6 Songs : Mind Blowing!!

Simply mind-blowing
November 20
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”
Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.
Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

It’s a matter of personal preference to accept certain knack of story telling.
Narrating the leads in 3 individual segments and taking the story further is done coherently but i didn’t relish it much. I felt it eludes the viewer a simple pleasure of enjoying contrasting lifestyles and attitudes simultaneously.
Its a personal preference and we can’t throw brickbats at the director, I prefer the conventional knitted style of events if the script needs more than one hero.
If ppl of TN don't have a problem about this, the movie will surely break-even.
And would break-even quickly for the star cast and their performances.

Sundevil...I saw the film in the cinemas in Sydney. Again....I should iterate that I have a certain level of expectation when it comes to cinematography in mani films....his movies used to set the standards when it comes to photography.
These days...most of the films have impressive cinematography. So in a relative sense....it was nothing much.
By the way Ravi K Chandran himself has admitted that he enjoyed filming Yuva in Calcutta. Don't mix them up....they are two different films.

Aishu,
kidaikala! :( Most probably 26th 27th thaan paarpen.
Kanna,
I havent seen AE. Nor have i seen Yuva. But jus lookin at the promos made me think they've tried something different (Let's not start w/ the issue of promos being done by agencies and that they edit the scenes a lot, the basic essence of the scene remains)... I mean to say, while each of them were being portrayed on screen, the camera seemed to reflect their attitude. And when i read all that Ravi K Chandran had done in the film, i was impressed already. A couple of my friends have seen the film, and they had one thing to say for sure.. that the cinematography was amazing.
And agreed, Mani's way way ahead of others when it comes to Visual narration. But what more do u expect from him? A Zoom shot from the moon?!

I saw the movie, but it simply fails to connect with the viewer! I was just sitting there and I wasn't excited one bit! The only scene that was appreciative was the climax fight on a busy road.
That was great. The problem was the narration.

I mean, whenever I catch the trailor, it normally follows Arul, Gilli, and Peralagan... hit films in their own right.
But when AE comes on air, u cant help but notice the extra colours that ur TV, all of a sudden, seems capable of displaying! :) I admit I'm too huge a fan of MR to call myself unbiased, but the sheer quality, the details and the aesthetics blew me away.

Curse u should really really see this film and discuss about it. You may see these 'new' colors on your TV watching the trailor but when you go sit down and watch it you'll be like what....???

saw AE lat night. a very good film.period. very entertaining. The way it resolves itself at the end mught be a litlle bit unconvinving but then thats the inherent problem when a film turns political..the characters were realistic..screenplay was fast moving. as for the cinematogrpahy i shared the view of some here during the first half..but then the second half blows you away..not in the way a 64-camera shankar film shot will blow you!!(if it does!:))but just the way the camera pulls you into the action..along with some adventerous editing that could takes the risk of falling into being jerky and chaotic, pumps in high doses of energy into the frames that lights up like a hundred firecrackers..you can see a very good mix of close up expressions and action shots, dispersed evenly through the action scenes to keep you engrossed and blow your mind simultaenously..
most importatnly, it is a big departure from the usual maniratnam way of movie making/story telling..no drawn out silences, no punch dialogues, no slow narrative to build the characters.Getting straight to the point and telling us backstories and setting up the moral thread and the theme simulatneously as things are happening, the movie is set in a frenetic pace and it is amazing how the script and director manages to get everything done. This disembarkation from the usual style might be the reason for the apparent "disappointment" of the 'DIEHARD MANI FANS". But then, as a Maniratnam fan myself, I am glad he did this experimentation. Thats exactly what made me a fan of his. I personally dont expect another agninakshathram or roja or even nayakan everytime. I want something newer. Fresh. I am also so glad that it is not a well disguised remake of "city OF GOD", though in one action sequence it does tips it hat to that instant brazillian classic. Kudos to Mani for not lazing and sticking to formula, or even sticking to his own inventive formula but for living out of his skin, so to say, and having dared to go, cinematicaly, where he hasnt before.
Loved the movie. Absolutely.

I too thought the same when some sights reacted saying it as a dissappointment..Ratnam's movies are expected with a stereotypic Mani style narrative...i have sometimes thought that it is a serious handicap...I think Mani too has realised it....That's nice.

thematrix1298,
In case u still havent figured out, I was laying delicate emphasis on the quality of the visuals. And believe me, I'm really lookin fwd to "go sit down and watch it", but some thing tells me i'll be like "wow" than "what". :) I might risk saying I understand movies. :)
The beauty of Mani's films are that he makes even the most far-fetched theme believable and an ordinary theme, interesting. The power of a good observer. You dont have ppl standing and gaping at what a single character is doing (in his movies), there's always something happening even as the lead actors go about their jobs. And I do believe he has the ability to carry the film jus w/ "moments", even if the story doesnt have a strong plot to brag about.
