S.P Bala the greatest??????

hi guys,

For me spb is the best bcos he is an all rounder/versatile and conquered tfm 4 a long time...But some are saying that upcoming singers like HH and UK already reached spb's stature and maybe better than him...What are your comments??? I am a fanatic fan of this great spb..so my fellow fanatics,plz e-mail me if you want to discuss more abt spb.....

  tv and other all sorts of media that
  provide us with all the news in the world,
  but still we get/read hindu (or express or dinathandhee) in the morning!...

  spb can be compared only with legends like the
  late Mohd. Rafi. HH and UK are no match to SPB
  in versatality, range, Shruti control.
  
  The type of music scores these days by ARR etc are more fornoisy rhythm and commercial reasons in which the Greats like SPB have no real scope
  HH does not control his voice frequency in high octaves. it sounds blarring. UK can sing at high
  pitch beyond Gha in higher octave.Both lack in
  Modulation. Further despite their classical background and training they are not able to maintain their Shruti.

  S.P.B' is great, 35,000songs in hand, his voice is deep manly beautiful voice, how can u compare Hari with him, Unni Krishnan is good, but these two are incompareable with S.P.B, no where near mate. S.P.B is legend like Moh Raffi, Lata Mangeskar, not even Yesudas is a match for .S.P.B. So please do not listen to those idiots who does not a jack about music. Do not you dare cmpare anyone with the greatest S.P.B, he is also in the geinus books of record!!!

  Yes its absolutely right, SPB can't be compared with anyother singers. Though he is not having proper training in Classical music he has control over Shruthi.

  it's such a demanding song, cos the melody ranges from the lower range to the highr octave range and s.p.b does it so easily.

  Yes, SPB is one of the legends which India has seen and witnessed. He has a terrific voice equipped with good modulation and a good style. One person said earlier that he cannot be compared with Yesudas. I think Yesudas is also very talented and is also one of the greats. What do you guys think ??. But the greatest IMO will always be Rafi Sahab. He had a voice which will NEVER be matched in this world by anyone to come. His voice was a gift from God to this world. Nobody can even dare touch his range and his versatility. SPB does have versatility, but Rafi sang all type of songs and he went inside the character himself. That i have seen nobody do. The ability to change his voice for the actor. Both SPB and Yesudas admire Rafi and they both take him as their idol. SPB is also an excellent singer and certainly one of the best TFM has ever seen. The type of music being churned out these days with techno crap is not worth the time for his talents .

  i do not find spb's voice a single percent inferior to rafi's.spb's idol may be rafi, that is different.even sachin's idol is sunil. but sachin is more talented. Also spb is still numero uno till today, unfinished innings for the past 35 years and his voice is just like 35 year old man.also a great span which rafi did not have. also rafi was left way behind by kishor kumar who was much more versatile than rafi.

  I love SPB - however your comments on rafi are wrong. Kishore was not even 1/100th as versatile as rafi. Ever herad even a single ghazal,bhajan,classical song,thumri or philosophicla song by Kishore. On the other had Rafi could sing rock-n-roll and pop very effortlessly. Heard of Shammi Kapoor songs by Rafi? And about range? Oh no -rafi had a much better range than Kishore - listen to Rafi in Baiju Bawra. Kishore was no person for those.
  
  As far as SPB is concerned, it is senseless comparing Rafi and SPB. Both were olympian in their own fields. In every sense, NI and SI film music is different. So why a silly comparison like this. Both SPB and Rafi have tremendous control over the shruti. Both are real real legends!!!

  you must be out of your mind to say that kishore was more versatie than rafi. Are you blind or are you just drunk (no offence). There is no way KK could have sung a quarter of the songs rafi had sung. Rafi sang all types of songs and as lv said rock and roll and pop so effortlessly. How can you compare KK with rafi. It's like comparing gold with tar. SPb is a good singer in his own right but cannot be compared to rafi. Rafi is on a higher level than all other singer. One guy said oh SPB has sung in hindi and many other languages. rafi had also sung in many other languages as well !!. Go hear the Shammi Kapoor songs as lv pointed out. who can sing like that !!!. No body but rafi. Rafi's range would murder KK's range anyday. No singer in India can match up to rafi's range. I haven't heard any singer in India or for that matter in this world having a higher range than rafi. rafi was right there wherever kishore was in the seventies and he always outshined KK. How can you compare their voices !!. This is all rubbish comparing KK to Rafi or for that matter anyone to Rafi !!

  I love SPB but his Hindi songs are very very bad.
  The accent problem!!!! And besides the Hindi songs other than the one he sang for Naushad are not good at all!
  And rafi DID sing in Kannada ( besides Gujrathi,Marathi,Bengali,Oriya,Assamese ).

  in a recent article in the hindu, it was stated that with the advent of kishore kumar, rafi receded and kishore had a greater span than rafi. also kishore songs in aradhana,abhimaan,kati patang,dushman,andaz etc and several others were really great. If you regrd rafi at a very much higher level , that might be your view. but our argument is who is great , rafi or spb. just go through the channels like teja,ushe,etv,scv,etc and you can for yourself see how versatile his singing is. also as one viewer has corrrectly pointed , singing south indian film songs is totally differnt from north indian film songs as the languages down south are dravidian languages which are quitedifferent from hindi and other indo-aryan languages. the ni languages aids singing to a great extent because there are soft on the ears. dravidian languages though beautiful are very much difficult to sing and establishing superiority over those languages and singing with versatility,ease,modulation is very difficult.also the voice of spb is god's gift which can never be matched for years to come. even spb on rebirth cannot have such a voice.even in the recent star movie, spb voice just looked as if is singing for illayaraja in the early 80's. with the advent of lot of singers like hariharn,unnikrishnan,etc spb's voice among them as well as amongst past several singers remains very tall.

  ANSWER the questions I asked u - name a SINGLE classical song,bhajan,ghazal,thumri,good folk song,philosophical song by Kishore. As far as span, Kishore could not have done Man Tarapat Haridarshan ko aaj and 'ae duniya ke rakhwaale'. Comparing Kishore to SPB and Rafi is atrocious.

  Sorry, this is not correct at all. The rather average songs of Kishore in Aradhana and Kati Patang do NOT stand anywhere near Rafis. This is not a subjective but a very objective statement I am making.As far as Kishores span being as good (or worse still - greater!!!!) thats a real joke. Kishore did not have the ability of subtle Urdu diction (or Sanskrit diction) also. He is far behind KJY,SPB,RAFI.
  also - there is NO sense comparing Rafi and SPB with each other. Rafi was always the favourite of ALL mds except for RDB. That thing about Rafi declining after Aradhan is wrong.

  Yes and the sSAME is applicable to Rafi too. Rafis voice is AS divine/versatile as SPBs. SPB is my favourite singer along with Rafi.
  
  and about Kishore taking over Rafi, it was only for a short time. Jaidev preferred Yesudas and Rafi and even Hariharan for his semiclassicals over Kishore. Thank God!!! Even IR took Suresh Wadkar for his Hindi songs as he had a better classical base than Kishore. And Salil C too switched to KJY. Even RDB never went to Kishore for his ghazals/classicals or even pure rock-n-roll. It was Rafi in Teesri Manzil and it was Rafi for the Kalavati based qawwali 'Hum kisise kum nahin' and it was Rafi for the Kedar based song 'Pal do pal ka saath hamara'.
  
  I thinnk u are insulting both SPB and Rafi and even KJY by bringing Kishore in their comparsion. I honestly feel that Kishore's voice was good only upto Jewel Thief. I cannot stand those rather mediocre pieces he did for RDB and those awful Rajesh Khanna, Shatrugan,Amitabh .... bla bla bla type of songs. Kishore was more hype than substance. I can show atleast 15 genres of music that Rafi and SPB touched by Kishore could not have.

  I don't know what you are saying. How can you compare KK with Rafi. The songs of abhimaan, kati patang, and many other RDB movies were awful to say the least. KK only got his big break thanks to RDB for Aradhna, because SDB fell sick after recording two songs with Rafi. Kishore's songs for Rajesh Khanna are awful as well. Rafi fitted rajesh Khanna more than Koshore did. In fact, rafi was a vocal match for any hero, even amitabh. And though RDB did use kishore extensively, he always had atleast one song in many of his movies sung by rafi, and that would be the song which would become a hit and outshine all the KK songs in the movie. IMAGINE THAT !!. I can give u examples :
  
  Yaadon ki baraat - Churaliya hai
  Abdullah - Maine poocha chand se
  Hum kisi se kum nahin (rafi basically outshone KK the whole movie)
  Caravan (rafi again outshone KK)
  Pyar ka mausam - Ni sultana re (with lata) and YES
  tum bin jaoun ka ha ( rafi did outshine kk here and not the other way around. Just listen to KK's version it sounds as if his voice is being run over by a car. He CAN'T even sing the high notes properly. If rafi had sung the sad version, he would have KILLED the high notes and brought it to a whole new level. But anyways, rafi's version which was the happy one was still better)
  
  There are so many other examples which if you want i can list them for you. I don't know what RDB liked in KK's voice. I think he should have used rafi more than he did. How can you compare the songs that kishore has sang in his career to rafi's. Rafi sang all types of songs whereas MD's only gave Kishore songs which he could sing which were simple. These articles which say that kishore is better than rafi is just RUBBISH and trying to propogand KK who is far less in calibre to Rafi. Rafi was a favourite with all MD's and kishore wasn't. Why do you think all big names like SJ, LP, SDB, MM, Naushad, Jaidev, KA all used rafi more than kishore. RDB even used rafi alot in his career. And Rafi did not decline after aradhna, he was always there throughout the seventies and often outshone KK.
  
  You can also not compare SPB with Rafi. So what if south indian languages are hard to sing in. Rafi sang in south indian languages as well. North indian languages such as hindi/urdu are soft to the ear as you pointed out and are so beautiful that his voice and his diction fitted perfect for it. Even SPB sang hindi songs which were not bad. It was second language all throughout school as i once read in his interview. SPB established superiority over those languages because he sung in them more often. If rafi had sung in SI languages more often he too would have done an excellent job because as it is his SI language songs are good too. If SPB had sung in hindi/urdu more often i think he would have done pretty well even with his accent.

  Rafi's voice was the one no one could match. It was like god's voice and that is the voice which will never be matched by anyone including SPB.
  
  Rafi's versatality cannot be matched by anyone including SPB. SPB may have sung a wide range of songs but Rafi is truly more versatile than him. It is said that when SPB used to go to work on his bicycle and when he would hear a rafi song being played in the shop or market, he would listen and wait until the song is over then continue his journey. Everyone today misses rafi and tries to sing his songs to the best of their abilities. rafi was a gift to this world. Why do you think more than 20,000 people or so followed his grave to it's burial place. There has never been anything like that for an icon of that staure.
