proves what?
Sapthswarnagal is certainly not a talent-spotting programme. It looks silly many a time and the participants look pretty mediocre.( They should say "Ava kitta pattu Kathunden!" to get the nod! )the programme in its 6 th year has got 2 names to its credit..Chinmayi and Karthik. But sources say Karthik was anyway there with his raw talents....so it leaves just one singer Chinmayi. The show is just pathetic and judges like Anuradha Suresh Krishnamurthy mislead the audience and the particiapnts further. Some the women participants were dressed for "Pen Paarkum padalam".I thought AVR would announce Baradwaja gothram, swati Natchatram,Vadamal,Domestically trained,NIIT course etc.
The song selection by the participants is another sore point.
I feel Rajageetham is better of the two.( We don t get the channel here.So i don t know its current status)
I would rate Sonu Nigam s programme much higher. The best heard joke was "All the HFM MDs watched Sa Re Ga Ma to decide on whom not to give a chance!"

MR, OISG, you said ARR had 135 films in 10 yaers and introduced 50 new singing talents. But, Can you say how mnay of the 50 singers have made GOOD Name in TFM --? Sujatha(re entry), Unni Menon, KArthik, Hariharan, Sadhana - you can count in your fingers.
And also , how many singers have good diction in any of the languages they sing?
Giving freedom is not a great thing. They should be good in their diction also. Mind it.

COROLLARY FOR THE TOPIC OF THIS THREAD
If an ARR song is good, the cerdit should go to
the singer.
If an IR song is good the credit should go to IR.

Just for the sake of different voice ARR introduced some new singers like Anupama and Febi. Have they lasted enough to stand on their own legs? Atleast, tell me how many songs Anupama has sung other than "Konjam Nilavu" in Thiruda Thiruda ?
Just printing the names of from violinist to percussoinist and from sound engineer to car driver's on the cover is not something great.
People buy an album more for the name of the MD than for the name of the peon who opened the door of the recording studio when the MD entered for recording.
Just becuase IR did not put these people's name on the cover does NOT mean that he does not recognize their talents.
What rubbish talk about ARR being great becuase he has printed H.Sridhar's name on the cover!!.

Excuse me...Cheenu...
we are not saying ARR great only because he shares his credit with eveyrone who have worked with him...but we says that because he IS GREAT.
anyway....why IR doesn't want to put his fellow troup members name? Greedy for credit?....
People deserve for their hardwork..and ARR...pays them with it......he doesn't keep it to himself...
do u know just by printing their name..on the CD cover..they got more recognised, given some status in community, appreciated their work by media, and increase their rice-bowl oppurtunity....
that shows ARR cares for his troup....which IR doesn't care abt at ALL!!!

Non-sense.
Without putting their name on the covers, many other MDs, not just IR, have given these technicians repeated chances and helped them grow. These people do contribute immensely, no doubt. They must first be given chance . ARR , given the rate he produces music , can hardly utilize them. If these people had depended on ARR for thier livelihood, they would have starved.
Because of IR's great throughput, many technicians have flourished. With ARR, all that they got was their names printed in point 8.

That's how ur thinking is.....
but no revealing their identity...they only work with that particular MD...but by revealing their names and job...they are more known and will be accessed by a lot more producers...that is how we came to know abt Ranjit Barot, SivaMani, Naveen...and others.....understand this bro...
think widely...dun "gundu chattikul, kuterai ottran"
