Have any1 heard/remember the song "Aruvi MagaL alai Osai... en azhgu maGal vaLai Osai..." sung by KJY with Soolamangalam Jayalakshmi. This was from the film "Jeeva Naadi" acted by Ravichnadran and Lakshmi. Music by, V Dakshinaamoorthy, I guess.

It was a fantastic song with carnatic base and the ending humming is so soothing..

What was the sivakumar/ambika/mn nambiar movie that had several tyagaraja kritis/classical compositions sung by KJY? Music IR mid/late 80s. There's even a trio w/ KJY/SJ/BMK for these singers. I still remember Janakaraj twisting his face atrociously to express his appreciation.

One of these days (!), I will compile a list of KJY's raaga based melodies in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. I wouldn't even dare to start a list in Malayalam because there are (literally) several thousands of them:))

vgs: What I was trying to say was that even though bhArathiar composed all his songs based on raagaas, the movie versions of those songs were more "light classical". That is the reason why I did not include some of the other bhArathiar songs in this list.

Please feel free to add to the list. At the end, we will have a more complete list.

CORRECTION: "isaiyin mazhaiyilE undhan idhaiyam nanaiyavE...." in my list, is from the movie PUTHIYAVAN (music: V.S. Narasimhan). That song should also be classified as a raaga based malody:)

I think "Pramabhavanam Vendum" from His Highness Abdullah is the best film song i have heard from KJY. We will understand why SPB is a great fan of KJY? He has a divine voice.

"pramadhavanam veeNdum..." is indeed a gem. The combination of lyricist Kaithapram, composer Raveendran and KJY has created some of the greatest songs. Listen to "dhEva sabhaathalam...." (two versions of the raagamaalika) in His Highness Abdulla. The names of all the raagas are used as part of the lyrics (as we were discussing "oru naaL pOtdhumaa.." in the Unique Songs thread).

BTW, M.G. Srikumar won the national award that year for "naadha roopiNi..." from HHA. KJY won it the next year for BHARATHAM which had the same musical team. For the songs in BHARATHAM, please click below:

Exactly.. He is the most verstaile singer i have ever listened to. I truly feel our current MDs are not using his talents to full advantage. IR-KJY combination is the deadliest combo.

why just film songs - he is a carnatic vocalist full-time is he not. MUSICINDIAONLINE.COM has many of his pure carnatic performances. He is amazing.

I have that song Vedham Nee by KJY. It is an amazing performance by KJY. This is one of the 1000s of gems by IR. IR used KJY better than any other MD. Otherwise we would have lost this gifted singer to carnatic music.
