An effort to remember at least 1000 good, popular hits of IR. No, this thread is not simply to list them! Please give running serial number & each of the song should have some nice comments about them...and no repetitions please!

This is how it need to go:
s# 1. Annakkili onna theduthe (Annakkili, SJ):
What a lovely folk song! This (along with our #2 song)opened up the way for SJ to dominate TFM in IR's company! The lyric is decent & with Mann vasanai. The film was so, so -some even remarked that the song was nice when heard outside the theater:-)) Had all elements -innovation, pleasing instrumental usage...
s#2. Machchana paththeengala: Mesmerising prelude with SJ humming, some new percussion, catchy tune...took TN by the storm...pushed all HF out of TN...brought some new sounds...and with them, the would-be-maestro! Broke the ezhanthapazham record...
s#3. Sonthamillai, bandhamillai (Same film, PS): akkakkaaa enum geetham.... with melancholic cuckoo sound and some heart moving singing by PS, this song caught the TFM fans' attention & got hummed around everywhere! Hear it even today, your hair raises!
Come on IR admirers, take over!

Good show! you know who. But, people are going to pick any song at random. You should give criteria for the songs to make it here. Let me do it for you:
1. Tightly knit and full extended melody with a non-algorithmic type pallavi or anupallavi (example: Kaalai Paniyil Aaadum Malargal in Gayathri)
2. Any surprise elements like two different charanam (Yengum Niraindha Eyarkayin Yenna Sugamo)
3. Healthy and meaningul lyrics
4. Apt for the situation in the movie
Let us not get songs of Raja that have half done first stanzas even though the Pallavi is melodious but still is an algorithmic type song. Look for songs that really follow the melody traditions set by GR, MSV.

1. sandha kavigal paadidum manadhinil inba kanavugaley - from Metti - it elevates my mood instantly each time I listen to it with lovely violin interludes
2. thaam tha dheem tha aadum ullam paadum kaaviyam - by SJ and chorus from Pagalil or iravu is not so popular but a fantastic song by IR. The wavy pattern of the song's pallavi and charanam is the specialty.
3. maalai nera kaatrey mouna raagam yaeno unn kaadhal tholvi thaano unn aasai yaavum veenno - by SJ from Agal vilakku is a sorrowful song but touches the heart and manasai ennavo pannum
4. pooththa malligai kaathu nikkudhu munnaaley - by SJ from Namma ooru nalla ooru - is a very refreshing song. Just gives me 'out of this world ' feeling.
5. gyaan gyaan paadanum poovaal aadanum - by Jency from Poondhalir has rich violin interludes and has that vintage IR to cherish. Jency's araigurai tamil is the best thing in this song -gives that pep.
More later..

Your song # 4 - music Gangai Amaren.

Venkatesh,
Thanks for the info. But you know what, most of Gangai Amaran's songs are good and the reason is obvious......
Have you listened to 'Idhu oru Thodarkadhai' with some fantastic songs like 'Paadal naan paada unn paarvai thaan theda' by SPB, 'Hey vennila unn nenjiley' by SPB and SJ ?
Can some body tell me that it is not IR who had helped GA for these songs?

Giving s nos. 4-7 for the contribution by Sriram above (songs of metti, P O iravu, agal vilakku & poonthalir), let me continue:
s#8 Ilamai enum poonkatru (P O iravu, SPB&chorus):
Oh, what a song! Should come in the top ten of any DHIRF / DHSPBF! With a youthful tune to suit the mood, lovely background music and great interludes...the take off with lovely flute piece..mmmm...One of the very few that one can hear a 1000 times..
come on Rex, Raj & others...with some help, we can hit the 1000th number in a week's time..!

It's always the 2nd movie of any star that shoots him/her into the limelight, and hence must be handled with extreme and utmost care:
I just can't see how someone could miss this one of the best (probably the best in all aspects?) duets of IR. I'm giving it the number #0 to take it to the top, it's right place :))
s#0. Kannan Oru Kaik Kuzhandhai - PS and KJY at thier expressive best.
BTW, sabesan you have messed up with the count, you should have started with s#9, but you've actually started with s#6 and gone up to s#30, which should actually be s#33!
Here goes
s#34 - Adadada Maamarak KiliyE - jolly and singing by SJ with refreshing tune and interludes!
- From: karthi (@ 1cust247.tnt1.rantoul.il.da.uu.net)
on: Wed Jul 7 22:50:03 EDT 1999
And....er...isn't 1000 an exaggerated number? I think we can take up the first 100 best numbers:))

S# 35 Oru naal, unnodu oru naal (Uravadum nenjam) - first of SPB/SJ/IR combo & one of the very best. The interludes touch your innermost feelings! The lyric is also quite decent...`mangala naann vendum....'
s# 36 Nenachethellam nadakkappora (same film, same combo) - another song with more enthusiasm and one of the many that got etched into one's memories..simple yet powerful percussion..

Karthi!
Private firm'la romba naala work pannaradhala, high targets vachchu vachchu pazhakkamayiduchchu.. However, 1000, I feel, is not very high in DF as fellow DFers often claim listening to the 3000-4000 songs of IR and hence unable to reach our for his recent albums....NOM:-)))

# 53 Devadai, oru devadai (P K Bhairavan, SPB/SJ) - Some of the very best interludes ever! esp. the second interlude where the solo violin & the associates play great orchestration, capped with a marvellous flute piece!
#54 Engengo sellum (same combo, same film) - Oh! what a song! Great rhythm score (I'm too less knowledgeable to comment about it anyway, can just say it's sweet)! Each stanza starts with one aaaaah, followed with a tap on the disc of the drums! Makes your spirit soar!

#63 - Sugamo Aayiram - a PS number from ThunaiyiruppaL Meenakshi - this is a real sugamaana treat for the heart.
#64 - ALLith Thandha Bhoomi from Nandu - a MV number in which his voice is at its meloncholic, nostalgic best!
#65 - ManjaL Veiyyil from Nandu - an all time favourite from Uma Ramanan.
#66 - Aanandha Raagam from Panneer PushpangaL - another pleasant song from Uma Ramanan.
#67 - Poondhaliraada - a fast duet by SPB-SJ from Panneer PushpangaL too.

#68 - Chinnakkannan azhaikkiran - (BMK, Kavikkuyil)
An evergreen number with beautiful lyric & some enchanting singing -`avaL manam konda rakasiya ragaththaippadi...'. This must also have classical background (Does not `Classical IR' series have some mention of this song?)
#69 Kuyile, kavikkyile (SJ, same film)- One of the songs from the Phase-1 of IR-SJ combo which soar them to greater heights! SInce then the `peria kuyil' dominated TFM till the arrival of `chinnakkuyil'!
#70 Udhayam varukindrathu (SJ& same film, I think, if not others please correct)
A melancholic folk tune with very soft background..nostalgic song!
