Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Lekha, the Azhagae songs did not win on the National level. I am not sure - but they may have been honoured by the Tamil Nadu State Awards.

AVR - the music for BhajanAmrit is by Pt. Jwala Prasad. I am not familiar with the name (but that doesn't mean anything, really.) Are you? BA is also an album of solos - Meera, Kabir and Soordas kirtans/bhajans.

There was an interesting "nightclub" sort of song by VJ from the the film Shankarlal. How did that one go, NeelD/Ramki/Priya/GR/AVR...others?

Kaathal Vaibhogame-is Janaki and SPB duet in the movie suvarillatha chitirangal.
Thanks for the info. about Hey giridhare. I really enjoyed listening to the song. I really don't understand why such a talented singer has been overlooked for so long?? I guess there are no logical ans.

Thanks, Balaji. Yes it was that Bhagyaraj/Sumathi movie - I can see it in front of my eyes now!! After I had posted the message it came to me that it was a SJ-SPB duet. Music was by Gangai Amaran, right?
Yes, there is no logical explanation for any of the stuff that is happening in TFM today. VJ, I am sure, is very happy for all her accomplishments, as the loss is certainly not hers.

An interesting comparison with Hey Giridharane (which is pretty recent) is another recent song by IR (Sadhana Sargam, I believe the singer is) from Azhagi: Paatu Cholli Paada Cholli...
What makes SS such a hot commodity in TFM currently, when VJ sounds just as fresh (if not better), and her tamil is impeccable? Yaarukku theriyum? IR-ukkey velichcham!

Was Panam Penn Pasam a Vadivukarasi movie? She had a spate of releases in the early 80s (Kanni Paruvathile, Kannil Theriyum Kadhaigal, Marumagale Vazgha etc.) Was Ravichandran also in that movie? Or am I like totally out of (memory) depth here? Ramki?

Naaz,
Suvar illAtha ciththirangkal reminded me of S.Varalaskhmi (love her voice, she sings a two line piece in that movie). So I looked around to find her song from Guna. Listen to "unnai naan aRivEn". Tell me who sings the folk part of the medley.

The Gitagovindam album has music by someone called Prafullakhar. Only the pakhawaj accompaniment is by Kelucharan Mahapatra.
Incidentally, I've been transferring VJ (non-film) tapes onto CDs. In case any of you're interested, I'm happy to mail you the original tapes. I'll post a non-film discography (what I have) soon - principally tamil devotionals, sanskrit stotrams, and bhajans.

Avr, So sorry to not do you your long requested favor. But please bear with me - things are a bit topsy turvy around here (the house situation) and I should be out of all this hungama soon...I promise to send you a detailed message on the Gita Govindam allbum (and other songs by VJ) as soon as I have a good stretch of time to myself. I will keep my word. And I apologise once again.

Hi Kik,
Prafulla Kar is a well-known Oriya MD. He is the one who composed the "Tuppuru Tuppuru" song which made VJ a household name in Orissa. Kelucharan Mahapatra on the pakhawaj - is part of the whole "ethos" of that album. He is an accomplished musician (besides being a legendary dancer/guru).
A favor/request/info: How do you transfer tapes to CD? I have ALL of VJ's non-film albums (tamil, hindi, sanskrit, urdu, bhraj etc - devotionals/geets/ghazals/bhakti padalgal)...and would really like to have them on CD. Can you guide me/instruct me - thru/on the process? Or do I need some real hi-tech gizmos to accomplish the task? I have some techie friends who might be of help...Can you give me some info, please? I'd appreciate that greatly.

Neel D,
Thanks a ton! I hadn't heard that song "Inimaiyanathu" in such a long, long time! It is such a simple and well sung tune. VJ/SPB team does have some real stellar songs together. Was the music for that song by MSV?
Just an aside: I have noticed that VJ's name is (conveniently) omitted when she is listed in Duet sections with her male counterparts. This happens more often that you think. I wonder why that is?

"inimaiyAnathu" is by KVM, I think. Ramki could confirm. Did anyone listen to "unnai nAn aRivEn" from Guna. I have not heard that song in full before. The folk part is by VJ. Did you all know this already or what? I didn't.

Neel the chorus part is not by VJ. The singer name is Usha and she has been singing in IRs troupe for a long time. She once sang the SJ part of 'kanmani anbodu' along with Kamal on a stage show.
Inimaiyaanathu is by KVM
Naaz yes panam penn paasam has vadivukarisi but in a minor role. Muthuraman and Saritha were the main actors. Vadivu played Sarithas mom in the film(Muthu is the father). I think vijayanand was paired against Saritha

It is a SPB/VJ duet, I think.

Naaz: There are 2 routes to transferring tapes to CDs. One is a PC - you need a cd-rw drive, the adaptec easy cd software, a tape deck with line out, and a Y-connector that takes the tape deck's line out and splits this into two streams simulating the left & right speakers (i.e., to transform mono recordings into pseudo-stereo recordings). If you choose this option, let me know - I think I still have easy cd 4 and can send this to you (I upgraded to easy cd 5 and the versions are not that different; so you won't lose much using older software). The software is easy to use and you can also use options like normalize and a graphic equalizer to (allegedly) maintain sound levels at identical levels even if you use different sources (e.g. a cd (if you have a second drive like a DVD drive etc) and a tape or two tapes where you have to increase the sound level on one to get the same sound as the other). The software has options to get rid of annoying clicks (in the case of LPs), pops, hisses etc. For the more technically inclined, there is a Wave editor where you can manually remove alter the audio wave form. This is a two step process, with the software first transferring from the tape to the hard drive and then from the hard drive to through the cd-rw drive to a cd. It's more complex, but you get a better recording.
The easier approach is also newer. Several mini-sound systems (tape/radio/cd) have been introduced with a cd-rw drive incorporated. This means you can pop a tape into the cassette player, press a couple buttons and record into a cd. The process breaks down a little bit when it comes to recognizing track separation. Excepting HMV recordings I have to manually press a button for the cd-rw drive to recognize that I've moved on to the next song. Models are available on Sharp, Sony (I believe) and Aiwa brands. I strongly recommend the Aiwa (XR-303RW I think is the model number of the one I have; although this one is more expensive $290 incl shipping). The Sharp was available for $400 at qvc.com during Christmastime.
Sites to check out - roxio.com (easy cd), epinions.com for product reviews, qvc.com (sharp) and of course mysimon.com/pricescan.com/yahoo.com for comparison shopping.
Like I said I'm very happy with the Aiwa - I've recorded about 20 CDs now (90% VJ non-film - inspired by this thread:-)and it's working fine.

couple additions: On the software - I use the word allegedly, because I haven't seen this option to be very effective. You can get the Y-connector at Radio Shack/CompUSA etc. There are other software packages as well - I like easy cd.
On the 2nd option - the Aiwa's remote is rather limited in terms of ability to record. You have to be right next to the main system so you can press the buttons (mostly).
