Honestly I think India doesn't deserve someone talented and intelligent like AR Rahman. I think compared to his group of fans, there are double the amount of Deva and Raja fans. (Read that again, I'm not saying that there are no ARR Indian appreciators or fans)
Is it because Indians are unable to understand his style of music? Is it because deep inside, ghana and dhampakoothu are what they want?
If tomorrow, ARR decides to give up India music, I will be happy because he gets the recogniztion he deserves overseas and can concentrate on his western projects more. Read Andrew Lloyd Webber and Michael Jackson.

There is a saying in tamil "Pazhutha marame kalladi padum" and that is the case with ARR. His popularity is causing angst to some of the north and south movie goers whose interests lie with other MD's. Even if 1 rahman song is bad that gets magnified. ARR is smart enough to handle all this criticism.
It is not every day that a rahman or a ratnam come into being. And the reason that there work still recieves major attention is proof enough of their abilities.

ARR is just a genius. Here are examples of his versatility
1)His work with Andrew Lloyd Weber as u have mentioned
2)His songs in Roja
3)His use of Hindustani classical in "rAdhA kaisE na jalE" in Lagaan or "kismat se.." in puKar
4)His albums like VandE mAtaram
5)His version of "Jana Gana Mana" with so many maestroes!!!!

it is just because of indigestion of rahman's
extra ordinary talent. it is a fact that many
international scholars who appreaicated rahman
and still someone who do not accept him as a
real genius it is just nonsense.

Well when u talk abt Deva and Raja, u r talking about the Tamils. Well wat can I say, u just have to observe the kind of politicians they vote into power to know how clever they are.
But i still think ARR should hang around Indian music as afterall, it is his forte.

Ekam satyam, if you think Raja is gana & dappanguthu, i feel pity for you:-(
While I'm not commenting on ARR, fellows like you who stupidly drag Raja's name in issues like this prove that they don't deserve to hear music itself -let alone Raja or Rahman:-(

I don't know why u take in a negative way. Ekam Satyam was jus trying to say tat ARRs's following is not wide-spread as it could possibly be. And he's using Deva's and Raja's fan numbers as a benchmark. That's about it. I do not see him condemning Raja or Deva in this thread. So I don't see why IR fans have to be offended by this and make unfortunate remarks.

Why can't we just accept the concept of "Hall Of Fame"
have u ever heard Americans fighting with each other syaing that Scorpions are better than Metalica..or sort of things...
in our case..
just name all the superb, genius, great and creative MD's into our own Hall of Fame
starting with (chronologically ordered)
1) Viswanathan-Ramamorthy
2) Ilayaraja
3) ARRahman
I might missed out some of the legend MD's...but certainly...KR, YSR, Vidhyasagar, Baradwaj or Deva...is not in the list yet....cause they haven't conquer a decade for themselves...
so be rational, and post ur comments guys...

rehman is a good music director.. nothing can be possible without gods will and his consciousness of god in every moment has taken him this far and so long as he shows humility and composes music like a divine ritual all goodness will be bestowed upon him

Yes.ARR is fit for HINDI MUSIC only.Gone are the days of BURMANS. It is now the time for REMIXERS&INDIANISED POP MUSICIANS& Hi-Tech(long hair, ear ring.,etc).We difinitely DONT(!) deserve this world-class(!!!) MDs.

paran,
u r absolutely right man! we all should be happy that we have people like illayaraja, ARR and so on...lets be happy that we have the pleasure to hear their music and enjoy it...instead of critizing the whole time what this guy or that guy is doing wrong... for what are we doing this actually? does this critizing bring us pleasure to ur mind? do we feel ourself good when we say illayaraja or whoever is much, much better than ARR or whoever? that this guy is only copying while the other one is original and things like that? no friends...this only creates hatred...
well, but on the other side this whole forum wouldn't exist if one side wouldn't critize the other...imagine everyone having one opinion...hehe...impossible...
so it's a kind of vicious circle i guess...

hi raycas, nice to read ur posts after awhile. Well, in a way critics serve their purpose to. But not when it is stupid criticism which is influenced by personal motives. And i think all websites, magazines should have the ethics to only allow really qualified people to do any real critic work.
All said, ARR has made it clear b4 that tn is his home and he's not going to move anywhere else. So i hope he won't desert the indian music scene completely even if he undertakes occasional assignments overseas.

I can't understand why there is so much mud-slinging here at newtfmpage. I am truly a fan of both Ilayaraja and A R Rahman. I feel that their styles are different, i.e., Ilayaraja tries to take western music and polishes it with an Indian - or South Indian - feel, whereas A R Rahman does the opposite - he takes Indian music and tries to polish it with a Western music feel. They are both great talents, geniuses in their own way. Trying to compare them both is like trying to compare Pete Sampras with Michael Johnson, i.e. they are both undoubtedly great sportsmen, with extraordinary abilities, but they play different sports, so you can't compare them to each other. We can only wonder at their musical abilities.
Another thing I don't understand is why when someone wants to praise A R Rahman, they attack Ilayaraja and vice-versa. Is there any need for that? Ilayaraja and A R Rahman are musicians, not politicians!!!
What I think we would really enjoy is if people could write essays on these great musicians of TFM without unnecessarily attacking anyone. These essays should be understandable to everyone, not just musically knowledgeable people. All the best

If u love Ilayaraja....good for u..
and if u love ARR...it's also good for u..
if u love anyone else...still..it si good for u...
coz..no MD's come to ur doorstep...and give u their lates release....and force u to listen to it...
they release...and u buy at ur own will...
when we try to look for a good thing in a glass half filled with water..we will say 'Thank God..there is half glass of water left'...
but when we want to look at the bad point we will say 'This glass is half empty!!!'...
so...TFM is the glass and ARR, IR etc is the water in it..
and i would say..for Rahmans' case(with half of the glass filled)..'This amount of water is too little for the galss'...

Honestly I think India doesn't deserve someone talented and intelligent like AR Rahman. I think compared to his group of fans, there are double the amount of Deva and Raja fans
Satyam girl, the above statement of yours not only attacks Raja (unfortunately bracketed with Deva who never deserves such an elite company) but most admirers of TFM (& hence DFers here)...as if they'll appreciate non-intelligent stuff & only those living elsewhere / listening to the `kAttukkaththals of westerners' appreciate intelligent stuff...I don't know what to call you:-(
Look, westerners are good in science, engg., technology...no arguements on that. But art? morals? Who taught you that they are greater or `more intelligent' in these aspects? (All their spiritual sources are from Asia, including Holy Bible! & do you think ThiruvaLLuvar or Kambar is less inspired than Wordsworth or Shakespere?)
& You think Indian music is only dappAnguthu? Actually that is the Indian equivalent of western POP:-) Have you never heard a single Indian classical song? (I doubt whether you know anything about Thamizh film music at all...)
whynot, what about posting after some thinking and avoid jAlrA? ARR may be your idol but you need not agree that most Indian music lovers lack the intelligence needed to appreciate him. FYI, ARR is probably the best seller in India today (reportedly he gets paid max too, unfortunately by the same stupid Indians)
