Is it necessary for a playback singer to have learnt classical music?

  It is very important to learn classical music. if not you will have hopeless singers like you do in tfm. rat voice, zombie voice, no control voice, etc etc etc. Learn from the good singers of bollywood or just pay them and they will sing for you. got it?

  northies always laugh at tfm singers for two reasons; 1 is ignorance and 2 is vayatherichal.
  You, for an example..

Sujata is a rat voice she shatters glass, Anuradha Shriram is so amateur has no voice control, Chitra zombie sings like a woman in her death bed - no life, Harini better become an elementary school teacher and sing for the kids, Shrinivas and Hariharan zombies have no life, Unni Krishna sings like a girl, Unni Menon suffers from chronic cold, x must be hearing impaired since birth.

  x.....we totallllly agree with you....sam...just go to hell.....we CAN put up with whatever OUR singers do here.....if you please....we HUMBLY REQUEST your so called 'singers' from the north not to disturb us with their 'therivu' paattu...if you dont understand that...(street singing).....and about rat voice and shrill singing.....that shreya goshal or whoever has the shrillest voice ive heard in 'gundumalli' and moreover she sings through her nose

  Shreya is da best. Even Ilyaraja realised that. Who are you? bwood singers do 'street singing' in tamil that is because thats what you like and it is selling like hot cake. Aks your tfm singers to learn some music. May be they can at least come to the level of 'street singing'.

  just wondering... do you speak tamizh? or any south indian language for that matter?. Voice modulation, pronounciation, gamakams, low and high scale etc etc.... Keep all these in mind when you listen to chitra and sujatha. ok? How many songs of chitra have you listened? She is a
  trainned classical singer with 3 national awards. Sujatha has the sweetest voice in tfm. Her voice is way too better than any north indian female singer. And don't talk about latha and asha. It's hight time for these patties stop singing.
  
  You must have taste and knowledge to appreciate music and critisize the singers. You don't seem to have either.
  
  Then shreya???? just wait for few months and she will become shreya who????? There are so many such singers already in the 'gone list'. IR used her bcos of this stupid trend not bcos she is a great singer. Mind you.. voice isn't just enough to sing tamizh songs.. pronounciation is more important... which the north indian singers lack completely...I don't know when you guys will ever understand that....

  Answer is yes and no. It depends on what kind of song he or she is offered to sing. SPB is an exception. He can do justice to any kind of song. But only KJY can do movies like sindhu bhairavi.

  sadhana sargham got a national award for a tamil song, too. Yet people call her all sorts of names. Do they no more than the people in the awards committee? :-) [hope u see the smiley here].
  
  [BTW, I am a fan of Chithra, VJ, KJY, SPB...but their Hindi songs, ummmmm......:-) Accent/ pronunciation is a major problem for them].

  I do know hindi. In fact many tamil people can speak hindi quite fluently. It's the northies who can't accept anything other than hindi and
  that's why they are ignorant about tamil music.

  Chitra's hindi pronouciation is much better than sadhana's tamil pronounciation. Sadhana's award is just an exception and it doesnt mean that she is a better singer than chitra. Chitra had an excellant career in all major south indian languages. Sadhana started just a few years ago

  Your statement isnt quite right. Its like saying A is better in Geometry than B is in Algebra :-)
  
  If you sing in a language, your pronunciation in that should be good. Chitra's Hindi is not quite upto the mark, she is not unbearable, but is quite bad nevertheless.

  Duh?
  While I agree that Sujatha is a GREAT singer, the second part of your statement is an instance of "passing personal opinion as fact". Sadhana and Kavitha as well as Shreya are extremely well trained (classically) and dedicated singers. Hindi film music these days sucks, but if you have listened to their singing in regional languages and private albums it is quite awesome.
  
  Regarding Lata's and Asha's voice getting worse and that they should stop singing - TRUE. I agree. But that is true for PS and SJ as well as KJY whose voice has become quite unbearable these days!

  Comparing sadhana and shreya with chitra is like comparing a 2 yr old with 20 yr old. First let
  them stay in the field and sing a variety of songs to prove themself. Shreya has probably sung about 50 songs, may be? Where is that compared chitra's achievement? I have listened to kavitha's and she is pretty good and I have no problem accepting that.. Simply passing comments like sujatha has rat voice and chitra has zombie voice is completely out of ignorance.
  
  I agree PS and SJ have lost their voice but they are not singing these days. KJY sings one or two and soon he will be out of TFM. He had his golden period. In fact I watched him at vani mahaal last month and he did a great job.

  Please dont misunderstand me. The guy called SAM is an idiot. By responding to him, you are proving yourself to be an even greater idiot. Sam is nobody to deny Chitra's singing skills, which are fantastic. Stop giving him "oxygen of attention".
  
  BTW sadhana is not a 2 year old when it comes to music. She was distinguished as a child prodigy and is an extremely well-trained singer.

  north indian singers are used occassionally, not because they are good but because of the novelty.
  
  north indian singers can never be as good as south indian singers ore replace them. period
  
  except for the older generation of north indian singers, the present crop is crap.
