This is the statement made by Karthick Raaja some years ago .What is the difference betwen a sound engineer and a composre ..?Can somebody justify this statement or prove it wrong ...?

I doubt if nybody knew the diference between sound engineer and music composer ...AFter explaining that then give ur conclusions ....

Sound Engineer is one who is capable doing the mix and match. One who can synthesise the original music with superior quality. Out put would be, very difficult to be distinguished by average listener. But trained ears would find out which is synthesised which is not. They can practically come out with any sound they want. It needs enoromous amount of patience. It needs some creativity. More importantly sound engineer should have good ears. Sound engineer must know what the people what. Usually sound engineers are used for gaming music these days. He needs to know the taste of audiences. It is a must. Then he has to go through painful process of giving a musical form to this thoughts. It is a very long process. It is certainly a science. Not an Art. But it certainly requires some skills, patience and understanding of people's taste. I guess ARR falls under this category as KR mentions.

But composing is like an art. It needs indepth understanding of music. It demands the understanding of nuances in music. Zubin Mehta is a composer. This is what Zubin Mehta had to say about IR.
I was bewildered after listening to his 'nothing but wind' and 'how to name it'. He belongs to the 21st century and perhaps beyond - Maestro Zubin Mehta, Music Director, Israel Philharmonic

Sound engineer= Accoustic engineer.. I believe an accoustic engineer has very little to do with movies. :-|

Sound engineer is little more than that. But Composing is totally a different level. Karthik Raja is dead right in his statement. For someone who has been fiddling with keyboard from the age of 10 or 11, mixing and matching must be a piece of cake.

Sound engineering is just not mix and match... It's really do with the balance of sound and music along with the song.... His work primarily is to adjust the ambience level of instruments and to mix it with the song... ARR has two good sound engineers sridhar and sivakumar...If ARR is not a good composer according to him, its his own opinion and IMO it's sad that an MD like KR doesnt know the what composing means...

As far thiru..

ARR himself is a sound engineer.. but we won't call him one because he has become an MD.. His ability in sound engineering really helped him a lot in bringing out quality recording of his songs. This is just my opinion.

His composing was limited.. He is primarily a conductor of classical music of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach... Thanks for bringing up the issue.

Person like IR who is fiddling with music for many years should know more about sound engineering than anyone else. IR is neither a good composer nor a good sound engineer, so at least he should have known the exit route, rather than wasting his valuable time for the last 10 years (since the king of sound engineer's arrival). Anyway, what a sound engineer can do to IR's crap music?

Guys,

Why do we have to debate on what is Sound Engineering and Music Composing. Its pretty obvious that sound engineering is one level below composition. I completely agree with AWE. KR's statement has a deeper meaning. A sound engineer only aids in presenting the composed song in a suitable format to the audiences with graphically equalized frequency levels mixed properly. Composition is at an elevated state.
Sound Engineering can be learnt....but Composition has to an in-born talent. And for heaven sake...dont ever compare the great IR with any one else....he is a class of his own. Me and my friend, have conceived this slogan kinda thing to tell to fellas who believe ARR is better than IR.

"Rehman's music is foot tapping. Raja's music is Soul Stirring".

Guys, check out Ivan songs...such a tremendous composition. especially the starting piece of the song, sung by Unni Krishnan n Mathangi - "Appadi Pakarthu vaynaam" ....amazing stuff...!
