Ilaiyaraja and the bass guitar!
Dear All, Im a newbie to this wonderful site. Ive just been going through the old IR threads, especially 'Ilaiyaraja and the guitar' and the like. I was fascniated by the way ppl had discussed these topics (Mux, Kanchana and Kitcha ... hats Off!) I am absolutely bowled out by IRs use of the bass guitar in many many songs, like Ninnukori, POOgatru PudhirAnathu and so on. Im planning to learn the acoustic guitar and I thought Ilaiyaraja's love for the bass guitar shopuld be discussed more in detail. Please post ur comments!

my fav bass guitar parts
enna saththam intha neram
poongatru puthithanathu
Oru kili uruguthu
Poonthalir aada ponmalar sooda
Modhal Mariyadhai,Eera Vizhi kaaviyangal,Agni Natchathiram songs
Most of the Ordinary listeners never note the bass parts.I was one among them before visitng newtfmpage. Its tough to concentrate on the bass parts when the tune and the primary instruments rule the song.Old timer Srinath used to say Bass needs to be felt than heard.:-)
Increase the bass in your audio system to get more bass effect.:-)

The starting piece in 'Netru Indha neeram' from Tik Tik Tik is mind blowing. It starts with a peppy pace and slows & allows the violins to take over.

Its just got me...what a genius Illayaraja was...may be I wasn't mature enough to appreciate his genius. Now when I listen to his works, I feel most of today's music directors are amatuers - playing with their kits.

Guys,
am a bassist here in dallas and i play for a rock band here. But i grew up listening to raaja's songs back at home.
The best composition i think is
"pothi vecha malligai mottu"
it is a folk song with folk percussion in it n all...but mann what an arpeegio raaja has composed.excellent.
Am thinking of picking it up,

Iam sure many of you would have noted the
bass in these S.Janaki songs -
"Kannan vandhu paadugiraan kaalamellaam" ,
"Paadavaa un paadalai",
"Pala machham konda machaan".
Aren't they quite appealing?

What about the following?
ennakku piditha paadal - julie ganapathy
oru kiliyin thanimayile
I somehow feel, in many songs he composes some melodic pieces in bass which I feel is somewhat odd.
