Folks..lets us not forget reviews. Yup music reviews are what makes or breaks serious music in the Americas/Europe. This should be part of the marketing/publicity campaign. The reviewer needs to be properly advised on the content.
I hope TIS makes use of people like Krishnaraj and enthusiasts like Muthu.

Dear 'kurumbu' and all,
Thanks to ALL your efforts, TiS has been completed and contrary to that 'gossip' you had posted, IIR is not conducting the world tour to finance TiS. The fact is TiS was made possible by the numerous fans and well-wishers all over the world and especially in USA and India, thanks to the untiring efforts of Fr.Jegath only.
Pl. watch for a first-hand update on the "COMPLETED" TiS at tis-usa.com site by tomorrow.
IIR has since returned to India following the succesful competion.
YIA!!

Hi Raja fans: Please read this, it will make your day. Stephen Schwartz about Raja & TiS:
http://www.stephenschwartz.com//ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=askstephen&Number=3252&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
Last night, at Sony Studios in New York City, I had the pleasure of hearing the almost-finished mix of Ilayaraaja's amazing work. It is unlike anything I've ever heard before, a stunning blend of Indian and Western music and instruments. I asked Mr. Raaja if this was something different for him too, and he said he had never done anything like this piece before. I don't know if anyone has. So I believe those of you looking forward to this are in for a great treat. The section to which I contributed English words is about twenty minutes long and dovetails back and forth between Mr. Raaja singing in Tamil and an American singer singing in English, plus there is a large and beautifully produced chorus. Mr. Raaja's orchestrations are superb, and the recording engineer, Richard King, has done a spectacular job sonically. I felt so very proud to be a small part of this project.
Mr. Raaja is a pleasure to work with, in answer to your question. He is a quiet and gentle personality, always smiling and encouraging, which can make one forget what a musical genius he is. He was extremely clear with me about what he wanted me to do in translating/paraphrasing the Tamil text, what portions of Manikka-Vacagar's poem he wished me to emphasize, and what the deeper meanings were. When he wanted revisions, he was again very clear and helpful as to what adjustments he felt needed to be made to accomplish his vision. The people Mr. Raaja surrounds himself with, at least those it was my pleasure to meet, are also unfailingly positive personalities. The entire project for me has been an enjoyable and fascinating experience from beginning to end, and I feel extremely lucky to have been asked by Mr. Raaja to participate.
I hope this answers some of your questions, and I believe I can promise you with confidence you are in for a major treat when you hear Thiruvasakam in Symphony.
Sincerely, Stephen Schwartz

A word of caution:
This venture will be (most probably) not a hip-hurrah music. Any marketing overkill will create a hype where not-so-much-discerning listeners may be pulled into buy...such people will discard immediately, giving poor reviews to create havoc / bad name in the market place. Hence there should not be any over-hype or creation of unnecessary expectation of `instant-gratification' stuff...no this will definitely not be McDonald...(can probably compare with `Blue Label':-))
Some kind of sober marketing is needed as this music WILL NEED TIME TO GROW on listeners...and ofcourse WILL STAY FOR A LONG TIME too...quick-buck approack won't help...

One will definitely be not looking for "boys" kind of music in TiS,I hope.
And, it is not a cine music type either.
I am sure all those who already know of TiS has some knowledge of Thiruvasakam and Ilayaraaja's musical prowess to suit any genre.
The only hype currently being created is what and how a Musical genius, who got his fame in film music and still made it into a totally different type of experience for even an ordinary cine-goer, is going to come up with in TiS.
It is going to be an experience and journey for each and everyone individually and then, who knows, may be the younger generation may get energized to bring out the name& fame of Tamil.
And, Sats, yes, there are a few surprises!!

is it possible to elucidate how TiS chose top colloborators like Schwartz, King and so on... How were these gentlemen identified and approached?
app_engine, have you heard the symphony yet?
plus, someone said it is 3.5 hrs music? If so, i think I can retire early. (already am ;--)

I am reading Mr. Schwartz' spontaneous response for maybe the 100th time. At one place, I am trying to read too much into it ...... "Mr. Raaja's orchestrations are superb, and the recording engineer, Richard King, has done a spectacular job sonically. I felt so very proud to be a small part of this project."
does this mean that Raaja was superb but King was spectacular and that Raaja was not spectacular ;--) and King was beyong Superb?!!!!!

SS was identified by IIR and approached by Fr.Jegath.
RK was identified and fixed by the US team.
BOTH WERE BY PAID BY YOU!![US funds]
It is not 3.5 hrs but a single Cd of 60 min. max.

p.s. I'm sorry. I am not app_engine!

SSSSAV, thank you. I can't stop reading the exhilirating response of Mr. Schwartz, some words such as: "and I feel extremely lucky to have been asked by Mr. Raaja to participate."
.....
"I felt so very proud to be a small part of this project." ...
tell a lot about Mr. Schwartz' enthusiasm and his liking of the whole project and admiration of IIR.
I have a belief that Mr. King has been exposed to a "totally new" Sonic experiences and has given his best.
As far as I am concerned, I can't believe this fantastic time I had monitoring this progress last 1 yr is already completed!!!! Nov. 6th?!!! Will remember this day.
Kamal turns 51 on Nov. 6 (is some tribute to this great supporter of IR?)
Thiruvacakam has 51 verses
A Star system like our solar System was discovered and named Star 51 recently.
And, the Sixth (5+1) sense from Shyamalan
My birthdate times 3=51!!!!
Then, the difference in digits in my age = 6
A lot of significance in the 6th dimension, I think!!!!
Phenomenal day for me! Nov. 6th

SSAV, is Bhavatharini singing in TIS or not? seekram sollunga bathila, tension thaangala :-)
As such, I hope IR's singing doesnt deter non-IR fans/neutral listeners from buying the album.
Also , reg. marketing and so on, I hope some work is done on the choice of CD title itself. "Thiruvasagam in symphony" might not be technically correct(according to IR himself) and this is important when sending fliers to music departments and colleges etc. An English equivalent for Thiruvasagam(if applicable) could be included in the CD cover. For many Westerners the word "Thiruvasagam" itself might be a tongue-twister :-)

hhhw, that is Minor 6th ;-)
..........."An English equivalent for Thiruvasagam(if applicable) could be included in the CD cover. For many Westerners the word "Thiruvasagam" itself might be a tongue-twister ;-) ............."""
Vijay, the above is an understatement in my experience... it greatly affects prospects, the name. they want to hear nothing greater than cow or booda or a sam for an entire name!!!!!
according to me we gotta stop looking at ourselves as if we are asking for employement from these guys. this is a composer giving joy to the hopeless without insulting them asking and accepting people for what they are and that it the intent of Tiruvacakam, so why shoud we change history to please someone else' tastes.
we are giving them something thru our own effort, let them take it if they want to, no one needs to force anything on anyone or ask them to buy it. For a change, let all alien landlords learn to tongue-twist! what do you say?
First of all, all this marketing recommendations are on the basis that we have to depend on foreign markets FIRST to make an impression on the Indian market. If that is the case, Indians won't achieve anything in life. India is a huge market, and I expect atleast 10 (I think 20 mill is possible in 2 months) million CDs to sell in India alone - with that money, TiS can package the CD for a foreign market with a fantastic TiS controlled outlet in the US, jsut like Oriental Records are selling IR film cds.
But, again NAME spelling is an issue: For eg: what is Ilaiyaraaja spelling going to be? Il or ILL or is it ILaiy or Ilaya or ILLAYA etc...
I think ILLAYARAAJA IS PERFECT, you know LL is LL not L in the south.
Likewise Tiruvacagam, is it Thiruvasagam or is it ThiruvaCakam or TiruvaCakam or Tiruvasagam etc... and MannikkaVacagar or Mannikavasagar, etc....
a lot of consistency may be achieved from now on for future productions - but, India is not about standardizing or consistency - it is all about the flow, the irregularities, irregulated environment, the energy, the society, which is what God meant for people, not binding people to chains with rules and unsaid fears. That is the foundation of the free-spirited Indian culture, arts and literature and that should be seen in a stylized way in the packaging of Tiruvacakam in Symphony album!!!!!

Bhavadhaa has sung an amazing piece with IIR in the album, vijay!! [I recall fondly of your valuable contribution for this project!]
As 'Gyan' rightly said it, let "Thiruvasakam by Ilaiyaraaja" be the trend setter in sticking to its original name and let the music decide its success, which it will!
And, again, as the SSSSAV are in Us, we were interested to hear the external marketing ideas but we agree with 'Gyan' again{!} that India is the center-piece in marketing strategies for this[tis!]
