hi,
In junior vikatan they are publishing an interview of ARR. it started last week & i think it will go upto 10 or more issues. this week there is an interesting Qn. & more interesting answer. I'll try to translate it for U !
Q : When IR was in top of music indudtry., he did music for 4 or 5 films at a time., but he was able to show some variety in songs. none of his 2 songs released at same time will be similar. But u r doing only one film at a time., u take lot of time but the final result -- ??., almost of all ur works look similar ! Why this happens ??
A : This may be due to the fact that i use same set of instruments in all songs with different combinations !
WHAT A 'MAZUPPAL' ANSWER !
DFers., what do u think about this. I think the Qn. is quite valid. for e.g take GUNA & THALAPATHY which are released on the same day. see the variety IR is able to produce between the songs of these films. IMHO ARR is lagging in this & thats why he didn't tried to object the Qn.
UR OPINIONS PLEASE !

Hi ,
After a longtime, a magazine in TN has asked this
question, (should have been asked very long ago) and the answer is a big joke, IMO. Thanks Junior.
thanks,

hi,
yes nesan., even i would have given a more realistic answer to this Qn. if i face such a thing. I think Rahman has no answers to this Qn. or something.

Hi,
I dont see any mazupal etc., have you guys taken a press interview... the so called film critics ask some stupid question and publish a stupid answer, 50% of which is coined by themselves.
ARR caters to public --- public likes it - there it ends , bad interview - poor interview - all these talks are just to pass time.

Ravy
I wish someone from Kumudam etc interviews me.
I was working for Indian express for quite some time so i happen to read interview scripts by our great critics. Mostly the final output was different from the actual inteview.
Hey Ravy:you have a fan called Vimal, great.

Srikanth,
For that matter I think Ravy has so many fans like
vimal. The writer the has the right to edit.
About, ARR answer to that question is riduculas.
First of all, he admitted the fact that his songs sound similar. That is something we should appreciate. IR also uses the same instrument for
longtime and still give variety. That is what make IR distinct from others.
thanks,
Nesan

After listening to ARR's uyirE, the respect (whatever!) I had for this guy is gone and done! It is not the question of sounding similar in two simultaneous releases. For ARR every movie sounds the same. We have spoken a lot about his lack of ability to come out with different tunes, etc., in the last two years, here. In the past, on pushing the question of being/sounding similar, ARR said "thats my style". Now its a different answer. But I feel its "vendha punnula vEl".
I understand he has been in music since childhood. His father was a mallu musician albeit without huge successes. He has done music for various audio-visual ventures until he hit 'Roja' in a big way. Hence, if his competency is not to be questioned, where is the variety?
I listen to MVU, and here I find a stuff thats absolutely different! MVU is a 750 plus movie of a guy who says his great music is yet to hit the stands! Thats ample testimony to the wizardry of nAdhabrammam iLayarAjA. I stay put challenging "OK Raaja, now, what next? Let me see you churning a tune thats different from what you have given in the past" and he comes out with one "nandhavanakkuyilE" or "iLayanilavE" from PVK...
and so on and so forth...I believe his score for "oru kan oru pArvai" a docu-feature is great and sounds like a "kavidhai" (Vikatan's review).
For a question (isaiyai patri yenna ninaikkareenga?) thrown on Raaja, he said :
"isai verum magic'dhAn. kankatti vidhdhai mAdhiri. irukkum yEzhu swarangaLai vaiththu seyyavEndiya magic. sollappOnAl, idhil nAn seyvadharkku onrum illai. isaiyil yErkanavE yellOrum yellAvatraiyum seydhAgivittadhu."
(This is a video coverage in Singapore - RaajA's first in Singai - and he goes on explaining how MSV had changed tunes of his own to bring out new ones - he says he explained this to MSV and calls it "the magic". He explains how "vA vennilA" of mella thirandhadhu kadhavu was tuned from an old one - i have this video cassette with Raja performing on the stage and in fact creating a new tune at the request of the audience;)).
So, its the question of asuteness, the shrewdness, what we say, the perspicacity, (lets forget the word 'genius' for some time:))to come out with different tunes with the limited 7 swarams. Its not the question of "similarly sounding instruments":)))
Now, listening to ARRs music, I only pray his music should be different (if not to the parametric extents set out by Raaja) by at least a recognizable length. Behold, its not the case.
His stuff is over with a few ventures in the past!!
Can we expect these questions from juvi in future?
1)Can ARR score music that reflects the true essence of thamizh soil (mannin mANbu)? Will he ever be able to?
2)Why is he not able to score music for contemporary heroes?
3) Why Aravindaswamy alone? (is Aswamy ARR's AasthAna hero or ARR Aswamy's Aasthana MD?)
4) Why ARR does not work with all Directors? All kinds of storylines, all producers??
The answer is quite simple:
"I would
If I could
But I can't
So I wont"
Its a question of "kAttula mazhai"! juvi has raised the question just only to know ARR's answer this time. Not that juvi or the rest of the crowd does not know the answer.
And last but not the least: I too have a wish. I wish tharAsu interviews me ;)

My imaginary ARr interview...:
Can ARR score music that reflects the true essence of thamizh soil (mannin mANbu)? Will he ever be able to?
........what is tamiz soil ? explain.also I am not a Botany student - I am musician. (people like deva like more english soil)
2)Why is he not able to score music for contemporary heroes?
........... contemporary heroes endral enna?
Puriya willai,
3) Why Aravindaswamy alone? (is Aswamy ARR's AasthAna hero or ARR Aswamy's Aasthana MD?)
.........from when MDS started to select heros, if I could I would put my friend X as hero or try out myself once. I think it is the job of the Director and the producer.
4) Why ARR does not work with all Directors? All kinds of storylines, all producers??
.............Why should he work with all directors -- Jokingly : do you change your barber every time, you stick on to the same person to maitain your Style!...I think this is something like that...
Serious talk:
Using same instrumentation : how about a discussion with few Arr songs, I can prove what you say is wrong. He uses different instrument but the note formation or pattern are somewhat similar. Have you heard Scratch pads in a tamil
song before, Arr used it.
Have a heard a jazz bass before, have you heard a slap bass and a bubble bass before, lead guitar,
he has used various kinds of drum kits.
Hear it properly you will find something.
also Guys:One request Don't drag raja into it.
Where does Raja come in Arr's interview.

I think ARR meant to say " i use the same set of tunes, same formula (90 % of the songs starting with the first word repeated twice) " but said he uses the same instruments.
When is he going to stop composing songs starting
with a repeated word. Evry other song of his is like that..
"Mustafa , mustafa "
"Anbe Anbe"
"chinna chinna"
"Columbus columbus"
"thillaana thillaana"
"nenjinile nenjinle "
"Oorvasi oorvasi "
and tons of others.
Bore , Bore .. Forget about re-cycling the tunes, why shoud he re-cycle the words also.. Thamilil ethanai vaarthaigal ullana..
His songs(including lyrics ) sound so repetitive , his scratchpad technique not withstanding ;-)

Dear Srikanth
Scratch pad, lead guitar, warm pad, slap bass 1,2,... etc., ellAm instruments. If you want different kinds of instruments, you have so many lead keyboards. We are talking about tunes. Engineering the tune with different sounds, is not the issue here. Creativity is the issue.
The question here is very simple: "tunes are all the same" There is no variety!! Mere filling the tune with some new instruments or synthesizing the instruments does not lead us anywhere!!
Now, let me give the credit for using those different instruments, to ARRahman, the sound engineer. Period. The creativity belongs to some other person, per se. Period. You know who it is.
You forgot to mention the quality of sound produced by ARR. Yes, good! How else can he compensate the lack of ingenuity?
Now, I could also understand why he changes his singers or rather 'introduces' new guys. A repeated tune sung by an established singer will sound very very repetitive. Right? So, adapt a new style of 'introducing' a new artist or trying a new voice. amukkipOdu!!
<>Joke: As I keep moving around US, I dont have a any AasthAna barber:)
<>thamizh soil?? From "mEgam karukkayilE" (vaidhEhi kAththirundhAL) to "yArum viLaiyAdum" (nAdOdi thendral) to "chinna manikkAga" (sendhooram) to ............
there are so many songs that truly reflect the content, taste and sociality...of our thamizhnAdu.
<>Contemporary heroes. Forget it. I meant all guys - left, right and center. Ranging from Ramarajan kind to Kamalhasan.
<>(.........from when MDS started to select heros, if I could I would put my friend X as hero or try out myself once. I think it is the job of the Director and the producer)
Simple words: ARR is very selective. He needs all factors like Hero, Director, Producer, etc., to be conducive for his show! I tried some other words. Now it is very clear. Right?
So, when he scores @ 5 movies a year, we have a recycling machine working at its best. What if he scores 25 movies a year? One MD gave us 25 movies a year. Some, and many movies had unknown faces except his self! Music alone contributed for the success!!Hmmmm......
PS: Pls let me know the songs of ARR that feature those 'different' instruments. I shall try to listen to them. No pun intended. ARR is a good sound engineer.
<>"Hear it properly you will find something"<>
Yes. Something except variety;)

Prasad,
I wish i could interview ARR ...to ask about his Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V techniques.. and also ask about his
amazing speed of composition..( just a few months for a song ;-)))..
MSK
PS: For people who would ask me if i have composed a song , answer : NO .
