A.R.Rahman's Bombay Dreams is continuing its dream run in London's west end by grossing over £10 million. So the musical with a budget of £4.5million has so far grossed more than double its expenditure.
And now its been confirmed that Bombay Dreams is being taken to USA(Broadway),Canada(Toronto) etc.
Lets celebrate this great success story by a humble man from Chennai, the Mozart of Chennai, A.R.Rahman.
And one man for whom no words of praise are enough is Andrew Lloyd Webber, who introduced this music genius from Chennai to the whole world.
Lets discuss the universal conquest of Bombay Dreams in this thread.

PLAY BOMBAY DREAMS COULD BE A HUGE HIT IN TORONTO
Audiences are flocking to London's West End to see the outlandish and flamboyant Bombay Dreams.
What's revolutionary about the show is that it's the first big Bollywood musical to reach the stage in the western world, and it is drawing crowds of South Asians who don't usually go to the theatre. Given the nature of the show and the audience and the population of Canada's showbiz capital, Bombay Dreams could be a huge hit in Toronto.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is involved in producing the show. The score is composed by A.R. Rahman, celebrated in India for his film music

Bombay Dreams Confirmed For Broadway
by Kenneth Jones
Producer Andrew Lloyd Webber announced Sept. 30 that his production of the London musical, Bombay Dreams, a fantasia that incorporates lavish musical sequences worthy of India's so-called Bollywood films, will open on Broadway in the spring of 2004.
Casting and a theatre are to be announced.
"[Composer] A R Rahman is nothing short of a melodic genius," Lloyd Webber said in a statement from London. "It has been thrilling to watch London theatergoers embrace Bombay Dreams with such fervor. Bringing this talent and this musical to Broadway brings my own dreams for this project full-circle."

Webber’s Bombay (Queenly) Dreams come true: If Lord Webber is whistling AR Rahman’s Chaiya Chaiya in his bath these days one should not be too surprised. Anyone else would have felt as
much elated. The Queen herself went for a Royal Command performance of his mega musical Bombay Dreams on 31st October evening at Victoria Apollo Theatre in West End.
The proceeds from a full house ( 2200 capacity) of the special show will be donated to Gujarat Relief Fund. Sources say she enjoyed the colour, the melody and the dresses of dancers. The Queen met the cast and attended a special after-show reception.
Special chaat supplied by Chaat House in Southall of 30 years vintage was part of the menu. It is not yet known whether the Royal guest of honour tried the delicious Indian savoury, which other television and cocktail circuit celebrities relished without wiping their eyes.

Honestly, I can't even understand what is musical about those two mediocre numbers, Shakalaka and Chaiyya, Chaiyya. Is it because these are songs fell like best enjoyed in Goa by western tourists flocking there to relish hashish and exploit children? Sorry for this comment, honestly I feel this musical appreciation is Western condescension of the most demeaning order.
Webber is plain exploitative of the "commercial" value of Rahman, and has cleverly given major attention to distractions like the sets, women and wet sarees. Plus, 500 million young Indians with disposable income in the next decade is definitely eyepopping market potential when the value systems thre will sink to the current Britney spears levels.
It only shows Western society can get threatened by real "artistic" stuff from India, they have been. Otherwise how do you explain all the greatest sculptural works of all time (particularly, from the Cholas dynasty) stolen and hidden in rare museum exhibitions and priveate collections.
Indians, wake up. Look at IR, spending his own money with the help of fans to bring forth a fusion kind of Symphony, a work of such complexity, that I really hope IR will not hesitate to release it atleast even if there is no audience today to appreciate creative genius. You think any fans can do that for Rahman or even Jackson?!!!

Errr.... mr. kalaam
I personally think that the 'begging with a bowl' activities done by IR and some of his fans are too sickening and demeaning of his highest caliber.
sorry to say this but as a huge IR fan I am totally disappointed! I am a member in IR yahoogroup but the donations email are driving me nuts.
I want to know how much IR has donated to this. Ofcourse accounting that he has cancelled any salary that he maybe owed.

"Indians, wake up. Look at IR, spending his own money with the help of fans to bring forth a fusion kind of Symphony"
We are wide awake. Perhaps you are a confused fanatic. An artist invests in his own ventures only for either of two reasons. Either he wants all the profit or he hasnt any other sponsors.
If you will recall, some time ago, before Rahman and others ventured into TFM, Ilayaraja had begun to demand extraordinary sums for a score. Please note, that I am not commenting on the quality of music delivered. So stop being a foolish fanatic and enjoy his (IRs) music. He is no more a saint that I. I work for money and so does he.
"Webber is plain exploitative of the "commercial" value of Rahman"
He never claimed otherwise. He too is a business man. What do you think other MDs did when they used IR? Social service??

Just a question..i assume the TiS project become a hit..and sold 250 million copies world wide...where will the profit go to?...
and why can't IR simply fund his own project...he has been working for 25 years, YSR doing good, KR doing ok, Bava doing ok....they don't have the money?...yeaaaaaa rite?....
and one more thing...did Kamal, Bala and Balu Mahendra who talks so much abt IR....donated anything as of now?...i know Kamal donates a lot to poor children...but why not to his beloved MD?...

Kaalam,
What is it that made you feel Chaiyya Chaiyya and Shakalaka Baby are mediocre numbers? The mere "Rahman" factor? Looks like it from what you had to say further. If you had expected some soul stirring music in these, then I understand you disappointment! They are foot tapping numbers except for those whu have "nailed" their stand on Rahman. Pure classical melodies alone does not constitue music.
Exploiting a person's commercial value is what business is all about. Webber isn't a campaigner who would strive for the success of Rahman. He is a businessman who looks forward to utlise Rahman and make money. I don't think any compromise has been made on the quality of music. This I say, because I feel you would touch those areas in your reply!
Distractions like sets, women etc etc. They are there to spice up the show. If you notice, you would find that the music is getting more acclaim than the things which you mentioned. That just shows that people find something more attractive than these "distractions". They, no doubt, add to the commercial value. But at the same time, Webber is not doing it to compromise on the music which he has got.
"Look at IR, spending his own money with the help of fans to bring forth a fusion kind of Symphony, a work of such complexity,"
Donations..fine. Though some may say it is demeaning, it is finally the result that matters and if the money is being spent towards a definitive cause rather than a hope, I have no complaints.
"that I really hope IR will not hesitate to release it atleast even if there is no audience today to appreciate creative genius."
I really don't understand this. You have started appreciating IR for his "creative genius" in the Symphony? When you can go gaga over something that you are yet to witness, what is it that you find disturbing when we, Rahman fans, are enjoying some spicy music? I am not debating the genius of IR here. Just trying to suggest that if you feel that us guys enjoying Bombay Dreams is wrong, then, you enjoying the Symphony ALREADY is definitely wrong!
