Hallo Kanchana, Sachu!
Unmaiyale unga kelvi challenging-dhan! Amma kitta unakku endha pillai pidikkumnu kekkara maadhiri! (Konnuttena?)
I'll give you a hint of my analysis of PS's voice. Let me give you 3 songs for each classification I've made on the basis of
1. Voice quality (Inimai)
2. Modulation (Matching with the heroines)
3. Expression - Pathos (Bhaavam - Sogam)
4. Expression - Happy (Bhaavam - Santhosham)
5. Talent (Thiramai)
1. Voice quality:
-----------------
1. Vasantha Kaalam Varumo in Marakka Mudiyuma
(lines: 'aasai arumbu malaraagi
nenjil aadum ninaivu karumbaagi' and the 'aahaha...' humming before)
--Here, she becomes just incomparable. And it's just that!
2. Roja Malare Rajakumari in Veera Thirumagan
(lines: 'vaaraai aruge mannavan neeye...)
3. Naalam Naalam Thiru Naalam in Kaadhalikka Neramillai.
(lines: 'manamagan endha oonjalil....')
2. Modulation:
---------------
1. Chittukkuruvi Mutham Koduthu (Saroja Devi)
--Manasa thottu sollunga indha paattu kekkumpodhu ungalukku, Saroja Devi nyabagam varuvaangala, PS-aa? For that matter, PS devotional songs paadinal ozhiya, vera endha paattu kettalum enakku andhandha heroines-dhan nyabagham varuvaangale thavira, PS-oda mugam illa.
Even if I've not seen the song on screen, somehow I can never think of PS's face when I hear her sing a movie song. (This line of thought I got from my 2nd sister. I've got 3 elder sisters!)
2. Neela Selai Kattikonda Samuthira Ponnu (Savithri)
3. Naalai Indha Velai Parththu (Vanisree)
--Savithri, Saroja Devi, Devika, Jayalalitha,
K R Vijaya, Vanisree, Vijayakumari... en piragu vandha Jayachitra, SreePriya, Prameela, Bharathi, Lakshmi ivanga ellarukkum kooda PS was the voice. So great was her ability to switch according to the heroines that music directors could not think of a different voice.
3. Expression:(Pathos)
------------------------
1. Sonnadhu Needhana
2. Kanna Karumai Nira Kanna
3. Ennai Marandhadhen
4. Expression: (Happy)
------------------------
1. Chittukkuruvikenna Kattuppaadu
2. Oru Raja Raniyidam (Duet from Sivandha Mann)
3. Kannan Oru kai Kuzhandhai
5. Talent:
---------------
1. Mannavan Vandhaanadi
2. Sathiyam Sivam Sundaram (Azhagan Muruganidam)
3. Kannukku Kulamedhu (Karnan)
--one might think 'Ennuyir Thozhi' from Karnan is tough to sing. But I would rate 'Kannukku Kulamedhu' as even tougher.
There are singers who could have sung all those songs mentioned (though not better) like S Janaki and Lata Mangeshkar and Vani jayaram. Enna difference-na while Janaki lacks clarity, Lata might lacks the ease, and Vani Jayaram lacks versatality.
I used to feel Lata sometimes shouts in her high pitched voice. Ofcourse, I have great reverence for her. But I love PS.
To sum it all up:
-------------------
Once my last sister asked me who was my favourite singer in Men as well as Women. I said PS and in men TMS - she likes TMS, too - then she asked me if I liked TMS the way she liked him meaning she liked TMS as much as PS. And then she continued to say that I rated PS as my first preferred voice, second and also the third. ("Mudhalla unakku suseela pidikkum...aduthathum suseela...adhukku aduthathum suseeladhanne?"). Though I was surprised how nicely she put it, she was right.
Karthi.

Hi!
It's me again....enakku vera velai illannu thonudhu illa...enna panna, week end!
There are two songs which I did not mention because they were highly film oriented and I did not want to join them in that list:
1. Aandavanin Thottathile
2. Sirippil Undaagum Raghathile
3. Moothaval Nee Koduthai
4. Oru Naal Iravu Pagal Pol Nilavu
5. Paghalile Chandiranai Parka Ponen
Thanks. Bye.

Karthi:
I 100% agree with your analysis of PS's voice and
singing abilities. Apart from talent, a lot of
hard work also has gone into her singing. Although
she lacks (even now) fluency in speaking Tamil,
that doesn't show even a tiny tiny tiny bit in her
singing! Regarding modulation, the chittukkuruvi
example is a very nice one. I should add that the
same movie (Pudhiya Paravai) has another song..
paarththa njaabagam illaiyO. When you hear it
you can immediately get that it is for Sowcar G.
Tremendous modulation change within the same movie!
I should also mention here her singing of children
songs.
Past or present, there is no singer who has come
anywhere near PS! Woudn't you agree?

It's so nice to recall Missiamma songs
from my memory.
Can someone say who was the MD of Missiamma?
S Rajeshwar Rao?

I don't understand the tadadata you are talking about!!

pazhagum thamizhe paarthiban maganE
any more admirers?

RV, thank you for recalling the Missiamma songs. I did enjoy the picturization of "vArAyO veNNilAvE" when I watched it last year--a touch of humor.
Sachu, I like "pazhagum thamizhE" from P.K. I seem to have forgotten the other song you mentioned. How about "inbam pongum veNNilA veesidhE" from veera pANdiya kattabomman?
All PS fans, are you familiar with a very ancient song called "thEsulAvuthE thEnmalar" from kaNavanE kaN kaNda dheivam sung with kaNtasAlA? PS does a terrific job given the amount of "gamakam" in this song.
