Bhaskar:
Thank you for refreshing this great topic which was started by Amar. (The Thanksgiving weekend on the U.S. side decelerated all topics a bit.)
As you have observed, "nila" serves multiple purposes from a poetic point of view. karuththorumiththa kaadhalargaLin varNanaikkum, inba soozhnilaikkum, thoodhu selvadharkum, sugam/sogangaLai pagirndhu koLvadharkum pala vazhigaLil kavignargaL nilaavai payan paduththi irukkiraargaL. uyirum uNarvum illaadha indha nilavae uyirthudippum uNarchipperukkamum uLLa kaadhalukku kaviththuvam aLikkiradhu enbadhu sirandhadhu.
As promised in your Nila thread, let's discuss the first line of the Minsara Kanavu song.
vennilavae vennilavae vinnai thaandi varuvaayaa
Vennilaavukku vinnaiththavira vaeru veedaedhu? adhai vittu ennidam vandhu saervaaiyaa endru urimaiyoadu kaetpadhu oru amsam. maelae viNNilirukkum nee unakku keezhae maNNilirukkum ennidam varuvaayoa endru kaetpadhu innumoru amsam. vegu dhoorathilirikkum nee nerungi varuvaayaa endru kaetpadhu matrumoar amsam. aaga indha oru eLiya variyil, kaadhalan kaadhaliyidam "nee ennai vida uyarndhavaL/sirandhavaL, aanaal naan urimayodu unnai azhaikkiraen, namakkuL mana idaiveLi illaamal karuthorumikka mudiyumaa" endru kaetkiraan.
Even though the line appears to be simple in the context of this particular movie song, I think you can interpret that line this way as pure poetry. In fact, this first line and the last line are my favorites in this song.
Another favorite "Nila" song of mine is nilavae ennidam nerungaadhae from Ramu. The hero loses his wife in a fire, his son loses his speech due to that shock and they're staying with the heroine who of course falls for him. The hero is also romantically inclined toward the heroine, but has not fully recovered from his wife's death and has practical things on his mind like getting his son's speech faculties back.
oru pourNami iravil nithirayil vandhu nenjil kudi koNda uththamar yaaroadi endru naayaki naayakanai ninaithu urugi paada, adhai kaetta naayakan
nilavae ennidam nerungaadhae
nee ninaikkum idaththil naan illai
endru naayakiyai nilavaaga uruvagappaduthi menmaiyaaga echarikkiraan. enakku migavum piditha varigaL:
oomaiyin kanavai yaar arivaar
en uLLathin kadhavugaL yaar thirappaar
moodiya maegam kalaiyum munnae
nee paada vandhaayoa veNNilavae?
Another "nila" song I really like is kaaNa vandha kaatchi enna veLLi nilavae from Bhagyalakshmi. "nila paadaal pulanaaivaaLar" Keerthi, ungaLukku naeram irundhaal andha paattai patri sollungaLaen?

Ramki, thanks for the correction. In fact, I had my doubt, if this was from Sorgham or Raman Ethanai Ramanadi both of which I have not seen but decided( incorrectly ) on Sorgham.
Kanchana:
Neenga "Vennilavey Vennilavey Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya"vai arumaiyaaga alasi ezhuthiyinruntheergal, BUT, I don't know if I can agree with you totally on that from the context of the movie.
Neenga Padam Paartheergala?
Let me explain, Prabhudeva tries to get Kajol to love Arvindsamy and had arranged for Kajol to witness the goodness of Arvindsamy( he helps poor, dejected, rejected, homeless people ) in a remote place. But, we do know that Prabhudeva and Kajol are getting attracted to each other( it is not made obvious until this song situation ). But, at that point, Prabhudeva was genuinely working towards the union of Kajol with Arvindsamy.
At the rendezvous, he finds that Arvindsamy is running late for whatever reasons and he is getting impatient keeping Kajol there.
To pass the time or to distract Kajol, he starts singing at "Nila" and sings "Vennilavey Vennilavey, Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, Vilayaada Jhodi Thevai" and I think he meant to say, that Kajol whome he knows he loves internally, has been prearranged to be THE Jhodi for Arvindsamy and that he(PD) is "jhodiless" and so he asks "Nila" to become his jhodi and play with him.
PD intends some pun in relating "Nila" to "highly educated, high society girl, Kajol" and thus indirectly expresses his feelings but with utmost care to not let Kajol realize his inner feelings. In that sense, your interpretation is probably correct. But, in the context, he probably does not directly address the song to Kajol.
Thanakku thaaney thunn manakkuraiyai solli theerthukkolvathu pola, but fails, becuase, Kajol immediately finds out what he was singing about and responds. Prabhudeva probably did not realize that Kajol is also in love with him.

Sariyaanaa vaadham, great one. Very keen observation :))
Also to be noted is a line which says Naan ulagai rasikka vendum, naan un pondra pennoda
which he says after he gets the jodi. :))))
I guess these are all not what Vairamuthu thought for the situation given to him, but he casually wrote the words to the tune of ARR. These interpretations that we make are real fun :))))

Did you all listen to the Kayil midhakum kanava nee song in Rakshagan , It is a beautiful song from ARR. The music is real different and the tune is lilting. The singer Shreeni who is a newcomer sounds like a hybrid of Unni Krishnan and Hariharan. He has sung the song beautifully.
This song has certain Hi-Tech elements which I have highlighted below and also references to the moon in a very different manner.
Kanavaa...... Illai Kaatttraaaa ....
Kayil midhakkum kanavaa nee...
Kai kaal mulaittha kaattraa nee....
Kayil endhiyum kanakka villaiyeee ...
Could someone give me the meaning of this line, I did not getthe meaning of Kanakka. Kanakka does it mean shine ?
Muraiyai seidha silayaa neee....
Ippadi unnai endhi kondu Indira logam poi vidavaa
Vazhiyill konjam vali eduthaalummmmm
sandira tharaiyil paai idavaa
Here I am not sure what exactly vairamuthu is trying to say, is he saying that sandira logam is in between boologam and indira logam so that he can stop over at the sandira logam to take rest :))))
Next paragraph

Vairamuthu says there is weightlessness in the moon and water, but never thought that there was weightlessness in Kaadhal. What exactly is he trying to say I could not understand, is he referring a love failure when he observed the weightlessness in Love ?
Don't you all think that Vairamuthu has a lot of influence from the present space age and the things that are happenenig around ? He has used these words very effectively to fit into the tune, but I am not sure how much meaning it is conveying to the song. Here I am also referring to the other song in Rakshagan in which he has creatively used
the word armstong :)

naan padathai paarthappuramthaan appadi ezhudhinaen. maeloattamaa paarthaa neenga solradhu sari. aanaal, enakku ennamoa thannai ariyaamal, sub-conscious levellae irundhu indha paattu varra maadhiri pattadhu--adhanaalaethaan indha paattaiyae enakku pidikkum. aarambikkum poadhu rendu paerukkumae thanga real feelings pathi theriyaadhae!
I think that's the precise point behind this "Nila" topic: the critical role the moon plays in communication. What two people couldn't articulate to themselves or each other gets said to the moon, and in the process, real feelings come to the fore!
Now you know how I watch and process movies & songs in my head: "alasal" is automatic, not planned. :)))

Bhaskar:
I have not seen kaalamellaam kaadhal vaazhga either. From what you say, it sounds similar to kaadhal kottai?!
Since "Nila Paadal Expert" Keerthi hasn't shown up, I'm assuming he is very busy. So, let me outline the song from Bhagyalakshmi and the situation. The hero and the heroine have a child marriage and do not remember it. The hero falls in love with his college-mate who is the heroine's friend; the heroine is unaware of this and thinks they are just platonic friends. The hero & the second heroine go up to the terrace on a romantic full moon night (movies manage to have these full moons when necessary:)). Meanwhile the heroine discovers that her friend's male friend is her own husband, and runs upstairs to break the news, but stops dead on her tracks when she hears the second heroine singing this song to the hero.
In one sense, this is an ordinary lovesong sung playfully by the second heroine to the moon. At another level, it's a cruel song which tells the heroine she is an outsider who needs to forget her dreams and stay away. Feel for yourselves as you read the following verses:
kaaNa vandha kaatchi enna veLLi nilavae
kaNdu vitta koalam enna veLLi nilavae

Bhaskar:
Let me try to explain some of your questions on "Kaiyil Mithakkum Kanavey Nee" song from Ratchagan. I have not seen the movie but have heard the song.
Ganakka - is from the word "Ganam" = Weight and so
Hanakkavillai means Weightless
I presume, the Hero dreams of seeing the Heroine on his Palm as he sings this song,
Kaiyil Mithakkum Kanava Nee?
Kai Kaal Mulaitha Kaatraa Nee?
Kaiyil Yendhiyum Ganakkavillaiyey!
means,
Are you floating like a dream on my Palm?
Are you a Breeze with Hands and Legs?
Eventhough I am holding you on my Palm, My hands
don't feel your weight at all!
Dreams and Breeze are weightless - you don't ever feel the mass of these things.
The next question:
Ippadi unnai endhi kondu Indira logam poi vidavaa?
Vazhiyill konjam vali eduthaalummmmm chandira tharaiyil paai idavaa?
means:
Should I go away to the Indira Loagam carrying you like this?
If my hands ache on the way, can I place a mat on the floor of the Moon?
He claims the Moon to be a "Rest Area" along the way to the Indira Loagam. Since, he feels the land on the Moon is not smooth and soft enough for her, he would place a soft mat before placing her down so that his hands can rest too.
The next question:
Nilavilum porul edai izhakkum
Neerilum porul edai izhakkum
Kaadhallil edai izhakkum indru kandaen adi
Adhai kandu kondaen adi
Things do lose their weight on the Moon;
Things do lost their weight in the water;
Only today, I realized that things can also lose weight in Love!
(That is because, he sees her on his palm and yet, does not feel her weigth on his palm.He thinks that is because he is in LOVE)
Yes, Vairamuthu does introduce his knowledge about the current scientific facts into his songs which is a great asset.
Kanchana,
Irandu peirukkum ullukkulley yetho feelings towards each-other irukkungurathu puriyuthu. Kajol, for the reason that she wanted to be a "Nun", refused to or rather afraid of facing that fact. PD, for the reason that he was trying to help Arvindsamy get Kajol, refused to accept that fact.
So, at that situation, PD must have started singing in his subconscious mind a sing which without his knowledge, somehow relates to the same feeling that both are trying to avoid facing.
I like this song for the "kavithuvamana" way the love between the two sprouts out as well as the great choreography and of course, the music and the lyrics.
Anyway, let me give you the situation for the "Kaathal Desam" song "Thenraley Thenraley"
The heroine is very attached to the two Heros but it is not LOVE but the two Heros love her and they are confused about the Heroine's feeling for each of them.
One night, the heroine is unable to sleep and asks Hero1 to sing a song to help her sleep and he starts singing "Thenraley Thenraley" and she falls asleep after the first stanza and the Hero goes on to sing the next stanza expressing his love for her but she does not hear that.
Then at the end of the second stanza, the hero sees her sleeping and so leaves the room.
On the way down, he sees the Hero2 walking into the house.
Hero2 goes up to the room and the Heroine moves in her sleep and realizes that the song is over and so, requests the hero to continue singing in her subconscious mind and Hero2 immediately starts singing the next stanza and puts her back to sleep. Hero2 also expresses his feelings after she fell asleep.
The funny part is when we were watching this movie in a theater and the heroine asks hero2 to continue singing, there was a voice in the theater saying, "Aamaam, correctaa athey paattai ivanum paaduvaaney" and hero2 starts singing the same song in the same tune and the whole theater bursts out laughing.
ARR did change the singer from UK to Mano but would have made a lot more realistic if ARR had also changed the tune for the second hero within the same song.
Also, thanks for posting the situation for "Bhagyalakshmi". I know the song and the scene which I have seen in "Oliyum Oliyum" only but haven't yet seen the movie.
Keethi, enna vaathiyaarey, appappa "Asareeri" maathiri rendu vaarthai solvathodu aalaiyey kaanomey??!!!??
Sorry about this long posting.

Glad to see your response on vennilavae. I think we both like the song for similar reasons, incl my "sub-conscious" piece. I loved the choreography too--besides the lyrics it communicated a lot--very effective use of dance as a language.
Also, thank you for explaining the situation for thendralae, and sharing the theater comments--nalla joke! :)))

Thanks so much for explaining the meaning of the song Kayill midhakkum kanavaa nee.
Yesterday I happened to see the movie, and is exactly picturised the way you thought. Hero will be carrying the heroine in his hand and climbing a stairs :)
After seeing the movie and seeing your explanation now I understood the meaning of the song.
Thanks again Amar.

i'm reminded of this classic 'nila' from 'thirudi'
nilavu vanthu vaanaththaiyE thirudik kondathu
nIlak kaNNum unnazagaith thirudik kondathu
manathu konjjam uranggum pOthu kanavu vanthathu - athu
malarntha pOthu unnaip patri ninaivu vanthathu
vanaththai nilavu thirudiyathaai vithyaasamaana karpanai
(they don't make it like them anymore !)
the lyricist proceeds to inform on various other 'thiruttus'
nillaamal vantha mEgam kadalaith thirudi kondathu
mEgam thantha mazai athaiyO bUmi thirudi kondathu
peNNagap pirantha pErkaL uLLam thirudi koLvathu
innaaLil mattumalla ennaaLum uLLadhu
(i believe 'diamandu' could use some of the above)

Amar, Kanchana, Sathiya Keerthi Sir:
Nilavu paadalgalil, Enakku indha paadal migavum pidittha paadal.
Kannadhasan avargal ezhidiya paadal varigal arputhangalil idhuvum ondru endru ninaikiraen.
Even though this song seems to be self explanatory some of the lines I am unable to understand.
Ennal mudindha varai dissect seidhu irukkiraen veru edhavadhu interpretations irundhaal sollungal please.
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Yen nila enum nila En deviyin nila
Nee illadha naalellam Naan theindha vennila
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Vaan nilavai vida kaadhaliyin vaalibam nilavu pol irukiradhaam. Aval illadha naalellam ivar oru theidha vennilavaam I guess it should be half moon or new moon :)
Yen nila enum nila, En deviyin nila I could not understand this line.
Maaniladha oorile Saayal kannila
Maaniladha oorile Saayal kannila
Poovilladha mannile Jaadai pennilaa
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Deivam kallila, Oru thogaiyin sollila
Deivam kallila, Oru thogaiyin sollila
Ponnila pottila Punnagai mottila
Aval kaattum anbilaa, Inbam kattilaa
Aval dhegaak kattila
Eedilaa Kaadhalaa, Oodalaa Koodalaa
Aval meettum panbilaa
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Inghu kaadhaliyil pottu oru pon nilavu pol therigiradham, aaha enna karpanai.
Valzhkai Vazhiyilaa Oru mangaiyin Oliyila
Valzhkai Vazhiyilaa Oru mangaiyin Oliyila
Oorila naatilaa Aanadham veettilaa
Aval nenjin eetilaa
Sondham irulila Oru povaiyin arulila
Sondham irulila Oru povaiyin arulila
ENNila aasaigal Ennila kondadhaen
Adaichollvaai vennilaa
Indha line konjam kashtama irukku, ENNila means ennudaya kaadhali ennila means I am not sure what it can mean.
In total does the line say "Kaadhali ennavellam aasaigal vaithiruppalo adhai ennidam solluvaal" endru arthamm varum endru ninaikiraen.
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Yen nila enum nila En deviyin nila
Nee illadha naalellam Naan theindha vennila
Vaan nila nila alla Un vaalibam nila
Overall I guess Kannadhasan has excelled in this song. Also I guess MSV indha paadal varigalukku dhaan mettu pottu iruppar endru ninaikiraen, MSV has given an excellent to the lyric.

Bhaskar:
ennaal mudindha arththam:
yaen nila enum nila en devi innilaa
en kaadhali endra iniya nila irukkumpoadhu, innoru nilavu ennum nila edharku? He says the heroine is like a sweet moon herself, therefore why the other nila called nila?
eNNilaa aasaigaL en nila koNdadhaen
eNN means number, so eNNilaa aasaigal means countless desires. en nila is my moon.
Why did my nilaa have so many wishes or desires is the full meaning of the line.

Thanks for the meanings. It is really great. Isn't it amazing how Kannadhasan thinks and puts them both in a meaning full way and in a form that can be hummed for years together to come :)

Bhaskar & Kanchana,
Some corrections to that song, Enn Bhuthikku Yettiyavarai.
The song starts like this actually,
Vaan Nila Nila Alla, Unn Vaalibham Nila;
Vaan Nila Nila Alla, Unn Vaalibham Nila;
Thein Nila Yenum Nila Enn Deviyinnila
Neeyilaatha Naalellaam Naan Theintha Vennila!
Meaning:
Vaanil Ulla Nila Nilaavey Alla, Enn Kaathaliyin Vaalibhamey Unmaiyaana Nila;
Thein Poanra Iniyia Nila Yenru En Deviyaithaan Azhaikkamudiyum, Yeinenil Aval Oru Iniya Nila!
Nee Illaatha Naal Ovvonrilum Naan Oliyizhanthu Theinthu Poana Nilapoalathaan Vaazhgirein!
In the second line, you can say either as
"Thein Nila Yenum Nila Enn Deviyinnila"
(or)
"Thein Nila Yenum Nila Enn Deviyin Nila"
Deviyinnila = Devi + Innila = Enn Devi Oru Iniya Nila
(or)
Deviyinnila = Deviyin + Nila = Enn Deviyin Nila( I don't know how to interpret this. But, Pengalin Netriyai "Pirai Nila" yenru Varnippaargal. Athaivaithu, Enn Deviyin Netriyey Thein Poanra Nila yenru kavignar varnikkiraaro? )
"Ennila Aasaigal Enn Nila Kondathey, Athai Solvaai Pennila"
Bhaskar did give the correct meaning for this line and I disagree with Kanchana's meaning. Kanchana, you are right in saying "Ennila" as "Countless" but the whole line means,
"Kanakkatra Aasaigalai, Kanavugalai, Enn Kaathali Manathodu Kondullaaley, Avatrai, Pennilavey, Ennidam Kooraveindum"( Koorinaal, Antha Aasaigalai Naan Niraivetruvein, Kanavugalai Naan Nanavaakkuvein Yenru Kaathalan Kooraamal Koorugiraan! )
Yenna Keerthi, "Asareeri" vaarthaigal Keitkkumo?
